Nine Network records the highest ratings ever for State of Origin as it grabs first three spots on the chart.
More than 2.5 million viewers watched Queensland defeat NSW in the opening game of this year's State of Origin, making it the number one show of Wednesday night.
The State of Origin opener, which was played in Melbourne, attracted 2.515 million viewers in the metropolitan markets, which is the best ever audience for a State of Origin game.
The audience peaked at 2.843 million and a further 1.4 million viewers watched the game according to the regional figures.

Incredible that it rated almost 5 million. I wonder how many were watching the game in groups on a screen.

State of Origin I in Melbourne the most watched interstate game of all time

LAST night's opening State of Origin match in Melbourne was the most watched in Origin history, with 3.957 million people tuning in across the country.

Across the five mainland capital cities, the TV viewership was a record 2.515 million people, while in country areas, 1.442 million people tuned in, also a record, the Australian Rugby League Commission said today.

The national, five capital city and regional figures are the highest for any Origin match since the OzTAM ratings began in 2001.

Queensland won the controversial match at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium 18-10.

I also love how much exposure the game got in Victoria.
