Demon back in Melbourne, but not for long
Michael Gleeson | October 10, 2007
TRAVIS Johnstone stepped off a plane from Thailand last night to decide where he wants to play football next year. It is unlikely to be at Melbourne.
The Brisbane Lions and Sydney are among the clubs to have expressed keen interest in the classy midfielder, with the Lions believed to be the strongest candidate to acquire the Demons' former No. 1 draft pick.
Johnstone remains tied to Melbourne for 2008 on a substantial contract, which could be the main obstacle to a deal. There was speculation last night that Johnstone, should he agree to move north, could be traded to Brisbane for pick 14, which the Lions would be likely to receive from Collingwood for ruckman Cameron Wood.
Perhaps mindful of improving its pace through the midfield, Melbourne joined Richmond in interest in Bulldog Jordan McMahon. Port Adelaide retains an attraction to the former South Australian, but it is believed McMahon is less excited about a return to Adelaide.
Richmond football director Greg Miller flew to Brisbane last night to talk to small forward Rhan Hooper about a shift.
Geelong coach Mark Thompson also called frustrated Brent Prismall yesterday to placate the midfielder, after the player had asked the club on Monday to trade him. The 21-year-old is under contract for next year.
Collingwood defender Shane Wakelin's resurgent second half of the year has prompted him to postpone retirement. He has signed a new one-year contract. Melbourne midfielder Brock McLean is set to sign a new twoyear contract today, dispelling speculation he could be involved in a trade.
The Demons also are expected to appoint former Essendon defender and Western Bulldogs assistant coach Sean Wellman to their off-field team.
Carlton is talking to former Bulldogs and Power defender Brett Montgomery about joining it as an assistant coach.
Not much there, but just thought i'd point it out. What do you all think?
Edit: Just read a new article posted
■Carlton has appointed former Western Bulldog and Port Adelaide player Brett Montgomery to its coaching staff as an assistant to Brett Ratten."
