If our competition is forced to pay 'overs' for players that never wanted to come here anyway, I don't really see that as a loss.

Losing out on Clark is going to look really bad if we've missed out on all the big names this off season

maybe to some media and BF flogs - you have to trust in the Freo recruitment strategies overall - they do seem to know what they are doing and how far they are willing to go - its not shwab hour any more

didnt freo go to the trouble of posting an article on their website with clark stating he only wants to become a docker, only for him to end up at melbourne

the reality is even with the bigger dollars thrown in front of players the appeal of becoming a docker isnt high.

list of failed poaching attempts with big $$:
clark
franklin
cloke
goddard

sure theres more!!! surely its a worry. why bother. why not back in your recruiters to find the best talent via the draft?

The more you post the more you soud like a bitter flog. Some of the players you have listed there eg Cloke and Franklin have/would've been targeted by most clubs.

Clark wanted to be a Docker it was only the deal that didn't go through so you have that completely wrong. And saving picks on the Clark trade enabled us to go into the draft with higher picks you nutter.

And what about the appeal of remaining at St Kilda? Doesn't seem to exist. Even the receptionist wants to get out of St Kilda.

Unless you can actually post something of credibility and intellect I suggest you go back to you own board. Or like all these players and staff are you just trying to get out of the St Kilda board?

that explains the StK recruitment policy - only go for players they definitely know they will get, that way they can never fail, so don't go for anyone - gee, sound more like a govt manager everyday - keep the seat warm but don't dare to actually make a difference

Unless you're the best coach in the business...

So let me get this straight - one of your best players, who you drafted with a #1 draft pick, is about to walk out on your imploding club and you're trying to troll another random club because they might not be the ones stealing him off you?

Ok then...

Let Defacto have his fun guys. His team lost one of the best coaches last year, they're about to lose a number one draft pick this year, and they're coming off a season where they only managed to beat 4 teams outside the bottom 4, trolling other teams is all he has

Ah St Kilda.
Lost their gun coach and replaced him with a bloke who's the biggest FIGJAM since Buckley. Now the rats are deserting the sinking ship too. Their implosions for as long as I can remember are just mounting up.
56 years and counting!

Come on be fair

It's 46

This St Kilda poster is a tosser, but it is still a concern that we are not going to be a high priority for free agents, especially the big ones worth chasing.

You could say that it shouldn't matter about moving interstate for a few years ... but if a player is worth chasing, then he is probably going to have a similar offer on the table from one of the big Melbourne clubs. If they are not from Perth, or like the idea of playing for a big Melbourne club, we aren't going to have much luck unless we offer an insane contract. If we offered Goddard something stupid like 5 million over 4 years, then he probably would have joined us.

Not sure who is coming out of contract next year ... maybe Wells is about the best we can hope for.

The only things worth concerning yourself with are the things you can change.

We can't change our location (well, we can move to Cockburn... wink, wink) so we'll just have to accept we aren't going to be a high priority for eastern states players.

We'll just have to cash on in West Aussies whenever possible and back our drafting to do the rest. I'd hate to see us go back to being obsessed with throwing a fortune at the latest messiah every year anyway.

The rumour is $800k a season from essendon which, if correct, is serious money for a player whose best is very good but does have a tendency to sulk if things are going his way. The saints would have as good a clue as anyone as to goddards value and the likelihood that they aren't going to match that sort of offer is instructive.

To an extent you guys proved your mettle last year with Clarke in that there is a line that you won't cross if the price is deemed too high. Free agency is going to throw up some pretty juicy names and fans are going to get hardons about the possibility of pinching a star from a rival club but the reality is the smart clubs won't throw everything at those players because of the domino effect it could have through the playing group with the risk you could lose your own star

I suspect free agency will see more lynch type moves than goddards in the long run

There's the crux of it esti, we're not just another club to the Saints, going by BF most of their fans loath us with every inch of their being and having an enormous chip on their shoulders, which has grown exponentially after poaching Lyon and Dawson.

In one way I agree, Clark did look pretty good at Melbourne certainly went past their number one draft pick at a rate of knots.

But who would having been feeling worse at the end of the year - Freo as they went into the final series and have now set themselves up for a positive 2013 or Clark who has no opportunity in the forseeable future of being in a team that is even competitive. Hope the extra money is keeping you warm at night Clarky!!

From what I have been told of Clark. These Sucess isn't high on his priorities, whilst money is... I'd say the extra cash is keepi g him content...

I'm pretty happy we kept Clarke, with his athleticism, it'll click one preseason and we'll all wonder where this great player came from. He didn't quite have the size this year to make a big impact, but he certainly improved on previous seasons. Looking forward to see what he can put together with another preseason and another 5kg. Have a look at his highlight package in the WAFL late in the season, he's capable of chase downs, dummying midfielders, breaking tackles but just doesn't have the size yet to do it at AFL.

ESSENDON has confirmed that it has lodged a contract offer for St Kilda midfielder Brendon Goddard under the Gillette AFL free agency period.
