Brad Ebert - Do We Still Like Him?

I personally would love for both Brad Ebert and Scott Lycett to return home to Port Adelaide.

I'd love for us to get current Kangaroo Levi Greenwood back home to Alberton as well. Same with Derrick Wanganeen who is currently on Hawthorn's rookie list.

Lycett's really been impressing in the WAFL in recent weeks, with Cox turning 30 this year he's going to be the ideal replacement for him to work with Naitanui in the future

Was pretty obvious against Adelaide on the weekend but they also ignored Masten a bit as well.

If we do let him go I get the feeling we might regret it, he'll take a bit longer to peak than the other guys. Guys like Montagna took a while to come on - he had horribly inconsistent kicking - then it all clicked.

You've got to look at the whole team picture. Right now, he is shaping to be something like Rowan Jones - not overly skilled but will run all day and present, strong overhead mark and prepared to block and cover the Judds and Shueys of the world.

He also provides depth. Look at the Hawks at the moment - not much depth below their top side, a slew of injuries and they're wobbling. Yes, we would too if we lost most of our defensive spine, but we're building a squad to challenge for the flag and you do that with not just the best 22 but the best 30. Otherwise, you need a lot to go right on the injury front - even Collingwood lacks depth below the first team and Carlton are on the knife edge.

Brad Ebert has the potential to be a forward flank rotating midfield mainstay. If others like Stevens and Swift aren't getting games there's a reason for that and it's nothing to do with Brad Ebert.

As has been mentioned, he'd be of limited trade value anyway.

Ebert has shown that he can be versatile and that he can find the ball. My question mark has always been on his composure and disposal skills. To be fair he is not as bad as last year but with all the experienced heads back in our team no one should be. I still have doubts about those issues but what are we honestly going to get for him? Port wont give their first rounder, likely to be a top eight pick, couldn't trade in another first rounder for the crap on their list, Don't have anyone we truly need so i can't see a deal getting done. If all we would get is a second rounder i'd much prefer to keep him and take our chances. If it won't help us secure Omeara or a position we could really use an upgrade in. Why play the revolving door of trading?. Only four reasons to trade in my opinion.

Trade out a player to rebuild weak roster.
Trade out draft pick and or players to secure player of extreme worth to a premiership run.
Trade out player A for player B due to too many of said player at club.
Trade out player because he wants to leave.

Unless it's a issue of two or four, keep him.

Yea, we did, I was hoping we'd take with our first rounder at #16, but we took Ben Jacobs. The clubs plan was to take him with the pick we had that come after the pick you guys grabbed him at. I think our pick was #35 or something.

Personally I've never really liked him but as other posters have said, you can't have 22 stars, some players have to be role players. I was never a big fan of Scooter but he has really turned a corner over the last year, so it's only a matter of time before Ebert and Masten do as well. Besides he's not that great a trade bait anyway

A playing list that is bereft of talent, depth and experience.
The fact the Ebert name means something to that club. Like the way 'Matera' means something to WC supporters.

He is ok, he just has the modern curse of the number 18.
Once you wear this number you tend to run up and down on the spot looking like you are wearing gumboots trying to run in water. Your kicking skills aren't great and you tend to be a midfielder that winds up playing as a half forward because they cant really justify you being in the midfield. Your position on the team will always be described as workman like followed by sayings like "you can't have 22 stars take the field each week". He just happens to be the first that we spent a decent pick on, so it looks worse.

I like him, there would be far more naturally talented players that don't do the team things as well as Ebert which is a must when playing a zone. So I'd say keep him, there is enough dead wood on our list to make the requisite changes and giving him another year or so isn't going to kill us.

Every now and again there's an article that states a player re-signed but that it's club policy to not disclose contract lengths.

For a while I thought that was to keep opposition clubs in the dark but I've learnt that they can just call up any player manager they need and ask.

If you are prepared to take anything and you want him gone or he wants to leave then yes, now will be the best time to trade.

However the question IS what can port give us. All the factors mentioned above put them in a situation where a rebuild is the only option. Draft picks are not something they will throw away, so hypothetically say a three way trade takes place, i don't see what they could offer another club that in return would compensate us. Maybe, however considering they are bereft of talent, depth and experience i doubt it.
Bringing Brad home won't fix their attendance figures, membership issues, financial debt, stadium problems...etc Plus if i went trolling on the Port board suggesting we have a position of power with Ebert, they would piss themselves laughing and i would be banished back to my bridge where i would justly deserve to be.

you are right. problem with our team is that we have too many of those honest players and in order to win a premiership we need a few bullshit artists ie. players who can take the half chances. problem is u cant just go and get them, not like there are many players like that around.

Sixteen other clubs, with sixteen different set of needs, with sixteen different viewpoints. I'm sure something could bubble up if they tried hard enough. But "you don't see it" so let's just dismiss that possibility shall we?

His value will be what Port decision makers determine his value to be. There are a hundred variables and pressures to factor into that decision process.

Realistically, when would this happen?

Priddis is in the prime of his career right now and has a ton of credits in the bank. Injury is the only way I see Koby breaking in.

It depends i rate priddis as basically an A grade mid, most don't but to me that's what i rate him as and im pretty sure the club feel similarly. So no i wouldn't expect Stevens to force priddis out directly for at-least another 3-4 years when priddis may begin to decline.
There are other options for him to play though, there are 3 on ball spots available all which require rotation. He can rotate the HFF aswell. I don't think wing is his best spot but he could rotate through there.
Rotations can Always be made to suit. Ebert i don't believe is good enough for any of these spots.
Can Stevens force priddis out in the next couple years? i think no.
Can he play in the same side as priddis? i think yes.
A Selwood, Scooter, Mginnity, Masten and ebert all played on the weekend. Stevens is more than capable of forcing one of these players out even this year imo.
Also if i had my way we would trade A selwood to GWS this year, Ebert to PA and Use one of scooter or masten preferably masten for a shot at omeara.
