Google the postcard bandit. A lot of people knew his namesake the minute he got drafted.

I did get it, but not until I read Saintly's post.

I'm curious if you could entrap some people by choosing a random inane post, and then quoting it with the comment: "That's hilarious, but it'll go way over most people's heads." I may test it one day. Do people fake laugh on the internet like some do in real life?

I found it more of a hehehe comment than hilarious, certainly not a comment that took a large amount of brain power to figure out... Interesting question, I think a lot of politeness goes out on the window on the internet. They probably do fake it in some circumstances. Most people seem to gives likes and reacts to things they agree with, that aligns with their own world view, or they argue against things they don't like. I'm tending to move away from opinion based content and more towards things that make me laugh but genuinely funny stuff is hard to find, but you do find a couple of genuinely LOL worthy comments a day.

Online culture has developed a new social dynamic I reckon, I think most people these days have more online interactions than they have real life interactions, and a different set of rules is in place. People say a lot of shit they wouldn't dare say to people's faces. On facebook I find a lot of people laugh for the sake of supporting something they are agree with, when in real life a simple 'yeah' would suffice. There becomes sort of tribal alliances to whatever your chosen cause is and who you want to rag on.

Some people say a lot of shit just because they know it will be popular rather than coming up with an original thought they don't know what reaction it will draw. Safe comments and posts don't interest me. But generally the comment that is most agreeable and least offensive will get all the positive reactions, especially if it is PC.

Pretty sure it was a relative.

I don't think so, there is nothing online to suggest that is the case, and that would make them very unoriginal names, and also the fact the postcard bandit was already a notorious bank robber and prison escapee and was actually captured after 6 years on the run the same year Brenden Abbott the footballer was born.

Having had experience with an extended family member who escaped prison and was on the run, they are not flavour of the month amongst everyone in their family as that means anyone who could possibly be housing them ends up under surveillance and phone taps which is not pleasant... so I can't see them naming a nephew after him.

My uncle through marriage is almost as big a notorious prison escapee as the postcard bandit so I would know, he had a book written about him and we were surveilled as kids when he got out.

I stand to be corrected but I don't see it happening.

Shit hey... poor kid, must have had a tough upbringing. His Dad in jail naming his son after his brother who was Australia's most wanted man... a proud criminal family by the sound of it...

When you look at some of Hines calls:
A, kid from a notorious criminal family.
Pick 6 on a kid which other clubs crossed out due to a heart condition.
A second rounder on a deaf kid.

You've gotta wonder about some of the criticisms. Supposedly Richmond are taking risky kids, and Hine is always playing it safe.

We've taken our fair share of ruffians and damaged goods for sure. I think deep down we all know people with a bit of campaigner in them make better footballers usually.

It was discussed a fair bit when we drafted him. I'm assuming you didn't visit Bigfooty as much back then?

I liked it, but moved on and was like eh it wasn’t 26 likes funny.

The penny dropped about ten seconds later. Outstanding.
The subtlety in not over playing the post, just keeping it deadpan with simply mentioning the postcard- that’s what a liked from Obese Arachnid

he’s been in terrific form lately.

We were all meant to become more open minded due to the larger number and greater diversity of thoughts we were going to be exlosed to. But the opposite has occurred. With the help of Google algorithms, we just read material that confirms our point of view and have become more righteous and narrow minded.

Nope, it’s definitely his uncle. There was a big discussion about it earlier in this thread iirc
Hard bodied defender/forward who will provide some grunt around the contests as well as a prodigious kick. Shares the same name as his uncle, the infamous “Postcard Bandit”.

A little interesting that this has developed into comments on internet comments, sharing viewpoints, etc., when in truth the whole postcard bandit sending postcards never happened but was a sham created by Queensland cops to manipulate the media.

Feel bad for him. It's very hard to break out of the lifestyle your family brought you up with and then to come into an AFL environment with polar opposite expectations and accountability, it would have been quite an adjustment. I hope his footy and life is going well and he's living a good life.

Still saddens me to think of a kid with so much talent being lost to the game. Hopefully he can resolve the issues that dog him (whatever they are) and get his life together. Or maybe he has, and football just isn't a priority.
