The only reason we drafted Grundy is because every other club passed on him. By our turn, only the midgets and hopefuls, along with a few tall forward 'prospects' remained. For a club with no ruckman, Grundy was a no-brainer, particularly as he was expected to go in the top 5. Our next two picks have somewhat underwhelmed - Kennedy and Broomhead. Not a great draft really after pick 18. Hrovat at 21 is not getting a game with the Bulldogs. Would Tim O'Brien or James Stewart been better pick-ups? Perhaps.

Our selections after Sier were astute. No complaints with Phillips, Smith, Wills and Crocker.
Must admit it beggars belief Grundy was waiting there for us.
We could have passed, all the others passed on him, but we picked him.
So to the picker of him, goes the spoils. The better draft media at the time said he was the steal of the draft.
Broomhead is actually very talented, injured but talented.
Kennedy didn't meet expectations, but in the draft you are picking babies and projecting them as adults so to speak. It's not an exact science.
We do ok overall in drafting.
That's not our weakness, it's actually a good point of ours.

We are waiting for our young group to emerge together.
May happen, may not.
Grundy, Moore, Treloar, Adams, De Goey, Maynard, Scharenberg, Aish, Crisp, Elliot, Fasolo etc
That's our young group emerging, may work may not....

To me it's not doom and gloom but potentially ok... if we adopt the Brisbane doom and gloom we will be a bust, if we adopt the positive Bulldogs attitude we may be a win....

that would of course depend on if how well the team is doing as well as his form
Who? Sier? On reliable information derived from somewhere in the bowels of this thread, I have him in my best 22 for 2018. Seems from views expressed here that 2019 or 2020 is more realistic. Is a best 22 rating in the VFL next year a reasonable expectation, or is this putting unreasonable pressure on his development? :):rainbow:

if he cant get named on an extended bench next year I think he wont be there in 2018.
maybe with gubby you mite be right.
if siers form is good and knocking down the door, but the team is playing well and cannot get a look in for that reason
he will be retained. l like the hawthorn way where some mite take up to 3 years
before they get a game. not decide after one year

Nah, even if he gets injured he will be around for a while. I don't mind the idea of him being rookie listed at the end of the year but I don't think that will be necessary. Sier looks to have good speed, size, hand and foot skills plus vision, only problem is he is still a boy. It is going to take a little while, looking forward to it.

l would for me happy if he is the best in the vfl by the end of the season, then 2018 make it to the seniors. but that's me
happy to wait. he starting from a way back, so l am prepared to wait and hope the club does to

We are not too incapable of establishing middle ground here. I would settle for best or next to best in the VFL next year.

Correct about Hawthorn. They don't play them till they are ready to perform at AFL level.

It's got me perplexed why your like a dog with a bone with this one. I remember a while back you admitted you hadn't seen him play yet. He's been injured ever since.

Many things at the club perplex me. Sier is just a distraction not an object of perplexity in himself. At least he looks physically as though he might one day be able to play. Many don't.

I reckon we had a turn the club around recruitment year last year. Treloar, Aish, Smith, Wills, Phillips, maybe Crocker. Can't see why you'd be harping on about one selection which isn't even a miss yet, especially when he looks like he has the tools to develop into a player.

He's Hines pick and I expect Hine to be gone after the draft so Gubby and co won't be as invested in hm.

You nailed it. A project. Why use that pick on a project? If he was a 4th it'd be a different story.
The key to projects is to get in first before somebody else has the same bright idea. We did very well with later picks Phillips Wills and Smith so theres no loss at all with Sier, we got the late picks we were looking for. All draft picks are punts.

Dontg forget Pavlich was eligible to be drafted as a seventeen year old in 1998 and every club in the land passed on him. Probably considered to be too much of a project..

I disagree. projects are gambles. I'm happy to gamble on a late pick (marsh) not our first.

Just beceuse somebody on Bigfooty says hes going to take four years doesnt mean its true. Happy to sit on the fence. Our real first rounder this year is Treloar, anyway.
I'm on the fence. I hope he makes it. I wont like the pick if he hasn't played a senior game in 2017.

Just relax and let the kid be.
He only played 2-3 TAC Cup game.
Was very unfit when we recruited him & got injured and missed most of the second half of the year.
He needs a couple of seasons to catch up on his fitness.
He might be a bust - but he might end up being a superstar.
Glenn Luff from Champion Data has high hopes for him & he doesn't barrack for Pies.

Between 32 and 58 (where we took Phillips) which player should we have chosen instead of Sier using your amazing powers of hindsight?

And did you call this at the time?

At a quick glance I dont see any household names.

After all if youre saying we took him too early then clearly theres some player you would have preferred.

off the top of my head.. Marcus Adams for one... a young KPP.. ready made.. would probably be our 2nd best key defender right now and in the best 22 if we had've taken him.

Adams Matheison Silvagni (bid) Mitch Brown (handy KPP depth) Bonner.

I'm still trying to work out why we took a vanilla inside mid as a project when they're a dime a dozen in the draft
