I didn't rate either Moore's or Maynard's VFL form as being worthy of a senior debut. Wouldn't say they struggled but certainly weren't starring. Think they'll both be okay. They'd be the most recent ones.
Some players play to a certain level be it AFL or VFL. Toovey played at the same level in VFL and then AFL. Maynard looks like another who plays at the same level whatever the football code. Moore was different. He was injured and returning to VFL to get fit. Some players look too good at VFL level, but can't make the adjustment in pace and movement of the ball that you get in AFL. Sier is different again because he played mostly school footy before being recruited and then was mostly injured this season and had limited exposure to VFL. Now he's training in the rehabilitation group, so it's almost impossible to predict how he's going to go next year.

I'm a simple man, simple needs... 2 things should occur before a player gets a senior game... firstly, player needs to be performing consistently at reserves level to earn a senior game, and secondly, a spot needs to open up in the senior team either through injury or form. I the case of Maynard and Moore only 1 of those things occurred. Of the 2, Maynard then had the greater impact against the Dawks, Moore was lucky to retain his spot for the following week.

I only raised these 2 players in response to a specific post, not to open up a discussion on the merits of their respective debuts.

Showed great marking, great leading, great agility and speed... that's what got people excited.
I walked up the steps at Vic park next to the coffee wagon at about the 1 min mark of that game and as soon as I could see the ground Darcy just clunked one about 20m out. I thought he looked pretty likely that day too :thumbsu:

Really hoping Sier can get some games. His size for his age is frightening.

Yep, and 2016 is his first year, not a hard concept really. Just double checked, it's still 2016.
No, you're wrong (as usual), he has completed his first season, and he has completed his first year, funny thing about facts is (like me) they are correct.

I don't necessarily agree with the first part - at least depending on what you view as "performing".

I think it depends on what role they want the player to provide at senior level. As a first gamer (and probably whole 1st year) Moore would not be expected to hold down a KPF spot succesfully. He did not need to kick a bag of goals or take a ton of marks. He needed to be a guy that will keep his defender honest and keep the fwd line flowing around him. (Ie. Everything Gault couldnt do). What "performance" would you look for at VFL level to determine if he is ready for that? More important than anything on the stats would just be using the "eye test" of just how ready he looks, and whether he can do those small intangibles that are actually necessary to be a succesful AFL player. (But yes his 1st game was earlier than I thought it would have been)

I agree though that a spot needs to be available - you dont drop a performing best 22 player just to give a youngster a try.

Feel free to cling to whatever delusions of correctness you like, as you say the facts are correct and he remains a 1st year player until December 31. I don't really care if you agree or not, but they're the facts.

Not sure if you are not agreeing with me being a simple man with simple needs but I can assure you I am.

I have very meagre expectations of kids in their debut games at senior level. It's a bonus when you get more than that.

In terms of his VFL performances leading up to his debut, Moore (R8 - Casey @ Casey) returned from his hammy injury, he along with Reid played limited game time, had 6 possessions but didn't trouble the scorer, didn't really impact the game (footnote, losing Moore and Reid for much of the 2nd half compounded other injuries and cost us the game as we were overrun in the last with nobody on the bench). Round 9 v the Bees @ Vic Park he had 4 possessions and didn't bother the scorer, Round 10 we had a Bye, Round 11 v BH Hawks he had 3 possessions and fortuitously kicked 3 goals 0 behinds. I was at all 3 of those games, he played as a KPF and he struggled to impact. I expect more than that. Thought Scharenberg and Marsh were a long way ahead of Moore in terms of deserving a senior game.

As I said, I thought he was lucky to retain his spot following his debut. Played 60-70% game time for 4 possessions in a game where White and Cloke were holding down the KPF spots. People talk about his effort and yes he ran a lot in that game but wasn't credited with 1 tackle. I understand the reasons for playing him beyond his debut but as I said at the time, he was lucky to get the debut (gifted some would say), and then lucky to retain his place.

I really like the looks of Sier. Showed a fair bit against Geelong in round 7 and Werribee(not certain of the team) in round 8. Big strong boy with speed a good foot skills, I really like! Unfortunately got injured when he was starting to have an impact.
I would be happy with a consolidation year from him, build on his game time and fitness. Has serious AFL attributes just needs time to put it all together. I'll be unhappy if he doesn't start pounding down the AFL door when he's 20/21.

So it's a fact that he's a first year player who was drafted 13 months ago? do you even know what a fact is?

And BTW, you're the one being a Flog about it.

No not disagreeing with you, and in fact do agree with you that Moore was probably lucky to get his spot, and probably lucky to keep it at the start.

But I just think its horses for courses, and different things are looked for in different positions - and given the role he was being asked to play I have no problem with Moore getting the jump on others. It would be different if he was a midfielder or defender where we had depth, or if there was a better prospect for a tall fwd position sitting and waiting.

Whatever, you choose to ignore the standard calendar year used by just about everyone else, good luck to you.

Well that is surprising. Hard to imagine that a kid who'll turn 24 in May is showing more than a kid who turned 19 10 days ago. For the record, Wills is 1cm taller and 2kg lighter so a massive difference.
I'll back Wills in my team with the runs on the board any day.

Lol. So according to TG Wills is bigger than Sier, but Schade and Patton are about the same size.

A first year doesn't include the tiny part of the year they're drafted anymore than a grade 6 bring accepted into a high school late in the year makes them a 2nd year high school student in year 7.
