Last time I was in Melbourne they had those bollards up.

How'd he get in there?
It is the end of Bourke St that you can drive down just before the block off where cars cannot travel. I am also pretty sure that there are not bollards on the footpath in that area also. I am surprised that there weren't as a number of people always are in that area

Yes, halfway between Swanston and Russell.

What prompted that?
numerous examples, but from today's incident, allowing an armed offender to get within striking distance and not shooting him

thus being ineffectual in protecting themselves and the public

American cops - shoot first, ask questions later
Australian cops - let's talk it out, let a few people get injured, then clean up the mess, investigation suggests police should have been more proactive

regular police prove time and time again that they are incapable of dealing with armed offenders

Grand Final Day a couple years ago - kid fully dressed head to toe, wearing a motorcycle helmet armed with a baton of some description, stupid cop allows himself to get hit, tries to use OC spray on a windy day (and the kid was wearing a ******* helmet), cops falls over backwards. Just incompetent.

you won't see the video below in a training manual

Always a stink kicked up when they shoot someone, they might've thought they could defuse it.

Clearly going the cops with a knife.

Surprised they let him get that close before shooting him.
Cop deserves an award. Showed incredible restraint at risk of his own safety, ending up saving some blokes life who for all we know at this stage might be a pillar of the community having a mental breakdown.

Police instruction is always to wait and do nothing, and sometimes that works and they can make an arrest after a few hours. But when a perp is in control of a violent situation, the police do not know what to do. Um, should I reach for my baton? Maybe OC spray, let me look down and see where it is and how to unlock it. Gun, no, can't ever draw that let alone use it, I'd rather get stabbed or a member of the public get stabbed, we must convince this guy to surrender ... verbally.

yeah, say that to the people that James Gargasoulas killed and injured

Not when he is coming at you armed, regardless of what he has done before.

Putting yourself in harm's way is not brave, it is stupid, incompetent and negligent.

He may not survive anyway

A lot of supposition there. We don't know what assessment was made.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support them using their taxpayer-funded ammo where necessary.

Exactly what happened when they shot that kid at the Northcote skate park a few years ago. I supported the police then, too. But it doesn't go down well with some of the public. Especially readers of the socialist newspaper.

'How could this happen?'
