Society & Culture Bouncers - why so serious?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

When I Was 18 I would have been in the bouncer's are 'kents' camp. How ever now that I have grown up a bit I find that if you aren't a dick then you wont have a problem.

I can't remember the last time I had a problem with a bouncer, talk to them like a normal person and they tend to be fine.

Well said. People like bunsen are generalising everyone involved in a particular line of work. I guess they dont teach modesty or humility at your prestigious university.

I'm 18 and I'm in the 'bouncers are kents' camp. I've never been denied entry, but I just don't like bouncers. Thuggish morons.

Do that teach that at any education institution?

Massive generaliation from SA and bunsen.

How can you seriously say all bouncers are thuggish morons? I've met plenty that seem like decent blokes,

Lack of intelligence? Lol

I'd like to see the majority of people in society do the job a bouncer does, you ever tried to control a venue that holds 600 to a 1000 people with only 4 or 5 other security guards.

We also have to treat injuries, treat people affected by drugs and alcohol.

The security industry is big business, and if you think we get paid peanuts then that's your opinion, but I can guarantee you we probably get paid the same and or more then most people, and when you actually think about it, we get paid to talk to people, have girls hit on us, stand around listen to music, joke around with people and occasionally kick someone out.

But yeah, we are the idiots.

By removing them from the venue, taking them around the corner and leaving them with one of their friends to look after because the place can't risk being fined for having intoxicated patrons being carried out of the venue. Please don't sprout that crap. (few and far between the 'caring' bouncers)

Go check out CQ and have a look at how the bouncers act on a sat night.

So you formed an opinion off of incidents at one of the shittiest venues in Melbourne? Right.....

I've worked with many a security guards at several venues, and that type of practice has never ever been exhibited, and you are also severely misinformed if you think the venue and security guards aren't held accountable for such things, if said person was to complain to the police about the incident I can guarantee you large penalties would have been handed down, something I myself can vouch for.

I got moved from one venue because the police found some guy sitting on the gutter with his head in his knees waiting for his mate to come outside of the venue, mind you the guy had never even entered the venue, he came from somewhere else, police rock up, sees the guy, puts him in the back of the car, officers speak to the venue manager, fines the venue $600+ and I was removed from the place because I was the head bouncer working at the front door.

I can guarantee you that us bouncers are very much held accountable for our actions.

I once had to treat a guy because he passed out in the male toilets, piss all over the floor, crap everywhere, this guy was literally dead weight, pants below his ankles, literally shit himself, I had to put his pants back on, clean up the vomit all over his face, then go find his GF, call a cab and carry this guy out into the taxi.

Most bouncers are dumb. Most bouncers are shit bouncers. It's true that to be a bouncer you don't have to be smart, but I'd wager to be a good bouncer (there are a few out there) intelligence would be hugely important. And I don't mean academic intelligence, more social/emotional intelligence to diffuse situations without escalation.
But that's the catch - most guys who have that social intelligence are smart enough to do other jobs.

I also can't remember the last time I personally had an issue with a bouncer. Had the occasional "wrong shoes" excuse so just went elsewhere.

But just because they don't make my life tough doesn't mean that most aren't complete knobs to others. Maybe you got old and conveniently forgot what they are like.

Do I really need to explain what "generalise" means? Do you really not understand it?

I am 26 mate, wouldn't say I am old by any stretch. It's not as if I befriend them, but they are just doing their job. Just don't act the prick, like it seems that half the guys in here do.

I don't have a massive opinion of them, but they are a necessary evil since there are so many w***ers who like to start fights.

Yeah, I'd agree. The occupation itself however really needs intelligent people. Unfortunately it gets guys with huge, steroid induced muscles and southern cross tatoos on their forearm who think that makes them perfect for the role. Being able to string a sentence together is so much more important than the threat of force when it comes to drunk ****wits.

Agree with the part about being able to talk rather then intimidate, but you also need the big juice heads, people don't seem to realize that at a lot of venues the managers really only hire the minimum amount of guards, from memory it's 1 guard per 100 or 110 people, so in a venue for example such as CQ, where the capacity at any given time ranges from 1000 to 1500, the guards are severely outnumbered.

The majority of the times they will stick the guy out the front who is good with his words and stick the big muscly ones inside.

I actually know a female bouncer, she's not afraid of anything, but is the nicest woman I've ever come across. She's actually quite intelligent as well.

Just because a lot of people don't look intelligent, doesn't mean they are deadbeats.

Your night shouldn't even be spent thinking about bouncers.... you communicate with them for what, 30 seconds? If it is, then you've either got something to hide, are dressed like trash, or have had way too many beers, and get angry when they ask the question.

Remember, if you're ever feeling threatened or in danger, you can always go up and notify them and almost 100% of the time the time they'll take care of the situation. Who knows, you might even thank them for it one day, not bag the shit out of them for doing a job you'd probably last 5 minutes in.

They are night prissy flight attendants, greeting you with a huge pretend smile on their face. They're responsible for the well being of everybody inside and maintaining an acceptable environment for 800 strangers, who come together and get on the booze.

I've developed various acquaintance like relationships with bouncers across Melbourne, and whilst I'll probably never socialize with any of them outside of the bar/club, I still have respect for them and they know that I'm trustworthy, which is pretty big to be honest.

If you're a prick and make an arse of yourself, word can get around, believe me. A lot of bouncers know each other. They can also work at 3-4 different venues, so you might get that little dose of Karma again!

If you owned your own bar or club, I'd suspect that you'd have a lot different view.

Are you 'that guy' that thinks he's friends with the bouncers?

Ahhh no, what part of my post didn't you understand?

If you're a regular somewhere, you get to know people who work there, obviously.

Never said I was besties with any of them. Thanks for the in depth question though.

I have never had any problems with bouncers in Perth. Most just seem like normal blokes trying to do their job.

I don't know if I could stand it though. Imagine being sober and having to interact with all those tipsy/drunk clowns acting like twats. No thanks.

Drunk people always seem to think they are being a lot funnier than they are in reality.

Quoted for truth.

Read the conflicting statements in your own post. It doesn't make sense.

You communicate with them for what, 30 seconds and you don't even think about them? Or you get to know them, if you're a regular? They know you're trustworthy, and you probably won't, but possibly could, socialise with them outside of their workplace? let's remember that this is a pretty big deal, if we're being honest.

And this is obvious... thanks for clearing it all up for me.
