Kelly isn't an upgrade on Brad Hill in the position Brad Hill plays. Kelly upgrades someone else in the stoppages and we have to find a replacement elite winger.

It's arguing that Patrick Cripps is an upgrade on Alex Rance.

If Kelly is out of contract and agrees to terms with Fremantle then Geelong get to try and squeeze as much value as they want before eventually making the trade anyway. Brad Hill doesn't get to go to the draft next season.

And it goes without saying, but what a player did last season doesn't help us win games the following year.
I'm hoping geelong push for draft picks rather than hill. We have Clark and Duncan already on the wing and don't have a real need for him

LOL @ any salty Geelong fans talking down Hill. Already has a b&f to his name, in the mix to make that two. Also has plenty of finals experience from his time at the Hawks. He's a jet and holds plenty of trade value.
He is a fine player but not a good fit for our list. We have Duncan and Clark on the wings with cockatoo as well if he gets past his injuries. We will be short on gun midfielders if Kelly leaves not a wingman who average 5 contested touches a game

Brad Hill turns 27 half way through next season and is now somehow a better player than a few years ago when he was traded for pick 23 coming INTO his prime?? Ha ha ok. AA he won't be. He's likely to change his mind again in 2 years when something else changes in his "personal life". You can build teams around him for sure.

I'd spew if Geelong is involved in that trade. Hopefully you can con some desperate Melb club to cough up a pick from 18-25 for him which gives you more to trade for Kelly.

Freo fans seem to be like those guys you see at the Casino that pull off a few big wins at the trade table and think that it happens like that forever. Then they get a wake move and realise it doesn't. Brad Hill top 10 pick. Thats funny.
Well the fact is he is a much better player than he was when he was traded.

The hole in the list with Kelly leaving, Selwood close to retirement, and Dangerfield unable to play a full season as a ballwinner since 2017, is going to be inside mids. Hill is a player that would substantially improve a side like Melbourne, while improving Geelong just a little bit.

Hill somewhere else in a 3 way trade would be decent

I'd be happy if WC traded their first for Hill.

He is a gun and exactly what WC need. Hill on one wing, Gaff on the other, would be a deadly combination.

All other BS aside - if Geelong can net Brad Hill as a direct swap for a departing, out of contract, Tim Kelly...then they are doing very well and that is a deal both clubs should be happy with.

If Kelly is leaving and there is 2 clubs in play, I would say scoring a top 3 mid from either club (ie. Fyfe, Walters, Hill, Yeo, Gaff, Shuey) is a great result.

Hill is a jet - far better player now than he was at Hawthorn and only 25? - great get.
Kelly, definitely worth more than Hill but Kelly is uncontracted, Brad Hill has two years left and a player like Hill is going to be 100 times more desirable for Geelong given the window they are in and the alternative they'd get from WC.

Straight swap with a swap of 2nds chucked in since it makes little difference to us (will be eaten up by Henry bid) and would be a nice sweetener.

There is no chance it would be Hill and our first and we'd fight tooth and nail not to downgrade our first given it runs the risk of being taken up by Henry.

Kelly, pick 36 -> Hill, pick 26
The cats can't really be considering hill as a straight swap. They will have a hugely imbalanced midfield. Cats have 4 genuine ballwinners, one is 36 and plays forward because he's lost his pace and durability, one is 32 and plays mostly wing because he's lost his pace and durability, one is 30 and plays 50% forward because he's lost his durability but retained his pace. The other is Kelly. Every other mid we have is an outside player.

The cats won't take a straight swap be cause they can't. Plus Hill was worth not even a first in his last trade 2 years ago. Why is he worth the same as a player widely tipped to be worth two firsts now? He's a good player but Geelong can't take him. He can be the enabler of a 3 way trade however

Hill is contracted, Kelly isn't.

A club can just sign Kelly for free when his contract expires.....The Cats don't hold much in the way of bargaining chips....They threw that opportunity away last year.

What was Kelly worth two years ago?

As the two neutral observers pointed out. Hill's value two years ago is to relevant, he's three times the player he was at Hawthorn. As I said, in a vacuum, he's not worth the same as Kelly, that's not how trades work though. Contract status makes a huge difference in player worth, you will have to trade Kelly or get nothing. We don't have to trade Hill for two years.

Yes you can trade him to WC but there is no way they are going to give you an offer better than ours given how last night turned out.

You'll know your list better than I do but I would think Hill is better outside than Kelly. To make up for that inside loss I assume you'd move Selwood back in there more often and give Constable more game time. It would be better than two draft picks you aren't going to contribute too much for another 3 years when Ablett is done, Selwood and Dangerfield are past it. A ready to go primed Hill seems a lot better than 2 unknown 18 year old kids (given your current window) but what do I know.

The idea he can walk for nothing is rooted I the idea he'd be willing to go to the draft. He's not going to sign an open contract saying he's happy to play at the suns/ saints/blues. I just don't think him going to the draft is a realistic outcome.

Selwood isn't going back to being our major contested ballwinner at 32 next year and constable, while promising hasn't built enough fitness to run out games after a year and a half on the list. If Kelly walks and the cats don't somehow replace his stoppage work then he's shutting the window on the way out

Highly rate him; he was traded for a first rounder a couple of years ago IIRC and he's only gotten better. Would love him at the Bulldogs and would hope that we chase him because Peter Gordon was on the radio lamenting our poor track record with Indigenous players and he'd be great to turn that aspect of our culture around.

No...He doesn't have to go to the draft.....He can sign with whomever he chooses once his contract expires as an unsigned free-agent, after the draft.

He has that option.

What kind of free agent is that? As far as I know there isn't any kind of free agency open to a contracted player whose club does not agree to him leaving.
