Announced three new contracted players coming out of the U18s - Seb Amaroso, Josh Tovey and Nathan Philactides.

Starting with Seb Amaroso, the Gippy Power U18 captain from this year
Sebastian Amoroso

Seb Amoroso

Forward/Midfielder

171cm, 78kg

A pressure forward and defensive midfielder, Amoroso has shown versatility and a strong on-field work ethic in his time in Gippsland Power colours.

Was a small forward noted for his pressure in 2022, alongside the likes of Jacob Konstanty – who was drafted to Sydney last year.

The Power captain averaged 12.5 touches and 3.5 tackles last year and has lifted to almost 22 touches and more than four tackles in 2023, bringing that element of accountability to the midfield brigade where he has spent much of 2023. The big thing holding him back is his height – just 171cm.

I've also added Sahaf Ali to the pinned post as a likely re-signing, who was listed with BHH this year but didn't played a game I think. While he hasn't been officially announced, Ali, an 186cm ex-Eastern forward, has been featured in the BHH social media posts.

Nathan Philactides, the Oakleigh U18 co-captain, who was invited to the national combine and unlucky not to be drafted.

Nathan Philactides (Oakleigh Chargers)
Defender | 179cm | 10/01/2005

Along with Patton, Philactides is an AFL Academy member who gradually slid down the order this year. The run-and-gun defender has serious wheels and often plays in a high gear, looking to turn defence into attack with his speed. The Oakleigh Chargers prospect represented Vic Metro as a bottom-ager and turned out for Richmond’s VFL side this year, so is relatively well accomplished.

Ned Long now the enemy - signed with Collingwood’s VFL side

Delisted Hawthorn midfielder Ned Long also joined training on Wednesday after signing with the Magpies' VFL program for 2024. The 194cm midfielder isn't an official train-on player at this stage, but is set to train with the AFL squad across the pre-season after being cut in October following five games for the Hawks.

  • Kai Windsor to Casey to play with his brother Caleb (drafted to the Dees at Pick 7).
  • You would have thought we would have had first call on LaPlanche also who is also joining his Eastern teammate at Cranbourne.
  • Will Elliott, who was talked about as a MSD potential for us last year and was listed with Box Hill but didn't play, is off to do his best Brandon Ryan impression at the Bullants.

Some more confirmations in here. Bunch more departures and a couple more arrivals - Lane Ward (17yo?) & Toby Cossor.

Bit surprised Max Walton got delisted, showed promise I thought.

Lane Ward was playing for Gippsland earlier this year as a 16yo, ended up averaging 22 disp. Not sure how signing him works, given he would still be in his underage draft year.

Toby Cossor another addition - a 204cm 105kg ruckman. Nice.

Quite a big clean-out of that next level down beneath the established players. Bit more than usual?

Hopefully a few more signings still to come.

It feels a bit early - Ali, Sruk and agosta were certainly training with us before Xmas. And the time trial had a few other u18 kids - Goodman, peacock - not mentioned.

Some talent from the juniors coming through, Philactides was unlucky not to be AFL listed, good athletic profile, beast of an underage year, Tovey and Amaroso were very good players for their respective teams, but both Tovey and Amaroso were likely Srate League players imo, which they have become, Lane Ward is a quality small defender from Gippsland, could develop?, Jacob Grant had some good performances for Vic Country as a KPF and I have not seen Ethan Phillips play but he has been talked about as a potential draftee in recent MSDs as a KPD which could fill a need for us if he's good enough? I also wanted to mention Tanzimat as a goal kicking winger/forw who was big for a 2nd placed Eastern Ranges as an exciting burst player, but not sure whether he will make it or not?
