Ebert does get plenty of games at WC, but he missed out on a couple of finals because he fell out of form at an unfortunate time.

Ebert still managed 22 of 25 games this year and at 21 has still has some room for improvement, Surjan at 26 has little room for improvement in his game and struggled to get a game in your team only playing 8 times and plays a position we have an abundance of players for for.
There's little incentive if that's the trade

Pick 28 in a weak draft for a 21yr old that played 22/25 games in a top 4 side who we spent a high teens pick on and pumped a fair few games into?

I've got an eye on a few players that will still be around for that pick, they will at least be as good as Ebert. Besides we don't need him as a midfielder and probably never will.
He's probably worth a little more, perhaps a late first rounder.

I reckon he is worth about a pick 20-25. I base this on what pick he would go at about now if you could have used the crystal ball back then.
If you guys were offered Surjan plus our second pick I think it is a good deal for you. Surjan would be a definite starter in you'r team if fit of which he wasn't this year.
Or maybe it would be Surjan plus we swap our second and third round selections.

Amount of x games played doesn't mean shit in a trade.
The only thing that matters is how good a player is.
And for a player that is quite slow, if Brad doesn't improve his kicking or keeps turning the ball over back to the opposition, then he'll find himself as a depth player for the rest of his AFL career.
A player like Brad is not what you want for a premiership team. And it seemed like the Eagles coaching staff agreed came finals time.
The only thing that matters is how good a player is.

Largely agree which is why I don't think we should be too devastated if he doesn't want to be traded to us. The only uncertainty is how much improvement he has as a 21 yo especially if he is given more gametime around the ball.
In any side, he is going to be a second-tier midfielder at absolute best.

No he will be playing for port Adelaide the afl side. The only original club outside the vfl to be entered in the afl, the others are franchise teams. Fyi, if it wasn't for collingwood, we would still be wearing our original guernsey, and magpie logo.

No he wouldn't, he wouldn't get a game ahead of Butler, Hurn, A.Selwood, Waters or Schofield and would stifle the development of Smith, Sheppard, B.Wilson or Brennan so Surjan would be surplus to requirements and a wasted list spot.

Happened 3 times last year Houli, Bruce and Anthony. It's true that more deals get done but that is because the club that is losing the player makes call that getting something is better than getting nothing.
Consequently the highest draft choice traded last year was about 26 (3 compo picks traded).
I'm looking at this from Port's perspective and that it represents an opportunity to get a good ready made young player to the club.
As a club we've never had draft picks this high before and considering we only get Pick 6 in the draft, 2nd pick in the PSD is vitally important to us.

Which is all well and good, but you can't offer up tripe and expect gold back. Surjan/Pettigrew won't get a game with us and as such have zero appeal.

Surjan would get a game at West Coast. It's a silly suggestion to make otherwise. Pettigrew on the other hand, wouldn't.
I still don't think we'll be trading for him in an (albeit theoretical) Ebert deal. It's more likely to be draft picks and a third party brought in to balance the ledger. Fremantle has a more pressing need at small defender.

You can write off Schofield, Glass and MacKenzie immediately given their inclination toward the medium or tall forwards. He'd push or replace Butler, Waters and Selwood Senior given match ups. You're doing his defensive ability a considerable disservice by proposing such a notion.
Still, the point stands that I don't think we'll be trading for him in any potential Ebert deal.

These guys can barely stay on the park, and to be honest Surjan would be a better shutdown defender than just about all of those smalls you named.

-Butler's just as important to the team for his kicking out of defence as he is for his stopping ability, he wouldn't replace him
-A.Selwood and Waters are senior players in the leadership group, he wouldn't replace them either

It's not a smart position to hold when you're discussing the premier small defender in the AFL (assuming 100% fitness) when it comes to restricting the influence of opponents.
Everyone of quality has a role in almost every side. Either way, let's keep this about Brad Ebert and potential trade options should he leave.
