Victoria is to transition from High Risk to Extreme Risk on the 29 September 2021 with WA and join NSW who have been Extreme Risk for a while now.
Premier McGowan has indicated repeatedly that he will not be changing anything with NSW and now Victoria until at least next year. With that being the case, if either or both of Fremantle or the West Coast Eagles draft players from either of Victoria or NSW, how will they be allowed into WA while there are currently, at the very least, 100s of WA residents unable to return to their homes, families and jobs?
The Extreme Risk category has no allowance for exemptions under compassionate grounds or for relocation. Queensland have an exemption for people that are relocating to that state no matter which state they are coming from. I would find it extraordinary if a person was given an exemption to relocate to the state after being drafted when current local residents can't get back even for an end of life event. The very few that I have seen recently since the Extreme Risk rating was introduced for NSW were for severe mental health and severe financial reasons. The detail of the requirements to go into those submissions is mind blowing.
Because it's footy, they will be allowed in, but I'm going to be interested to see what happens, nonetheless. Still two months away so a lot of water to go under the bridge yet, but I wouldn't bet anything on either of Vic or NSW being reclassified as any sort of a lower risk between now and then.
