It hasn't happened at all since Brisbane joined the competition in 1987, with at least one of those 3 clubs playing finals in every season from that year onwards.

And if you are prepared to link Fitzroy with Brisbane, it is 1980 since a finals series did not include at least one of Hawthorn, South Melbourne / Sydney Swans or Fitzroy Lions / Brisbane Bears / Brisbane Lions.

Of course, many people will know that Richmond did make the finals in 1980 and went on to win its last premiership - could this be an omen?

I doubt it. Richmond won't be playing finals this year. They'll finish just in the Top 10.
