Brad's assessment discussion - Rebuild?

I think you are saying changing the coach Was necessary......

So how will you evaluate Shaw.....

Posters here were unhappy thinking we shld have done better with our squad
I thought we got wot we deserved personally

thats what i was wondering?

should it be;

But that doesn't mean the change of coach in itself, was absolutely incorrect and unnecessary.

therefor separating the discussions about the change of coach and the future?

Obviously.

Just because a future coach might fail has zero bearing on the decision to change in itself.

If you sell a car that breaks down all the time, and then buy one worse, does that mean getting rid of the initial failing car a poor decision?

No. It has no relevance.

I'm certain everyone is feeling the same way.

Who knows what lies ahead? The only thing we can, probably, all agree on is that there is a much better “vibe” around the place right now. Time eventually caught up with Brad at North. It turns out that it wasn’t a case of “North can’t afford to bottom out”. Instead, it was “Brad Scott can’t afford to bottom out”. The fact we’d never made it to a GF after 9 years under Brad meant that he was in trouble if the team started to disappoint. This season was the first time that North “under-delivered”.

So I take it you weren’t there at last yrs game v tiggers
Exciting game team played xclnt footy
Just after we had the Hawks 11 goals to 3 at half time
Creamed GWS

you are just rewriting history to say Scott cannot coach

He had issues
Don’t we all

Scott wouldn't have lasted the 2013 season in a ruthless organisation or in football. The fact he got another 6 years is a stain on our board that only a premiership will erase.

Bloke was a stubborn megalomaniac, horrible game day and even worse on selection night. Never been happier at seeing us grow some balls and march the clown.

Rebuild? List not good enough? Nonsense.

Top 5 in the comp players at their position:

Tarrant
Brown
Cunnington
Higgins
Jacobs (when fit)

We supposedly had two of 2018's top rated wingmen in Polec and Dumont, according to a stat they posted during the Freo match in round 1.

We have young forwards: Larkey, Zurhaar, Thomas. Wood is finding form.

We have a fairly solid defence, with Williams being AA squad at his best, and Jasper matching him this year.

Anderson is a tackling machine and currently rated top 30 in the comp.

Ziebell on 2018 form could be anything as a mid sized forward-mid hybrid.

Goldy is a very solid ruck option.

Simpkin is starting to really have an influence on matches.

We are nowhere near as bad as Brad, Duck, Wallace or any list management pundit would have you believe.

Friday night was just a taste of what we are capable of with the right game plan and attitude.

We don't need a rebuild. We need to keep an eye on deficiencies and work to improve them, but a rebuild is just nonsense. We are ready to contend as of the back half of this year and moving into next year.

You left out Goldstein.

So how did we so many games?..
I will answer that
It is because with the squad we had certain opposition teams found us difficult to match up on

But the simplest way to analyse it is v Top 8 teams under BS

overall, taking the rough with the smooth we usually got done

Plus indicators like Brownlow votes and AA, chuck Rising Star noms in as well
Just lacked a bit of talent a bit of luck
Garner BJ 20 games in 4 yrs

Worst Big mistake was Levi
That screwed the Team Balance

The very thing Brad was still clinging onto was the thing that cost him the most. Potential output.

He based the game plan around the absolute best the team could deliver whilst not considering whether there could be bumps along the road. And by bumps, I mean whether players can follow that system or if individual players can play well in that system regardless. The result was there wasn't cohesion and a second wall. It was play perfect football or get pumped. It didn't work.

He tried to implement something we never tried before. And he thought the new inclusions would provide that uplift.

But without a second thought if it goes wrong, it can go catastrophically wrong. And it did.

The rebuild discussion is definitely not black and white. There is no wrong answer but the best way to go about it is to play a team that can play really good football with little to zero passengers. Everyone playing well = success.

If the playing group drops in form and the suspects are known, drop them to the 2s for a spell and reward another youngster.

If no players are playing bad football, then well the youngsters have to seriously impress to push into the seniors.

Create hunger around the environment and success will follow. A new voice will do just that.

Something Brad probably regrets not doing was giving his youngsters the opportunity to 'coach themselves' like Pagan used to drill into our footballers seasons ago.

When youngsters know they are making mistakes because they are the reason, they hit the next play harder and make up for it. When it's because you're not comfortable in that position (but it's the only position you can play in the seniors to get a go), and get dropped because that position is foreign and your role is confusing, it becomes frustrating.

E.g. Luke McDonald needs to move back into the midfield rotation. He can't be playing in the backline forever and Shaw probably knows this.

Bloke was drafted to be a ball magnet and elite runner, not take a forward out of the game.

Converting a gun midfielder into a serviceable defender, why Brad?

Development should be solely focussed on improving the player in their natural position. If there are too many performing players playing there, bad luck! Don't change his position otherwise it disrupts development of other players that were drafted for that position and it creates a chain reaction. Also, it would be nice if we don't draft substantial amount of players for specific positions we don't need to but disregard positions needing depth.

'...AFL football will just pick you up, chew you up and spits you out...' Denis Pagan.

Make the hard calls when appropriate. If the bloke can't play well in their draft position and hasn't improved, see ya later.

It is what we have done since Laidley, develop half forward and half back flankers. You only need two of each. But we have a team full of them.
