I felt for Symes yesterday as he was awful to put it bluntly. He seemed to have no composure and everything he touched blew up. But I would certainly pick him again for the next couple of weeks to give him every oppurtunity to succeed.

Will reserve my verdict for a while yet but there was some good signs enthusiasm, willingness to run & tackle but maybe yesterday he was trying a touch to hard, let him settle into the side & we could see more of a decisive player who's prepared to back his judgment.

I am really happy Symes is in my fantasy football team.

Didn't see the game yesterday apart from the last 10 or so minutes but from all comments so far he had another one of those standard games, would have been great if only ... .
With a bit of luck he will get rid of the ifs and become the good player he can be.

He'll improve. We've seen the good and bad over the past 5 matches. He does his best work in an under, would be good to see him in the middle if we're losing the contested possession count.

Was pretty terrible yesterday... Was pretty perplexed when he was in 3 minds, then went on and ran straight into Eagleton or someone who easily wrapped him up. His decision making and kicking aren't great. However, he does do some very good things. Hopefully he keeps on improving and the club can point out the weaknesses.

The only power player to give a yelp in last year's GF joke. ...

Want to read something scary? The match report on the AFL website lists Symes as Adelaide's 6th best player!
...
His willingness and hard work will always appeal more to non supporters than to supporters of his own team who look at the game as a whole.

Had 7 clangers from 16 disposals apparently with 6 free's against.
Do Frees Against count as clangers?

I like what I've seen of Symes. Ok in and under plus seems to be able to find space at times and carry the footy. Think he will fit into our line up well. Shame about his kicking penetration although I guess if he was a better kick then we wouldn't have been able to get him.

I like Symes. I think he will become a handy second tier player but second tier player is all he will be. He doesn't have any outstanding attributes that will elevate him to 1st tier status. He lacks pace and his skills are nothing special. He does have a ton of guts which makes me admire his game, however you can't ignore his weaknesses.

If he was a chance at 1st tier, there is no way Chocco would have let him go. If you can find any redeaming aspects about Chocco (which I struggle to do) one thing you have to give him credit for is being able to spot and hold GENUINE talent. I doubt the likes of Doughty, Massie, Shirley, McGregor and especially Jericho would have seen as much AFL footy if they were on the Port list.

Mind you it helps when you have a competent recruiting dept at your disposal.

One springs to mind straight away, him running into the forward 50 had all the time in the world, 3 options
  • handball off to the player supporting
  • kick the goal OR
  • lay off a pass with his beautiful foot skills.
In the end he was indecisive about all three and bald man Eagleton wrapped him up for an easy free. Im sure it will come though.

Yes, probably the most 'memorable' clanger of the game. The most memorable free (or non-free) had to be when Minson was brought down taking the ball out of the ruck, and no free given. Heading inside 50m from that potential free, to possibly go 14 points up could have killed off the dogs challenge. Not to be though. :(

To be honest I haven’t been overly impressed with Symes even through the pre-season, I tend to think that from what I have seem all he seems to offer is being a younger version M Doughty and question his value as a trade for pick 28.

I am hoping that it is just teething problems by entering a new team and having to play to a new game plan, personally I think the crows play a more contested style of game than Port and maybe it is just a case of being patient with him and allowing him time to adjust. I could see glimpses of his indecisiveness when in possession of the ball during the pre-season, but it seemed far more noticeable on Sunday. The deer in headlights moment 40 metres out from goal in the last quarter was just terrible though, he still has a long way to go in my opinion but obviously worth persisting with due to his age.

I thought he was alot like Doughty as well, only skinnier. Although I dont rate Doughty as badly as most on this board. I think he does some good work but gets undone by a few bad mistakes, which was the case on the weekend.

I dont doubt that he can develop into a useful member of the side provided that he can work on his ball usage under pressure, BUT what the concern will be for many now is that value that we paid for him especially as it is appears that Symes may only ever be a 2nd tier player.

Mattner/Pick 28/Symes will be an interesting thing to watch over in the coming few years and seeing which club comes out on top as far that goes.

That is pathetic! Not wanting to kick the guy whilst down but I though he was the 44th best player on the ground yeaterday

Have you even watched the game or was that meant to be a satirical comment? Symes made a couple of mistakes, yes, so what? At least he got the damn ball. What did Van Berlo do all game ,he was missing in action along with a lot of our supposed stars. The site had Symes rated right with that ranking. Rutten got carved up by Welsh, early, and the rest of his day was not that good. It is easy to play the blame game on a player or two,but how about taking the glasses off and actually paying some attention to what goes on in the games. Doughty is another on here who gets bad wraps but he busts his guts every game for no recognization. Some of you have to lay off the praise for VB et al and look at who is playing well. Macca, and Scott Thompson had servicable games far below their best. Reilly's injury was the reason we lost. No-one stepped up to cover for him.

His endeavour and attack on the ball were excellent. Made a few clangers especiallly early but got better as teh game wore on.

Tier one players do not come in a trade for Marty Mattner.

I dont agree with your comment as 2 of Symes' worst mistakes came in the last quarter and cost us a goal against and possibly a goal for us.

I agree that you wouldnt get a top tier player by trading mattner, but Marty was an extremely useful player IMO that was playing out of position last year. From what I have seen I would rather have mattner on the wing then Symes at half back, but only time will tell if my initial impression is correct.

Did you watch the Swans game? If you did, you would have seen the same old useless stuff from Mattner. We have gained a lot by trading him.

Again another case of people thinking a player is better than what he actually is.

I watched the game and cant think of any player on the field who was more costly and panicked under pressure more than Symes. The occassion got to him. I would persist with him as we have invested in him heavily but let me tell you champ another performance or two like that in a row and he can go and win another flag with the dogs.
I agree with you on Doughty the guy gets belted before he gets on the ground by our supporters. And as for laying of the praise for VB, no chance! He is going to be a 250 gamer for our club

Yep. Reminded me of Mattner of old.

or is it another case of some people thinking everyone who left "was never really any good anyway"?

When I saw that one I thought to myself, what would Marty have done in the same situation - in comparison to Symes.

I reckon Marty would have not thought, and tried to take on the tackler, got caught and been done for holding the ball. In Symes case, he thought about it to much, before freezing, and getting caught holding the ball.

One maybe doesnt think enough, the other maybe thinks too much.

Watched it and was still bloody surprised to see him playing in the backline, at stages deep. I still maintain that if he is thrown on to the wing he can be a very effective, attacking player.
