I like Brad..but I will say (and he was not alone).. he looked to handpasse a bit too often V Brisbane. Often in big games , it may only be one player who gets a moment. Considering his experience and status in the side , probably understadable but as time goes onId expect him to take those chances and back himself.

A bit hard to crit him though when Higgins did the same thing more often

He’ll learn from it. I hope the coaches point out that one moment where he had a clean shot, but handballed it off. And make it clear that he has licence to take that shot.

Being a young player, they sometimes want to do the team thing, and don’t want to get called out for being selfish. But sometimes they have to be selfish.

Absolutely. Thats part of being a gun forward. Knowing when to be selfish and when not to be. After part of his role is to advance the cause of a goal being scored, and to handpass at times is correct, but at times its his job to take the moment. SJ was about as good as it got but at times , went wrong. I have no issue with that. Its cost of having the rights stuff in the forwardline.

Wonder what impact playing alongside Tom Hawkins, who we've seen become more unselfish across the years and who really looks to bring his teammates into the game, has on his younger teammates as they're starting out

If our key forward is looking for ways to bring teammates into the game, then maybe some of the younger guys take note of that and want to be seen to also do the team thing

This is where senior teammates as well as say Enright & Scott need to talk to the younger guys, telling them to trust & back themselves when they get a shot on goal - and I think that the same message coming from senior teammates like Hawkins, Cameron etc, will have a positive reinforcement of the message because it's good to know that teammates back you in

Shows that the club value some metrics higher than the scoreboard. I wonder how Evans running stats would stand up


I like him .... I do think he needs to build and add to his game. He seems to have a very good hand pass vision. I wonder if he could do the same thing playing in the middle.

I don’t think he has the size (or presence perhaps) in these days of 185 plus mids.

If the club is valuing on field metrics higher than the scoreboard then the coaches need to be checked into a hospital for gross irrationalism.

Oh dear

How did the likes of Varcoe & Byrnes ever play 100 games as forwards when they failed to average the apparent magical 1 goal a game mark that some are now seemingly demanding of small forwards

Yep. Our forwardline is finally functioning well. It's not just because of the big three who are getting the marks and goals. It's also because of the work of guys like Close who get up the field, pressure and create space for them. It's a mistake to think that if only we brought in other forwards who can kick more goals the team would score more goals. That's not to say there isn't stuff he can work on - and I agree that it would be great to see him back himself a bit more when he has opportunities to score.

When we were a top 4 team and those players were getting regular senior games playing in the forward line, they did average a goal a game...

From 2009-2011, Varcoe and Byrnes both averaged a goal or more per game each year.

You were right that he's giving it off too much rather than taking shots but the count on that one now sits at 2 total.

The statement above ignores that scores are an output of a team system. If coaches want to base winning on individual talent then they can go coach Carlton or 2011 Melbourne.

So those individuals scored more in a dominant team than when the team was less dominant? We're going well this year but we're deservedly 5th. I think the metric is less meaningful when he's a fraction under the bar in a team that is a fraction under the 2009-11 side on current output

And were either of those players 20 gamers in their second year in the list?

Close is actually tracking very similar to Varcoe in his second season - so let's see what happens when Close gets more games under his belt
