Bowdens Final seconds tactic

Simple as this . . .

I cant see any team doing this tactic extensively as it's too damaging to their scoreboard and can take 4 goals off the clock in 3 minutes (When Reimers identified what was going on it took him 7-8 seconds to enforce the behind including the goal umpires signal). If the team is switched on to run at him and can do that time after time that will be much quicker scoring than a team can score normally in those situations.

It is not beneficial for a team to do it for an extended period of time shown above so there is no need to change the rule.

For every sneako there's a counter sneako.
eg,as someone suggested earlier, wat if the "bum me offs" had have enforced a 50 metre penalty?

Basically, the whole last half of the last qtr could be about rorting the system.

Personally i would have prefered to lose than drop to their level but each to their desperate own i guess.

I wont be praising the approach.

This is one of the reasons I'm not a fan of Bowden.

He reduces the quality of football.

Imagine how he would be as a boxer in the ring - always grabbing on and wasting time.
Sure it's in the rules but listen to the spectators re-action.

The other point it raises now is why would teams try to caral(sp) the man kicking out from full back. Why not just run at him and pressure him most of the time, it's not like he is going to do too much damage from full back.

Geez a forum like this makes a dumfkuc sports writers' job easy.....

on that level,it's a winner:D

How;s this.

I just flicked on Fox 1 and caught the last 58 seconds of the last qtr.

Not pretty.

Interesting to note, after the lads sang the song,Bowden looks at the camera, waves and says,"Hi mum"

I take your point oxx, this kind of action does reduce the quality of football if the practice is continued. But he only wasted what 30 seconds tops? The kick to yourself and rush a behind is unlikely to happen extensively for the many reason outlined by various posters and thus I take the angle that this is a monumental beat-up. If I'm wrong and it happens regularly in the future then there's a problem.

As it stands we have an isolated incident of something that supposedly contravenes the 'spirit' of football (only if you are a disgruntled Bumber or sports scribe). It's just an extension of the time-wasting, tempo, 'basketball' crap.

I doubt whether Tezza and Joel sat down on Thursday after training and had a beer and a snag and discussed how to waste time if necessary in this fashion (then again:rolleyes:). This incident in isolation I don't necessarily condone but nor do I condemn. In the end I'm just glad we won a game of footy.

I must say it's quite apt that JB was the one to execute this ploy:D

Bigger picture, time wasting of this nature is a blight on the game.

It was 8 seconds. He rushed the first behind at 10 seconds remaining and kicked out to McMahon with 2 seconds left.

This is such a non-issue, it's ridiculous.

Adding back those 8 seconds, McMahon would have run a bit further and booted the ball to the wing, where the siren would have sounded. The hysteria is over nothing at all.

This maybe has been discussed already but have a squizz at this. Talk about an over reaction by Mike Sheahan.

didnt bowden do this in a game against the lions a few seasons ago, and nothing was said. so whats all the fuss now, only because mike sheahan says its wrong, so everyone has to conform, hes even got leigh matthews putting his two bobs worht in. smart play. i wish some carlton defenders had these footy smarts

This is a very quick reply to a thread and news story that has gone too far.

Bowden marked the ball with 18 seconds to go. Why are these 18 seconds at the end of the game any more valuable than 18 seconds during the game??

Llyod uses 30-40 sec every time he kicks. So if we are saying that the time Llyod wastes during the game is less important than Joel's 18 seconds, then lets just play 1 quarter of footy and not 4.

Good post. It's not even 18 seconds that were wasted because the clock ran down to 10 seconds before he rushed the first behind. Those 8 seconds were gonna be lost even if he'd kicked it up the ground to a contest. The final 2 seconds were also not wasted, as he made the kickout to McMahon who played on and began running. So we're talking about 8 seconds.

I love how everyone gets pissed over 18 seconds Bowden wasted
I believe that was half what Lloydy needed for a single set shot

it's gutless play,surely u all realise that ?

We don't all crucify Bowden for whatever he does. Most of us are happy we won the game. A majority of followers of different clubs are agreeing that it is smart play, let alone Richmond supporters.

Gutless play?

EVERY team runs the clock down.. Every team rushes behinds... So do you think they would have called Joel brave if he kicked it and Essendon took a mark and scored??

Our season is still alive, not gutless play at all. I trust you were being sarcastic.

You seriously would have preferred it if Bowden had kicked to a contest, turned it over and we'd lost the game?

That's not courage, it's stupidity.

The fact that it could have backfired and he'd have been the laughing stock of the league makes me think that the course of action he took was far more courageous than just throwing the ball on his boot and making it someone else's problem.
