Brad Sewell

Terrible treatment of a two-time premiership player if true, the guy gives his all for the jumper every game.

If they are dishing him off, I hope a fellow top 4 side picks him up.

Similar to Chapman/Pods at Geelong, its doesnt sit well with me that clubs are treating their club legends this way. Part of the business these days I guess.
That's right, sit on your list now days and you slide down the ladder or give yourself no chance of winning a premiership. The NBA and EPL models, although they don't have the cap we do, is the way clubs should approach it now.

If this decision was made earlier, would Savage have stayed?

The decision by the Hawks and Cats on Sewell and Chapman is perfectly understandable. Both clubs have young mids who they believe deserve game time.

I don't think Savage was going to stay either way. He's played 56 games, at that point if you're still in and out you need to look at your options. Plus posters on the Hawks board seem to indicate there's a more personal issue at play with the Savage situation (no idea what though).

If the Hawks are going to match the Buddy situation then that would be madness.

Sewell's been my favourite Hawk for years now. A great, underrated player. Wouldn't mind having him over at the Blues, but probably couldn't see him playing more than two more seasons. Hawks are still contenders and we aren't quite there, so why would he move from them to us?

Sounds like Sewell is happy to stay, but Hawks need to get games into Hallahan and Anderson. It would be sad to see him finish his days at Box Hill, but Osborne, Bateman and others have done that.

I think Sewell would benefit Melborne or GWS. A swap of 2nd rounders would be fair, IMHO.

It just seems like the Hawks are clearing the decks to allow Hallahan play. Hallahan is an inside midfielder that has all the same attributes as Sewell, but is only 21 and just won the JJ Liston Medal in the VFL. Apparently there are quite a few clubs circling him.

There is no questions that this was Sewelly's worst year for quite some time, and probably wouldn't be offered a contract at the end of next year. This allows him to get a bit more certainty with another club.

Obviously happy to keep. If he can force his way into the team, can only be a good thing. At worst he would be excellent depth. But it seems he will be spending some time at Box Hill next year.

If Sewell's open to it then would be good for both parties. Would be great for Melbourne or GWS. 2nd rounder fair
Big wrap for Sewell, but I think we'd prefer to take Cross for nothing as a DFA, than give up pick 20ish. We have stated that any trades would only involve a player that can give us at least 8 years service, so I'd rule out Sewell to Melbourne.

Would love Sewell at Melbourne but our second round pick is early 20's so no chance of that.

The thing is, a club like Melbourne is the only one that seems to make much sense (and I'd only take one of Sewell/Cross personally), but I reckon for a player like Sewell, if he was to be convinced to head there, he'd want to do it to try to get them into the finals before he retires. And trading him for a valuable draft pick (anything before about #45) would probably jeopardise that. If Hawthorn is especially keen to move him on to a club like GWS or Melbourne, I think their offers would start with a fourth round pick (or even later).

It's not a salary dump - Hawthorn are doing fine in that regard, particularly after losing Franklin, Guerra, Bailey, etc. I think they beleive they can get something for him and that from a list management perspective, Hawthorn need to replenish a midfield full of aging stars and can afford to lose Sewell with Hallahan and Anderson waiting in the wings. This is particularly the case as Hawthorn have little trade currency and seem to be pursuing Longer, Adams, etc. If his market worth is reflected in this thread then Hawthorn will surely keep him as I would expect they genuinely believe they can get something for a player of his quality (despite his age). I would of thought the same thing.

Except he's also contracted.

Really strange one by the Hawks. He's a favorite son, doesn't want to leave, and would have minimal trade value. Why not just let him play out his contract and retire a Hawk? He still has some value in big games and could be very handy if injuries hit.

How can the salary cap situation be that bad with Buddy leaving?

Or are the Hawks clearing the decks to do the unthinkable - match Sydney's offer?

The reality is that Sewell, Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne are all nearing the end and at some point we need to start preparing for the future, and avoid losing all of them in the space of two years.

Sewell appears to be on the decline and his current trade value is as good as it'll ever be.

Salary dump after losing Franklin? How much are their other players getting paid?

First sentance -

Hawthorn is open to offers for premiership midfielder Brad Sewell, with the club exploring ways to create additional salary cap space and generate opportunities for its young onballers.

Salary will be playing a part it seems....perhaps they are planning to throw some cash at someone?

1. At least he is a 2 time premiership player
2. How did Essendon treat their entire list in recent times?

I find this to be a bit strange personally given he is still a quality player but I guess maybe they are following Geelong's example and trying to bring in younger players sooner rather than later?

1. Yes he is a two time premiership player, congrats to him.

2. Pffft lame... Nothing to do with my club and not comparing the two...just commenting on this particular case
