Did Sayers scream leader of Carlton before he became president? Not for mine, but he has done well in his short stint.

From my limited understanding of this area, Sayers to me seems a war time president whereas the next will be a peace time one. Sayers needed to sort out the on-field mess that was left from end of the MLG era. As far as I'm aware, under his watch we have appointed some really solid people into the important roles within the club and they should see us through the most stable era in our modern history. The next president's role will be to ensure that things are running smoothly and not interfere too much. I think someone who is currently on the board, like Priestley or Kinnersly, will be able to provide the continuity that we need.
 
This is the next big piece we need to get right.

Watching the presser today, I felt it was a bit cringe worthy. Especially the beginning when he's touching them jokingly, but they seemed a bit embarrassed, especially "cooky".

Lukes heart is in the right place but he's not at their level.

As we approach the end of the year, I just wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for your incredible support of this football club.

The passion and connection you have to this Club, along with more than 100,000 of your fellow Carlton family, is the reason why we have a competitive advantage that is unmatched in this competition.

And my word has it been on full display over the last week.

1,500 people on a Friday morning at La Trobe University to watch our AFL side train, while I can reveal we have had 7,000 additional Carlton members signed up compared to this time last year.

I am sure you feel it in your interactions, be it in person or online with our players and coaches – but there is a genuine gratitude they feel to be able to represent this Club and our shared identity as Carlton people.

Our club is nothing without its people, and at Carlton we are many.

From different walks of life, with different stories but connected by one thing – our love for this place.

We all might be getting ready to put a full stop on 2024, but our footy club has been charging to the line.

We’ve had the AFL program up north on the Sunshine Coast since Sunday, putting in a mountain of work.

A massive credit to our players and coaches, they have maximised every single moment of the camp and just completed their final main training session up there this morning, before they fly home to their loved ones.

Living in each other’s pockets has only made them closer, which as I’m sure you have seen so far this pre-season, how closely connected they are now, their care for one another has become a trademark of this playing group.

So too has been their willingness to step into and thrive with different challenges this pre-season.

The AFL side have adapted their program, with IKON Park resurfacing works commencing at the start of December, meaning almost all training sessions will be held at La Trobe University until the end of January.

It is industry-best practice to complete minor renovations every 6-7 years as the ground gets a build-up of thatch, which reduces drainage capability through the winter months.

One to put in your calendars in the New Year, Saturday 8 February, our next Open Training session will be held back at our home at IKON Park after the completion of our ground’s resurfacing works.

The players were also thrown a different off-season program to past years, focusing on speed and power, and, when left to their own devices over the break, they were true pros.

Speaking with our coaching and high-performance group, the players could not have applied themselves any better to date, reporting back in outstanding condition has allowed them to complete a quality, month-long training block prior to the New Year break.

Monday night was also significant for our football club – as we welcomed three new and exciting young talents to IKON Park via the AFLW Draft.

We are delighted to welcome Poppy Scholz, Sophie McKay and Lou-Lou Field to Carlton, all set to forge their own legacy in Navy Blue.

They join recent recruits in Sifora O’Connell and Aisling Reidy from County Clare in Ireland, as well as Tara Bohanna who comes to the Club having captained the Gold Coast Suns for the past three seasons.

Just weeks after we welcomed Ben and Lucas Camporeale, it warms the Navy Blue heart to see Sophie join her sister Abbie in continuing the McKay name at Carlton – made famous by their father Andrew, a Premiership player, Best and Fairest winner, four-time All Australian and Carlton Hall of Famer.

Our club has continued to take great pride in our commitment to do good off the field also, and that was proven in 2024.

Our Carlton Respects initiative, which is unwavering in our commitment to gender equality for the prevention of violence against women, reached over 4,000 students across 54 primary school this year.

We also launched our Loorende-Gat Business and Entrepreneur program, which is aimed at creating and fostering a thriving community of First Nations people and businesses.

It has been a strong finish to the year for our football club – one underpinned by considered ambition and humility.

A shared understanding of what we are capable of in 2025 but knowing the work that needs to be done.

For now though, I wish you a fantastic holiday period Aph.

I hope you are able to be present with those who matter most to you and I can’t wait for us all to come together again, as one club, in 2025.

March 13 cannot come quick enough.
