Lots of effort there , not great reading is it. Does he still live in Melbourne ? Not a big fan of that if it's still the case. I'm firmly in the 'WA made' school of thought on where our recruiting focus should be. Seeing as how we could have gone the trade down and increase our hand in next years draft while possibly picking up 3 WA kids ( Naugton , Allen and Starcevic look good ) this year instead of going hard at a draft top heavy with Vico lads it's probably a bit of a litmus test this year regarding our overall drafting strategy. The strong ' best available wherever they're from ' crowd don't want to admit it and stress it's all about talent but I believe there are tangible advantages in having a list of predominantly local lads
Such as salary cap savings , keeping close to friends and family and a small but possibly significant ' play for the jumper ' increase. Anyway it's one of those ones where I'm happy to be wr.......wr ...... mistaken as I really really really want to see Freo win a bloody flag one day soon. We will give those doggies and tigers supporters a lesson in classy jubilation

It's a job, the club would have made a decision that it can be done remotely. Probably helps in some ways to be in Melbourne, a lot of player agents, access to most other list managers for trading discussions, AFL hq etc. As for checking out local talent - it's a team effort, Lloyd won't be the one physically eyeballing every individual, but evaluating dossiers made by others.

We won't be ignoring locals because WA is too far away to check them out... And our first pick was Logue last year (a bold selection at the time methinks). But imho local for locals sake won't get us a flag - we made the right call in going Darcy over the local boy (English) for example, though with such a difference in draft picks it's probably not as simple as that and maybe more a matter of luck that Darcy was still available with our pick.

Their drafting history is pretty much the same. Some good drafts recently, a few good players scattered throughout and lots and lots and lots of spuds. You will find it is the same for pretty much every club.

We're actually quite good at utilising our later picks, it's the early picks we've struggled with. Players like Pitt, Apeness, and Morabito we can consider ourselves unlucky with given their injury history. Dare I say if either of those three stayed fit they'd be best 22 players.

Darcy over English is waaaay to early to call especially as English was about as AFL ready as me. I like the big shush don’t get me wrong and he was a very good pick up at the price , little bit concerned about his centre square work as opposed to his around the ground ruckwork which looks about as good as I’ve seen from a young ruckman. I think we may need a leaping type fwd/ruck that is a better centre square option as soon as we can find one ( Apness or Strdnica??? may help)

IMO Lloyd has improved out of sight and has particularly excelled in the last 2 year’s trading and last year’s drafting. Fingers crossed for this year’s drafting. If he nails it his last two year’s work will have set us up for an amazing next 5 years.
I an not sure 2015 drafting is any good. So Last one year.

I'd say it's more lucky that our late picks have worked out rather than utilising them well. If we could have nailed our early picks more often we'd be a premiership contender.

In isolation it doesn't look good but you need to put the actual draft number

#27 - Tucker - tick
#38 - Balic - x
#55 - Collins - x
#61 - Yarran - x

Rookie
#16 - Uber - x
#34 - Nyhuis - 1/2 tick

Considering that we our first pick was only #27, I have no issues with the picks. Maybe more due diligence about Balic's wrist but at the end of the day, he didn't leave because of the wrist. For every Neale, you are going to get 2 that do not make it at that range.

Easier to nail early picks, because there is a consensus that those players are the best. If you don’t nail them then it’s mostly down to bad luck.
Recruiters earn their money by nailing the late picks. That takes research and the ability to see something no other recruiter can.
In other words, pretty much the opposite of what you said.

Still doesn’t feel right to me
Using Richmond as a yardstick for success

Or was last year just a fluke.

Picking Darcy who was written off by many as only a 50% chance to get selected (The popular phantom drafters didn't have him in and Quigley who is normally the most astute said he that was a massive mistake) in the National draft gets a big tick for actual skill of talent scouting. That bit is not a fluke and that is why we have got "more than the pick value" on a number of picks in the 20s - 70s over the last few years.

However, where you pick people also should be based around where others would pick, because values of players differ from club to club. For example, whilst there was no interest in Darcy, I reckon there was interest in Cox between our 2nd and 3rd picks. We could have gone Cox first, Ryan second and Darcy last pick IMO and that would have been an equally if not more safe way to get the same set of players. So I am saying we were lucky Cox fell to us. But pyschologically to a certain degree you have to back yourself in to pull off a Darcy type selection; otherwise you will be second guessing what the other clubs are doing.

I was under the impression that Geelong were also keen on Darcy, hence the high pick.
