Picture this back six rebounding and delivering the ball in 2012...

B: Duigan Jamison Tuohy
HB: Russell Bower Laidler

Yarran could take over Scotland's spot if he retires.

Hopefully Thornton and O'hAilpin are depth players next year...If we want to become a top two side, then by rights, these two shouldn't be anywhere near our best 22. ..Watson could be a different athlete after a full pre-season and capable of playing some good footy in his second season...Adelaide's Phil Davis had a promising second year... Bret could look at a short term role at the Giants or even the Suns who will need a defender...One Carlton poster claimed that the Suns enquired about Mark Austin last year...Their backline is pretty weak with Brown, Bock and Coad their experienced and mature defenders...Giants would be a better bet.

Stop calling for a pass 50m behind play and trying to switch play when nothing is there!!!!!!

If he can stop doing that then Thornton woldn't actually be so bad.

Thornton isn't a best 22 player when the squad is at full fitness - but it very rarely is.

He's not our preferred option as a tall defender but given the injury status of a number of talls he is certainly an adequate replacement.

He has no doubt improved on last season which was a shocker (on and off field, it seems) but something has happened for the better and he is now back in the mix.

Thornton has been an excellent servant of the CFC and should be remembered as such. Not a star by any stretch of the imagination, but in the right structure and environment, he can be a contributor.

He isn't a part of our long term plan but a few injuries here and there and he becomes an absolute necessity. Bower and Jamison are ahead of him as tall defenders, but outside of those two the cupboard, at least at this stage, is quite bare. Austin is constantly out of sorts, and whilst Watson and McCarthy are no doubt promising, they are not ready just yet.

As such I'd gladly give him a 1 year contract. Still has something to offer but will be pushed out sooner rather than later. Until then, he's a solid backup plan.

He is better than white and Watson on form and well bower can't get his body right. T bird has been very solid.
Granted - although Watson zoning off playing Thornton's role vs Melb last week - WOW ..imagine that left boot with THAT much time and space to let rip!!
White...mmmmmmm he's injured atm and Thornton is NO where near him.
Not a great endorsement - He's better than a rookie 18yo who's played 2 games and in front of 2 blokes who are injured:o

Thornton has been coached to play to his limitations and he has been doing it pretty well as a loose man. In past seasons he tried to be a playmaker but just slowed momentum with his sideways and backward kicks. Now he gets rid of it straight away, into the hands of a designated playmaker. It works fine.

But his limitations mean that Bower is a better option when fit and in form. Until then Thornton is a good, experienced, solid back up.

in times past someone like thornton would be captain of the reserves.

That's so spot on I've had to inoculate myself against measles and chicken pox after reading it. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Stop living in 2010. Its clear Tbird has listened to the coaches instructions and changed his ways and altered his game. In 2011, the way he has played, he is in our best 22. People cant get past the fact he has taken his criticisms on board and done something about it.

Well said:thumbsu:

Did a fine job again tonight.

Don't like him one-on-one. Gets out-muscled and exposed for pace too often. Goes alright in the loose role, I guess.

I still don't believe he is a long term solution for us, nor do I think he's in our best 22, but credit where it is due.

T-Bird was fantastic today.

T-Bird had a great 2nd half, so yes credit where credit is due. But he contested poorly in the 1st half, and was had a few terrible 1-on-1's that detract from his game. Definitely NOT fantastic.

I don't condone bagging of players, and Thornton has been with us a long time, and is a good player to have on the list...at the very least he is excellent depth.

It's too bad he didn't have this type of game against a capable forward line.

He was great, there's no doubting that. However, if he wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do this stuff against decent sides.

so we drop him...just trying to get at what you mean..if you know yourself that is
Of course we don't drop him; I was in no way hinting that we should.

My comment was pretty straight forward.
