Unfortunately for the Eagles all the bargaining power is with Port.
Carlton found out about it last year when Sam Jacobs wanted to go home to Adelaide. You can bargain all you like but at the end of the day you either let him go into the PSD or take what port want to offer.
I think a lot of it is perceived value. One year on, the Crows appear to have got a bargain but last year Jacobs was possibly 4th in line at Carlton so his perceived value was less and for that reason his trade price low.
Same thing has happened to Ebert by dropping him in the finals his perceived value has become less (ironically probably by Ebert himself) - I wonder if he'd be leaving if he wasn't dropped for the finals.
Same deal with Surjan - good player but the fact he played a handful of games has dropped his perceived value - he may still be as good a player as 2-3 years ago.
