Roast Brandon Ellis

Ellis reminds me alittle of a young Matty White, which wories me.
Has plenty of pace and run but not sure about the footy smarts.

Does anyone know what position he played the majority of his junior years?
Might still be new to the backline.

Hopefully has plenty of improvment to come.

half back

he has the smarts, he just couldn't control his nerves last night.

let's not base our opinion of him on last night, he was fantastic last season

He was played down back because he had to help Morris deal with Garlett, Betts and Yarran, he's a midfielder and a good kick and he was pulled out of his comfort zone to mind the nippy players in the pocket. He did his job, none of them got off the leash last night.
Calling him soft is a horrendous call, he puts his head over it and goes back with the flight more often than not. He is 19 and had a quiet night playing out of his role (he did run out of legs awfully quickly though) yet was not disgraced and the sub vest was what was duly needed.
It can take a while for a young 2nd year player to find his feet in the team and the game, especially when you're being used as a fill-in utility defender in your 22nd game on adept and crafty small forwards.
He'll have an okay year off the bench and that is all we need from him at this stage, he's got plenty of development and time left and will be a 10+ year player for the club.
He's a good kid clearly, get off his back after a quiet rd 1 game

Wasn't his greatest game but didn't think he was absolutely shocking. Still a second year player and will be better off from playing in such a big game.

Of course Ellis wasn't great but my point was about perspective.
Far be it for me to deny anyone the right to criticise a teenager playing in front of 80,000+ at the home of football in what some were describing as "perhaps the most important round 1 game for a decade"

Mine was about perspective also.

I dont want to see him hit over the head with a hammer either. Perspective is not gutting him because of a performance but still guiding him through a Top 8 side process which is time at Coburg if he doesnt meet standards. Hopefully good coaching is able to get him back and better able to play in a way that he can stay in the side.

it wasn't great but we all know how what he is capable of, i still dont get griffiths, he just doesn't belong down back FFS, he is a natural forward and should be played there, is plays crap down back.

Jackson had a suprisingly good game, for mine griffiths was the worst on the park but he belongs in a different position.

This thread is an absolute disgrace.
He's into his 2nd farkin year and already idiots of the highest order are likening him to Matty White. Not only did he exceed expectation in his 1st year, but he was an important part of our team. He's had a bad game and everything has turned to sh*t? Wake the heck up fellas..

Man some supporters are shocking.
Berating the kid after he didn't have the greatest of games...in round 1.
He's a second year player, get a grip.

Eat 'em alive Brandon!
their not having a go just saying he is not in best 22 and i agree , i don't no who kicking is worst his or grigg. anyway ellis out grimes in full stop.

Ellis will know better than anyone he had a poor game. Ellis has a great attitude though and he will work his arse off in training, working on what he did wrong on Thursday night. Our improved depth this year will make players work harder to keep their spot in the team. Ellis will know this and will do what ever it takes to stay in the team. Everyone has poor games but how you recover from them is what matters.

He'll be fine. It feels like now we've gotten rid of some of our absolute hacks, the board still needs to complain about somebody, even if they're not bad players (Vickery, Ellis, who will be next?) He's an elite kick of the football and okay by hand. One bad game doesn't end, or even define, his career.

I can't believe I am reading some of the comments. Did the ppl calling for his sacking, Coburb, sub etc watch any of last year or the preseason? The fact that anyone calls him soft or compares him to White demonstrates a lack of understanding of our game.

He is young, had an off night, but is already a very handy player for us. Will continue to be a very important player for us for the next 10 years.

Had a bad night on a big stage.

Should be given a chance to set the record straight with a follow up game.

Certainly had a very good debut season.

Just to clarify:

Who asked for his sacking?

Who called him a dud?

Who demanded his banishment?

All people have said is that he had a dud game, and as one of (if not the) worst performing of our 22, he should be in the gun.

Now this does mean people are bagging him. What it means is with Pettard and Vlastuin banging the door down for a senior spot, someone has to make way.

We have some competition for his position right now. For me, I'd play either Vlas or Pettard ahead of him against the saints because 1) they deserve the spot, and 2) we are not a team in development mode anymore - the best 22 are played

Was very good off the bench as the sub against the Saints - unfortunately for him, he may have put a strong case forward to be the sub going forward with such an impact :D

Various pundits had some doubt over Conca's ability in his second year at the elite level.

Give Ellis a break as he is still learning the caper, I say!

to be fair, whitey had a very good pre season, looked the goods

Has anyone else had enough of this guy? Offers nothing going forward, offers nothing in defence. His biggest asset is his tank which he only uses to accumulate turnovers. Sick of his piss weak efforts at contests and his poor decision making. He can't kick, he can't mark, he's scared of his shadow and for some reason he's guaranteed a game every week. He needs a kick up the arse. No doubt Dimwit gives him a cuddle after every game though. This guy represents everything that is Richmond right now: soft, lazy, slow, unintelligent, scared and uncoordinated. Get rid of him.

Feel like he hit a glass ceiling in terms of development a couple of years ago. Pity.

I don't want to make excuses but we always throw our players around in positions that don't suit them.

No idea why we tried him at HB. He's best suited to a wingman role. His confidence like the rest of the team is gone and his form has gone with it too

I reckon we've coached the ability out of him. He doesn't know what to do anymore and doesn't play to his strengths which is run and run and run. Don't see him break across the ground any more to make an option for a teammate, and then when he is out in space it covers up his deficiencies which is poor decision making under pressure.

We asked him to become more inside mid while we want Dusty to be more outside :drunk:
