I think Chad wouldnt go well moving interstate and also not playing with his brother.

Spot on. As I said in one of my posts Chad and Kane are Port boys for life. They will not be traded and I am certain they don't want to go anywhere.

Trust me Kristof, sunday morning in the office, I have plenty better to do. Just couldn't be **** doing it!

It's a little hard to predict what we can do, until we know what sort of currency we will have in terms of draft picks.

More than likely we will have a high pick and no priority.

Under those terms, I would pursue Ottens. If he wants to come home, we play, if he wants a money move we leave well alone. Don't need no Ben Holland scenario.
what would I pay? I would try to convert Stenglein into a solid pick (high 2nd round) back to west coast say (or maybe help broker Josh Carr back to freo if that goes down), package this with Reilly and our 3rd round and see what they say. perhaps Reilly + 21 (thereabouts maybe?) + 3rd round (40 ish).
As I have said before we have to offer Richmond something that actually makes them better, not dross that we don't want.
Perhaps substitute 3rd round for Perrie if they want him. someone will.
If we don't think Ottens is ready to return to his best, we shouldn't trade for him. If we think he will, we should be prepared to pay.

This makes Biglands expendable, though that will depend a little on the new coach. He should return a fair price from a Carlton, would they swap Biglands for Bret Thornton? or a package sweetened a little.

Buy a damned good medico to look at our soft tissue injuries, bloody goodwin been out for far too long this season and last.

So far this delivers us a ruckman, and a decent defender. We haven't lost too much pace in midfield, and we have culled some frustrating potential.

Our next moves might depend on Carey & Stevo if they have another year, we might not need to take emergency forward action.

I think our mantra then should be a real ball magnet centreman, pref will some pace. start looking at those teams with a little much cap squeeze, and maybe make some phone calls to anyone who might want a bigger paypacket. I have said before overpay for a difference making midfielder, hopefully use the PS draft to leverage something. If Ottens takes up our salary cap, I would look to moving one our overpaid veterans for some cap space. Say Goodwin to a contender for a 2nd round pick, which is a big discount, but clears his salary off the cap. Maybe the swannies
will want another paul williams type bargain.

I would target a gun young on baller with our draft pick, and not limit myself to SA based players.

Listen to offers for Mcleod, I think Brisbane would be very interested. He wanted to go there after the 97 GF, and it's close to the NT. he'd prob be amenable, and Brisbane have plenty we might want. Maybe Notting, Hadley + mid 1st round pick.
Mcleod is better off with a team looking to win now, given our lowly position is he best utilised with us?

I would also look to see what deals are being done to see if we can get involved, and maybe skim a little value off the top. maybe this is where burton's value might be highest. as make weight trade fodder. I think we become the club that will listen to any offer.

I don't think we would have lost too much, and we will have return a nice smattering of young players. certainly we give up some names, but they are either not playing, or playing well or form part of the future.
what we have returned is not so radical, or improbable but might spread nicely around the team.

Thornton is deemed as untouchable in any trade by the MC and supporters alike. At 21 years old and doing a great job for 2 years at FB he is a Carlton favourite.He has played every one of his 40 odd games at FB and never gets trashed.Just ask Lloyd .
Amazingly every club had a chance of picking Thornton as he came through the rookie draft.
Were also fortunate at having another 21 year old as a KP in Karl Norman who usually plays CHB and has the smarts and balance to be a 200 game player.
You can have Barnaby French or Ricky Mott :D
 
Can we afford to lose Stenglein??????

He is one of those players that act like glue and hold the footy team together. Its no coincidence that we have a losing record with Stinger out of the side. He is on eof the best taggers in the game who can get a lot of touches himself and is a very good overhead mark.

The reason I ask this is because there is a bit of talk on WC board how Eagles have apparently declared that they will be going for some experience come the end of the year and are prepared to trade their 1st round draft pick.

If that Pick was in top 10 could we afford to trade Stenglein along with Perrie for that pick and would WC accept that trade??????

I reckon AFC would be reluctant to trade Stinger as they rate him highly and consider him to be future captain of the side. I get the feeling AFC would be asking more than other clubs would be willing to give up. I might be wrong but I reckon Stinger is out of contract at the end of the year and might want to go back home to WA.

i'd b disappointed if we lost Stinger...however as u say Stiffy, if he does want to go home (and lets face it, his family is there, he goes back tehre during the weeks off that they get) then we should get something pretty good in return...and yeah the club would be asking a fair bit for him i think!

(hmmm the byes coming up soon come to think of it, wonder if WC and Freo get in contact with him) :mad:

good work Crow-my. That is the most sensible speculation about the trading period that I have read on these boards. The only thing I would add is that Brisbane will be offloading some highly paid players this year so are extremely unlikely to be in a position to pick up McLeod. Substitute Brisbane with some other club though and the principle still holds
 
People, if you think AFC would ever trade McLeod and/or Goodwin (for 2nd round pick) you have rocks in your head

McLeod will NEVER be traded and if AFC decide to trade Goodwin (Which is also highly unlikely) it will be for more than a 2nd round pick.
 
Why would any club trade a top 10 required player for a bits-and-pieces deal of delayed development youngsters like Reilly, high-priced near-retirees and/or middle-to-late draft picks?

Actually what you say about Stingers family is not entirely true.. he does have family here in Adelaide!! his cousins live here and he is pretty close to them, he quite often goes on a trip at the end of year with his older cousin who is also an AFL footballer! So i doubt whether Stinger wanting to go home for family reasons and he is the type of guy we cant afford to lose either!

Sad but true.

The value on the vast majority of our players has plummeted. Rewind to 2002 and we had the ammo to trade for almost anything.

Stiffy,

he is too slow to make the transition into ball winner that Josh Carr has made. Plus last year he was so crap, that Shirley was no.1 tagger.

I don't think we are really any worse off without stinger. he is a solid AFL player no question, but hardly irreplaceable.

you're missing the point
1. At Mcleod's salary they absolutely WILL trade him if they feel it will help the team. If.
2. the point with Goodwin is again his salary, if we need to clear space he might be a prime candidate to offload and clear him off the cap. Given his injuries and his contract, he would not fetch anymore than a 2nd rnd pick right now. But the point is, losing his contract NBA style, to target an out of contract player.

no of course they wouldn't, but it all depends on if your analysis of what is being offered is correct. I don't believe it is, far from it.

I don't think we need to dump salaries NBA style. With Smart, Clarke, Burns and Carey set to hang up the boots that frees up a fair bit more than $500K. No player out there is worth more that $550K a year. I mean NO ONE. Unless you want to get into salary cap breaches.

Just a pedantic point here. Where in the NT is McLeod from?

Darwin is closer to Adelaide than Brisbane.

well yes and no.
my point with Goodwin was if we needed to dump salary.

Regarding Mcleod, well we have already seen examples in the AFL with clubs shedding players because they no longer warrant their contracts. Woewoedin was on 600k when he was shipped to Collingwood. Remember how Mercuri hurt the bombers.
My point here is, IF we believe we are not going to get fair value back from Mcleod, we listen to what's out there. Few players in the AFL are as aware of their market value as Andrew Mcleod, he hals always made sure 'he got his'. which I am ok with, but the flipside needs to be faced also - are we getting ours?

Also I think Brisbane is a mature list, with their time coming to a close, Mcleod might be someone who can extend that. I think if they felt the same way, they might pay fairly handsomely for that.
