Yeah I employ people too - and I don't burden them with organisational structures and reporting lines that are meaningless - which is why I don't get the Football Operations role...which is what started me on the whole issue...

and you know what - no one has been able to explain what the purpose of such a role is to me anyway..apart from vague mumbles about 'reporting lines'...

:think:just like CEO means - head of marketing ..another rubbish title in AFL land - CEO in my world means CEO - all department heads report directly to CEO apart from Finance ...
10 years ago clubs didn't have a Head of Footy.
20 years ago there was no such thing as a List Manager.
30 years ago clubs didn't have CEOs.

If you go back beyond 30 years at our club, Ian Collins was our Head of Footy, List Manager, CEO, plus you could add recruiter, footy admin manager & just about any other admin type role to his list of duties.

The AFL (VFL) was basically made up of Allen Aylett, Jack Hamilton & a handful of office staff.

The competition has evolved, clubs have evolved & with this evolution has come an escalation in the number roles which would match a department of the public service & this may come as cold comfort, but it is generally the clubs who have led the way in off field evolution that have enjoyed onfield success. Sadly, due to being in a poor financial position & not being forward thinking enough, our club has played catch up in the evolution of our off field footy expenditure/structure.

Why does any club need a Head of Footy, one may ask. Richmond certainly would be grateful they had one, particularly one with the track record of Balme. Unfortunately (perhaps fortunately) there is only one Neil Balme, so we had to find another one. It could be asked "why don't we do something different to the rest & not have such a role?" This could be a fair question, but as has been pointed out elsewhere, the bloating of Footy Departments has led to the creation of positions which only those within an AFL club would understand the reasoning behind. I can also imagine the AFL wanting all 18 clubs to be structured in a similar way to promote equality across the competition.

Thought I heard R.Lyon saying something about Lloyd not being frog marched out of Freo but a quick handover would be the on the cards with his decision to depart. That certainly turned out perfectly (and gets Macca a head start on his holidays from 31-Oct contract).

Seems to me there will be some overlap in a few positions by necessity.

Barker, Bruce, Teague, Amos, Clarke, Rocca, Fraser, Watson, Stanton, Davenport - report to Bolton. Bolton reports to McKay/Lloyd.

Fraser also reports to Villani and Millar. Watson, Stanton and Davenport also report to Millar.

Millar will report partly to Bolton, and partly to McKay/Lloyd.

Agresta reports to SOS. Brodie reports to SOS. Harris, Jordan and Bleach report to Brodie. SOS reports to McKay/Lloyd.

Shane O'Sullivan reports to McKay/Lloyd. Augustin and Matti report to O'Sullivan.

Cortazzo, Manson, Tavrou, Noble, Ryan, Coutts report partly to Bolton but mostly McKay/Lloyd.

Livingston, Bode, Tiricola and Jenner report to Hocking, who reports to Barker. Barker reports to Bolton and McKay/Lloyd.

Christie, James, Hogan, Clarke, Jaques-Anderson, Beard report to Pacecca. Pacecca reports to McKay/Lloyd.

Klarica reports to McKay/Lloyd.

Kempton reports to McKay/Lloyd.

Lillian O'Sullivan reports to Bloom and Vorich and also to Silvagni and/or McKay/Lloyd.

Bloom and Vorich report to McKay/Lloyd.
What’s a football analyst?
Are they the dudes that sit there playing SuperCoach and AFL on XBox?
How do I become one of them?

Jab makes some strong points and I have to say I tend to agree that the current mix of people in the most senior positions doesn't fill me with confidence.

i'm concerned with the lack of experience and that all appear vulnerable from day one.

Yes, we certainly need some real experience in the selection meetings and coaching departments. I hope in next few months we get that. But, they are hard to come by. Paul Roos is not available after Neil Craig retired. I would not be against getting in Ratten now to help assist Bolts. Worked with him before, spent plenty of time in a football department that been going well for years. Until Saints grab him, I would start to enquire if I was Liddle.

So my experience in reading the stats in the Truth, Sunday Observer and Sunday Press aren’t relevant?
Damn
the sunday press.........walk past a window and give yourself a nod..........I never read it without a hangover...........

I'm not sure the stats you would have found in The Truth had any relevance to football.
2 players who continually appeared - hart & balme.........
