Symes is a handy player and is probably worth a 2nd round pick at the going rate. He would be a handy addition to our squad but we are not desperate for him so I would only offer a 3rd round pick. This is unlikely to get him but so be it...a bonus if we got him, no big deal if we dont.
Can't see the point in us getting a collection of 2nd round picks to just throw one of them away on a player that plays the easiest position on the ground and was not a regular at port. I would rather us play douglas and pfeiffer before symes.

....Meesen to Melbourne, pick 37 to Adelaide which is then on-traded to Port for Symes. Otherwise, no deal. That's my take anyway.

I don't mind Symes but I do have a couple of question marks on him

* He is unaccountable
* He lacks pace
* He at times has a pretty ordinary disposal

On a positive side, he knows how to find the footy. He knows where to run and how to get it so its a HUGE plus in his favour.

Really when you look at the above without pre-concieved idea, that reads pretty similarly to Chris Knight (though Knighta does have a bit of pace)

I would be reasonably happy if we could get him for pick 28. He is still young and is a hard worker which would suggest that he has the work ethic to improve those flaws in his game.

I think we could do a fair bit worse than Symes with pick 28.

Oh, and Drummond doesn't want him because it would create competition for his precious little boy Pfeiffer

That is what turns me off, we have enough of those already.

3rd round pick + Doughty or not at all.

Pick 37 for symes would be ok but it would be ****ed up if we only got 37 for meesen.

That's all that's on the table for Meesen, but there are those on this board who think that anyone unhappy with that is nothing but a whining whinger.

There is a lot to say for turning our Melbourne pick into Symes.

It would almost certainly mean that Torney would not be re-contracted as we would then have McLeod, Johncock, Massie, Pfeiffer, Hinge and Symes all vying for spots in defence around a core of Rutten, Bassett, Stevens and Bock.

The long term future of the defence would be pretty well covered and the emphasis and focus would be on mid-fielders with pace and crumbing forwards with our draft picks.

i think we'll offer port pick 28 for him.. alan stewart discovered brad while in charge of recruitment at port and to this day still has a love affair with him, i think 28 is fair.

If Symes comes across I wouldn't take it for granted that he'd be playing in defence. In fact, based on the names you mentioned above (we already have that covered), we should really add him to our midfield rotations. He is a big ball-winner which is just what we need.

I'd love to get away (just for once!) with giving up something less, but, as you said, pick 28 is a fair trade.

Serious question, what will Symes actually offer this football club?

I know he’s young and a good ball winner but really he’s not what we need. Pfeiffer plays a similar role and will be a superior player. But if we’re going after Symes and heaven forbid actually land him, then Pfeiffer must be getting the axe which would be a disgrace. Symes is a run-of-the-mill back flanker and Pfeiffer and even Hinge should be developed instead of throwing away a pick for someone we realistically don’t need.

You are so bias. I'm a Pfeiffer fan too but he is not better than Symes.

Exactly. Symes played in a grand final side this year (admittedly the worst grand final side ever :D) while Pfeiffer couldn't get a game for the 8th ranked side which had been decimated by injuries.
Face it. At this stage Symes >>> Pfeiffer
Pfeiffer has more talent but then again so did Angwin. Nuff said.

If that is all we can get then fine, as long it is accepted at 12:29 Friday when we have exhausted all options. I would be dead against us effectively swapping one fringe wingmen/ half back flanker (mattner) for another in symes. If the AFC have a strategy to get more top 30 drafts picks, they should keep them for the draft rather than trading them away on the first fringe player that came our way that doesn't address our shortcomings.

symes was drafted at #30 in 2003, has played about 20 games over that time and played 1 game in 2007 due to wilson's injury.
he wouldn't be worth anymore than 28 or any any less than 40.
he looks like he could actually work in the midfield as adelaide need somebody to get the ball out as clearances haven't really been adelaide's strong point in the last two years (they've been ok but not great).
perhaps somebody like thomson from port would help there?

certainly the arguments for trying ryan murphy are very good - perhaps adelaide (if they do get the two second rounders from bulldogs (22) & melbourne (21 - less likely)) could try 22 + 28 for murphy?

and you are his relative???

sounds pretty harsh to say u would rather him shipped interstate.

im undecided on symes. originally i wanted him, but now im leaning towards just utilising all our draft picks, and hoping that we get some youngsters who can cement a spot straight away.

PLAY SELLAR FFS!
You can't play a guy that is injured FFS.....how many times do you guys need to be told that the reason many of the young ones were not played was because they were injured or returning from injury and underdone.?? Meeson was a classic case....injured . then did not have the fitness etc for AFL. It showed when he was played.

I think he'd fit right in......;)
And thats part of the reluctance from my part. There is going to have to be a limit of player that you can have in your side that lack pace and have questionable disposal and accountability.

I think we might have filled up our quota on those types of players and we are in desperate need of some genuine pace and skill.

Amen to that.

Let's get Bradley!! Don't wanna sound like an idiot but he's a family friend and has told me how he's always wanted to play for the Crows. He's been brought up around the Crows and everyone in his family are avid Crows fans! Let's bring him back where he belongs!

But he will be.

At present he isn't, but have you seen the age difference? It's over 2 and a half years.

Very, very impressive footballer is Darren.

I'm not sure why so many people seem to be pigeon-holing Symes as a HBF. Most midfielders start either on a HBF or HFF before moving into the midfield. His ball-winning ability would certainly be an asset at the Crows and the club is in desperate need of introducing more young midfielders with the impending departures of Goodwin, Edwards, Doughty, Shirley etc in the next 2-3 years. As far as the next generation midfield we currently have Thompson, Reilly, Knights and Van Berlo, with perhaps Douglas, Vince, Porplyzia and McKay (though they are unproven as midfielders at AFL level at this stage). IMO the more high possession players rotating through the middle the better (look at West Coast and Geelongs' depth of rotations).

I would be happy for the Crows to trade for any of Symes, Schammer and/or Butler if they are available and the price is right.

I didnt know you knew him...

Explains why you used to defend him so much. :thumbsu:

Wont happen because Port are the worst club to trade with. You always push too hard and it always comes back too bite you. Just think Nick Stevens and White. You could of had pick 18 by memory for that terd, but you had to push for pick 17. You played hard ball on Scott Thompson until you realised he had agreed to join Adelaide and then made a last minute play for him. And Nick Stevens you didnt get a cracker for, because of stubborness and the fact no one likes you, just like we would have got nothing for Huddo and Meesen if we were also a disrespected club.

spot on. Pick 17 for White, if we offered that and Port refused it there are 2 stupid football clubs out there (+ richmond =3)

For ****s sake... enough of you for the week. Stop your blood clot crying.

I think it is amazing that Drummond parades around in his blouse thinking his knowledge is second to none when all he does is blow his load all over this nice clean forum over any Norwood player. He then bags a bloke like Symes who CARVES in the SANFL and had a decent AFL GRAND FINAL in a team which got viciously slaughtered by a record margin.

I can not believe Drummond continues to poke himself over guys like Meesen and Pfeiffer who never do anything when Symes has already done more than both combined.
