Trouble with Jones playing a season in the SANFL is that he will play CHB or FB because we don't have a lot of tall defenders.

At 186cm he is a HBFer at AFL level, so he is being asked to do different jobs at SANFL compared to AFL. Not sure that's good for his development.

Yep agreed. But.... I'm hoping that we get some KPDers in the upcoming draft period that can take the CHB/FB roles at SANFL level. Which would then allow Lachie Jones to settle into a flanker role in the maggies defence.

If we have Pasini, Pick33 or 60 (hoping at least 1 is a KPD, better if both are) and perhaps a Lord-type being redefined as a KPD then we dont need Jones to play that role. He can then develop his game as the natural defender (flanker) he has always been at junior levels.

He's not a defender at AFL level.

At the lower levels, his aggression is seen as a strength because the opposition doesn't have the ability to exploit it. It's why I'd stick with pairing him up with Powell-Pepper at half forward.

I've seen Lachie play for many years and he has never been a midfielder or worse yet a forward. Dumb arse Hinkley wants his 'pressure acts' in the forward area and tries to shoehorn players with certain physical attributes into those 'pressure act' forwards. He is trying to turn McEntee who has always been a midfielder through his juniors into some sort of tackling small forward. Then people get frustrated with him coz he doesnt have the natural instincts to play as a forward when necessary.

Sometimes (rarely) that works and its a fair enough risk to take with a speculative draft pick or midseason pickup.

But Lachie was the equivalent of a pick 16 - 18. If Hinkley wanted a pressure act forward he would have been better off picking someone like Beau McCreery who at least had an idea of how to be an effective forward as well as having the physical attributes to be that pressure act forward. And used the draft capital used up bidding on Lachie to go after a more pressing need like a key defender.

Jones frustrates me.

I see glimpses but my jury is out on him.

Sinn I see as like a bonus raffle ticket, hoping he lives up to what he cost us which wasn't his fault btw.

Bergman I've always liked, the more he's out there the better he'll be.

Someone not mentioned yet is Junior. If he shows up lean mean & hungry then tighten my seatbelt.

Farrell.

3 x 20+ possession games in the last 4 games of the year, with a disparate potpourri of advanced stats like contested marks and goal assists.

18 months removed from the ACL and with a full preseason there’s no reason why he can’t put it all together.

Are kick-ins counted? because he did a bit of that down back. Either way getting him more involved is always a plus.

I'm big fan of Faz and never get tired of watching him kick.

As for Georgi boy if he sorts out his radar and is given room to move (same with Todd) then we're in for a treat.

JHF well natural progression in a good environment should see him blossom. I sense he likes responsibility and in front of a

big loud crowd he will thrive.

Que?

Powell-Pepper kicked 24 goals in 22 games. If I could get two players making the same contribution in our forward line alongside Dixon and Marshall we'd win the flag.
Spp works hard and got the reward specially this year. But in my opinion he is not a natural forward (happy to keep playing him there spp did really well) my point is more can we fit both spp and Jones there? Because neither are Natural forwards.

Charlie Dixon as an All Australian fullback

Hopefully it turns out like my 2023 season of AFL Evo 2.

Jones needs to settle into a position one way or the other or he'll end up with the Paul Stewart curse where he's always on the fringe and losing his place to positional specialists.

I'm hoping to see Georgiades or Butters break out and have a huge season.

Jase... the guy oozes class, for pick 60 his impersonation of a 1st Rd pick is convincing.

The kid has got it all and once he fills out... watch out.

It's no knock on Wanganeen-Milera taken at pick 11 but i'd love to see them 1v1 in open play.

Throw Rankine in too for that matter once Jase has put on a bit of size.

Jase pulling Rankins' daks down in a 1v1 contest. Pick 60 wipes pick 3 hardie ****'en ha ha.

Jones should be developed in Jonas’s third tall role. Not sure he will break out as such rather incrementally progress. See him as a Maynard with more speed.

Burgoyne will be a gun, but still needs to develop body to have a bigger impact

I think it’s hard for role players (ie flankers/wingers defenders to have a “Rozee” type breakout.

But the great thing is we have 6-10 who could take their game to another level, and we only have Jonas/Boak/Dixon/Lycett /McKenzie to phase out of the oldies

JHF is the one for me.

Why do people keep thinking jones is a 3rd tall? He’s 186cm. He’s not a 3rd tall.

He can play above his height sure, but not that far, and also trying to play him as a tall just takes a strength of his and turns it into a weakness.

Breakouts generally come from being given opportunity they haven't had before.

The obvious candidates then have to be Sinn or Bergman on Amon's old wing.

SPP may not have been a natural forward, but he has worked hard and is now our high pressure medium forward. When you think that he really only moved to the position in 2022, scored 24 goals (second highest for the club) then he should be even better in 2023. The question is who will be his medium to small forward partner(s), and it should not be Jones.

Spp had a really good year and has stamped himself as well and truly a first 22 player in that half forward role ..

… but I think he’s pretty well at or close to his ceiling in that position.

I wouldn’t bank at much lmprovement coming from him. Any uptake in goals scored would come from us being a better team.

Wouldn't surprise me if Burgoyne just goes bang next year and plays every game and becomes a valuable player for us. Has all the tools. Only worry really is that Daddy Donuts will be in full job saving mode so he'll probably need a few injuries to get a look in at the start.

Even accounting for his father son status, it's insane how low he slipped in the draft. Every bit a first round talent IMO.
