I don't really like Geelong but boy am I looking forward to you guys showing Richmond fans that the dark times are still ahead for a long long time in rd1.

Personally, I really rate Ottens. I question whether he will fit into your structure coz in my experience I find it usually takes 2 years for a player 2 settle in to a new club and then BOOOM.
For example, compare Hamil's, Gehrig's and Voss' first 2 years to their third year.

His talent is unquestionable though.

PS. Just get him to give Trent Knobel a nice send off from us and I'll buy a Geelong membership too

Top post! :) Man, I wish there were more people like you who love their team but can appreciate aspects of other teams. Big thumbs up!

werent we all like this too when clarke, spriggs, spinks, etc left.

Actually, if you read Cats Claw you would know that they were widely regarded with disdain and contempt.

Which will do better this year, Brent Maloney (ANOTHER midfielder) and some draft pick that wont get a game or Ottens?

The answer to that question is really all I need to confirm that we did the right thing. Seriously I would have traded Maloney and a not too useful draft pick for anything over 6ft that can catch and kick*

How do we all think Mr. Ottens went in the soup of Canberra?

Not great but I'm not taking a lot out of it. Put any 200cm bloke at full forward in conditions like that and they are going to struggle (think Paul Salmon or Peter Everitt).

When thrown into the ruck he showed he is a very good tap ruckman. He will King very abley in this regard and probably lengthen the Skipper's career.

The biggest difference I see him making will be to provide a big target at full forward for our gun smalls to feed off. We've had Kingsley there for the past few years and while he's done OK as a leading target, he doesn't provide crumbs like Ottens will. Even if Ottens only kicks 30-40 goals I see Ablett, Chapman and Steve Johnson share 100-110 between them (last year the had 94).

Bottom line, let's wait and see before we judge. Don't expect 100 goals from him or even 50-60, but I do think we'll be happy with what we got.

Soon as I saw the rain I knew he wouldn't have much impact. In fact, none of the big men had any impact. Thompson was OK, but Sav, Petrie for them, Henry, Kent for us did nothing and considering the conditions that is no surprise.

Brad lead well but the heavy ball and our poor delivery with it meant he wasn't going to be pulling in any big marks, but he provided a contest for our crumbers, only catch was our crumbers went MIA, except for Gazz at times.

Soon as he went into the ruck we got going and he was getting some nice taps to our midfielders and was throwing himself around on the ground getting the ball out. You couldn't fault his effort.

We can't expect him to fire instantly, I'd give it until about 6 weeks into the H&A rounds before we can gauge his true impact.

Remember, it is highly unlikely we will be playing in such conditions again this year.

Average like all our forwards. Problem was getting the ball to them. He was ok in the ruck but it was not a great day for any sort of footy so it is hard to draw much out of Sunday

Ottens was one of my favourite players until 2 years ago when he was put more into the ruck. He is awesome at getting his hand to the ball, but only tapped it to his team mates about 25% of the time. Very odd. His stats look good but his effect was woeful.

I suspect he will do better at Geelong with more canny midfielders around him and a better structure. As a forward, with you having more accurate midfielders than us, he should do okay so long as he is not made the sole tall target.

...and as for the 2 or 3 tigers supporters who are bagging him and hoping his back goes again, ignore them. Most of us certainly want to whoop you guys in round 1, but are not quite that 1 eyed feral. A club can't be judged on the lowest 10% of supporters, or Collingwood, Port and Essendon would be banned from the league :)

You're a star GOPR.

I don't think anyone is expecting the world from Brad, we just want a target in the forward line (he has better hands than Ben Graham) and someone who can give Steven King a chop out (his centre square technique is excellent).

About 40 goals this season from Brad would do me. Him giving Kingy a vital rest each game was why I think we were so keen on him - we now have two quality ruckman who are also very handy around the goals.

Combine that with around the 50 KK usually gets and then 30-40 goal contributions from Chapman, Gazz, S.Johnson as well as blokes like Haynes, Playfair and the midfielders getting forward and we are capable of scoring fairly solidly.

Brad Ottens - he's okay I guess, although I cannot see him being as good as he was in his early years at Richmond. Hopefully he will be a great assett for us :D
