Brandon Matera – Word had it that he was in a serious car accident during this week, so he was fortunate to be with us, let alone playing. He got the all clear and played exceptionally well – he was at his best. He got 17 disposals, nine contested, six inside 50s, four goals and four scoring assists. His forward pressure was quite phenomenal.

Draft eligibility: Gold Coast has the capacity to sign him as one of its 12 x 17 year olds born January-April 1992. If not selected, he is eligible for the 2010 NAB AFL Draft

4 goals... 4 scoring assists and phenominal forward pressure..... I hope this kid settles down a bit theres a long way to go before we are able to draft him in the first round...

Are there rules in the draft stopping someone from saying "the only club I want to play for is WCE"?

I suppose he could let clubs know that he would move back when his contract was up. Its a bit presumptuous though and I think its over the top. I think the only person to have ever done that so far is Chris Judd.

he's not an eagles supporter tho so i dont think he would say no i wanna play for the eagles unless he wants to stay in perth, i am pretty sure he supports essendon.

Didn't Clancy Rudeforth say he only wanted to be drafted by the Eagles?

yeah, he doesn't really have any direct affiliation with west coast, wally didn't play that many games for us

He just wants to stay in WA.

He grew up a essendon supporter, but is very aware of the West Coast family connection.

Its his strong preference at the moment to go to the eagles because of that.

He will not sign with GC this year and take his chances in the main draft next year.

Hopefully we have a selection in 8 to 18 range in 2010 where I see him getting picked up.

I have no doubt he would be offered a contract by the Gold Coast this year. He's showing he has the talent and the Gold Coast would rather grab a player with a famous footballing heritage than a similar player who no one would recognise.

Good quality marketable youngsters is what the GC17 will be after.

Just read in the paper that the WA coaching staff are concentrating on rotations and they are basically doubling opposition teams rotations. They are apparently using this tactic to make sure the kids are ready for the game style they will be playing at AFL level. I think they have a running side and know this tactic will help those kids be able to run over the opposition in last quarters.

Im not sure how (if) this would effect how people judge WA draftees, considering the kids they are playing against are getting 100% game time whilst they are getting 80%. Would you be more wary of kids who dominate in 4th quarters? If a kid picks up 40 posessions in 80% game time is he a better player? or are extra posessions coming because the kids getting more rest time compared to the rest of the comp ect....

Vegemite or jam?

I think the scouts concentrate more on how they go about it than actual raw statistics.

Brandon Matera has picked up a serious case of OP which threatens to derail his football carreer for at least 5 years so it would be ludicrous for any club to pick him in the draft.

Thats awful... pity its the really bad type of case too, and I thought this kid might of had a career.

I think we should draft him in the fourth round anyway or mabye rookie list just as a thankyou to the past matera clan for there service.

Does anybody know the minumin length of contracts regarding youg kids and GC ? Is it 2 yrs like draftees and rookies ?

Given GC have picks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc in next years draft and with the likelihood of eagles finishing somewhere in the bottom half again, I would think the eagles have a good chance at picking him up with their pick likely to be somewhere at 8, 10, 12 or 14.

With regard to saying you dont want to shift - that is frowned upon by AFL but in reality it happens all the time.

The contract is 2 years but kids have the option of only being signed for one with the possibility of being traded to a new club in the draft If they dont want to re-sign with GC. If Brandon was to sign with the GC for a one year contract he could then leave GC at the end of 2010 and be traded to another club, I dont know how GC would react to someone "picking" a club to be traded too.
