Breakthrough & surprises

Also, i never thought our rucking stocks were that bad and was a little disappointed when we went for a genuine ruckman in the draft this yr. A forward marking ruck like laycock would be great, but my understanding is that meeson is pretty much a ruck and thats it. If we have just biglands and hudson, it isnt star studded, but it will do the job. Also, this is where jimmy should be earning his money, like he did with hudson, getting gold through the rookie draft like a cox or brogan and these types. Apart from laycock who is more a forward, i cant think of the last first round ruck to make it and we've had our fair share of them. Would of been better to grab a midfielder with pace or a key position forward prospect i'm thinking..

That's a fact - picking young ruckmen inm the draft is a real lottery anmd most do not make it or live up to their junior hype.

White is a an exception - but even there he doesn't dominate as you would think.

Josh Fraser is the bigest joke - deadset afraid of a physical contest - a future magpie capt -

Meesen way way to early - the kids only 19 for gods sake - and you have to factor homesickness in.

Laycock is a beauty - this guy will be something "special"

what has been the biggest surprise?

For me, Hudson

Hudson, Mattner, Bock, Skipworth, Thompson, Rutten and Shirls.

Hudson - Thought he could be good player for us. But he has more than exceeded my expectation. His clearances in the centre have been crucial to our success.

Mattner - Saw some really good signs in last years sanfl finals,

Bock - Saw some really bad signs in last years finals series. Had him in my "possible delist in 2005" group,

Skip - Had him in my "possible delist in 2005" group,

Thompson - Thought he was good but not this good. ladies and gents, we now have a captain in waiting,

Rutts - Must be in line for AA honours,

Shirls - See Skip. Love the way he has gone about it. Regularly figures at the bottom of the packs. Huge heart, limited skill - see Bickley.

 thats nasty against Bicks - wouldn't say he was skillful, but also wouldn't say his skill was limited (see Perrie) ;)

dont know if skippy can qualify, he will make it now, if he hasnt already. NC loves him, like doughty. The problem will be when Roo and Co retire that guys like skippy will just be players and wont be able to fill the role that our champs leave. But in terms of the medium to short term, i'd say hes fairly comfortable with his spot. Better off playing knights and VB with far more scope imo, but NC is the coach ;)

I second that. If Skippy is one of our frontline midfielders when Roo, Goody, Macca and Edwards are no longer filling midfield roles then we will be in deep sh*te.

2008 + midfield Thommo, Johncock, Reilly, Mattner, VB, Knights, Gibbs, Aish, 2005 draftee, 2006 draftee with the fab 4 making brief cameos.

Agreed - love the kids commitment but he is just filling in time till the Van Berlos, Knights and this years crop come through - he'll probably get 50+ games of AFL which is a real credit to him ;) :)

I'll go along with Skippy - he;s half a chance to make it IMO. He's shown something.

As for the retained dud, I'll be majorly annoyed if Smith survives unless there's a sharp improvement this year over previous years.

Mattner should consolidate a spot this year as should Hudson.

Modesty prevents me from pointing out that I'm batting 3 from 3 .......

As for Smith ........ nothing's changed there either.

 Thats not 3 from 3 Macca

Thats two from two and a classic "sitting on the fence" position  on Skippy - could have claimed that one no matter which way it went

For me it has been: Mattner, Hudson, Shirley and......wait for it.......
THOMPSON!!! :) Neil Craig has to be mentioned to ;) !

Oops.

I could have picked any of about 39 players and I would have been right. But instead I picked the other one.

Bock for me. I can't believe what I have been hearing whilst I have been away, so looking forward now for the rest of the season to be pleasantly surprised ... & eating plenty of humble pie! :o

Welcome back mate :)

Bocky has been a bit of a revelation at CHB which has allowed Kenny to go forward and at least give us a decent forward structure.

Cheers Stiffy. :)

My flight from Instanbul was delayed 13.5hrs, meaning I got off 1 plane in KL, ferried directly to the 2nd plane for my flight to Adelaide (without my luggage). ie. Aprox 17.5hrs straight flying with a 5min break, so was buggared when I arrived this AM. Great to sleep in my own bed again though. Awesome trip & memories though. Not sure how motivated I will be at work tomorrow after 8.5 weeks away.

Really missed the footy, so can't wait til Sunday to see how our side is performing under Craig - particularly the likes of Bock & other players who have lifted us this year.

Welcome back Kane. Those long hauls are very tiring. Just for curiosity which country was the highlight for you out of what would have been many highlights?

Mountain views in the fiord region of Norway were breathtaking - even better than the Swiss/Austrian Alps IMO - though they weren't bad either.

The Greek Islands were very relaxing (2 Euro 500ml beers lying on the beaches), though was disappointed in Athens & no rush to go back there.

Only in Paris briefly to want to spend more time there next time ... though pity about the people who live there.

Kane - can we assume youve reconsidered your Smith>>>>>>>>>Bock stance ;)

Yeah, tredders16 loved the Greek Islands but said the same thing about Athens - a concreter's delight he called it.

I thought Paris was sensational Kane, but had the advantage of being able to speak French. You speak French, and all of a sudden they can speak English, even though they previously couldn't.

Ladhams and Schuback

....when in doubt I've gone for the 2 guys who I think have the most raw talent. I'm a big Marty Man...although I think good judgement is being replaced by hope ATM. I'll stay on the Marty Mattner bandwagon for 1 more year.

I really hope Shirley can do something. He has some good second tier qualities that others don't....

Ladhams and Shuback..... ........I guess my thinking here was that it was time for these guys to breakthrough or face delisting....looks like the latter.

Always been a Marty fan......I'm glad NC has shown faith.

As for my comment on Shirley - hopefully this underlines the fact that I genuinely don't have it in for Shirley just for the sake of it.......but I will continue to query players who have been around a long time for not many games. Shirley along with Skipworth....while still transition players in my mind are the 2 who seemed to be on a slow boat to nowhere before round 1....but have certainly grabbed their opportunities since. Good luck to them.

welcome back Kane - I just hope that you adjust back to oz time much quicker than me!

He didn't say that did he?? He must have been p*ssed if he did!! :D

Kane, what were you thinking??
Well it would appear Bock has realised some potential I was unaware of (& still haven't witnessed personally), as I did rate him lower than Smith (who I didn't / don't rate that highly either).

Hmmm, humble pie. :o
