Chris Pelchen, general manager for personnel and strategy, is quoted on the AFL website as saying "we'll be just taking the best available talent" in the 2005 draft.

Phew, isn't that a relief ! I was thinking they might go and get the worst blokes in the draft.

Could this be a contender for "nothing statement of the year" ?

I think the problem is the media are trying to feed a footy starved public and will use anything at the moment. I also think club officials are asked to make too many statements and Chris Pelchen was probably responding to a particular question.

He may have been asked, "Are Hawthorn looking for any particular type of player the draft?", to which may have come the response, "we'll just be taking the best available talent". You need to take it in context.

Couldn't agree with you more AH. Footy is made up of nothing more than "tow the line", "tell them nothing" statements, I thought this one was especially funny ! :D

This is highlighted by Nathan Burke, on the radio on Sunday saying "after all this time, it's good to say what i really feel, and really think". Now that he has no employer.

Yes, it's sad that people can't say what they really feel (within reason of course). That's why they have forums like these I suppose, so people can just let off a little steam :)
