Going back to his old days isnt he...... Played as one of our main forwards in 2002 and kicked a few goals. has played most of the NAB cup in the forward line and it has payed off, 4 goals last night, 3 the week before, he is in stellar form and could he be a definent forward option for us this year.

No....he will play as a wingman again to help out in defence AND run forward

But he's a good option at certain points in a game to throw the opposition off balance - he'd be hard to plan for by most AFL coaches

Give him free reign to roam where ever he pleases & by the time he cruises into the forward 50 his opponent will be too stuffed to keep up with him.

Play him wherever needed but he should have a rule to only try speckies in the goalsquare. He took his first one in about 3 years last night, but usually misses and knocks 2-3 of our own guys out on the wing and the other team then streams into goal. Even last night he took out Hentschell.

Did play a blinder though, lets hope it doesn't get to his head and he starts trying to be Andrew McLeod again. Keep it simple Brett, thats when your'e at your best.

LOL spot on. I love Brett Burton. His enthousiasm and determination is always there. He gives 100% each week. Yes, he makes the odd mistake, but I can forgive him for that. He needs to just do what comes naturally, rather than the flashy stuff, thats when he gets himself in trouble. :D

There are 2 reasons why Burton has played across HFF in NAB Cup

1 - To give youngsters such as Knights, Jericho, VB and others a run on the wing
2 - Because Scott Welsh is out injured.

Quite simply, Welsh, Burton, Perrie, Hetnschel and McGregor just CANNOT exist in one forward line together. Thats just VERY unbalanced forward line.

Now when the real stuff starts, expect Burton to be played on his wing again with occasional stint in the forward line to throw off the opposison. His role now will not be what he regularly plays during the season proper.

For all those people that love to bash him, they just don't realise how much of a night mare Birdman is to match up on. It takes a unique sort of player to match up on Burton.

One of the reasons that Port won so many showdowns in a row against us. They had a perfect match up for Birdman. Montgomery is one player that matched up on Burton to perfection. He is strong in the air and can go with him at ground level.

Noddy I think that's what happens now of a wing.....he gets back into defence to help Rutten and Bock and then a minute later he's in the forward line taking a mark.

Very few players in the AFL can keep the stamina going to play on him......are you going to sacrifice your midfield rotations off the bench to rotate guys on Burton....interesting coaching dilema

yes definately a wingman...his best attribute is his engine - so we've got to use it.

Burton will play mostly on a wing (as will Mattner), but I expect Craig may rest him for periods up forward to give the likes of Knights a run on the wing too. We need to make the most out of our midfield rotations this year, to give the younger players more minutes.

Very impressive (apart from the brain explosion in decking Pickett late) I never really rated this guy highly but he's got a lot of fitness and is a difficult matchup when he goes forward breifly.

You guys were so fit last night though, your coach is doing a bloody good job having your team so fit.

I had no issue with him giving the 50m penalty away as it was Byron! Probably should have crunched him harder if anything. ;)

that was pretty much my comment although Melbourne scored 10points within about 2 mins of that incident..

I reckon any time Byron is in your sights you milk it for all it's worth

Yeah, the commentators were saying that it was undisciplined and all that, but I was glad he did it and am willing to bet if it wasn't Byron he wouldn't have done it.

Should have really crunched the sniping bastard for old times sake. :D

Doesn't matter, Pickett managed to humiliate himself by turning out in a fat lazy fashion and getting an absolute football lesson.

Better to leave the loser on the ground for our sakes. :p

Agree with Kane and Stiffy - the comment in our area was that the 50m was totally justified :D

Anyone else pick his little kick to rutten (I think) off the ground in the third qtr with two melbourne players around them. The commentators said that it was a lucky kick but he meant to do that as it was right in front of us, sometimes he amazes me with his quick thinking - it's when he has too much time to think that he has trouble....

Burton as a forward certainly wouldnt hurt the crows. Hes one of only four players in crows history to have kicked over 50 goals in a season.

We need to use him wherever he will hurt the opposition.

I think with the style of game we play (players running hard both ways) rotations will mean he will spend some of his time on the HFF or even at FF one out.

He will also spend considerable time on the wing.

We now have the depth to be able to do this.

It will make it harder for other sides to compete with us and make it more difficult for the Crows to be shut down for a game. We have many more options available to us.:thumbsu:

IMO he is much more suited to the forward line. We have plenty of running midfielders, especially with the vast improvement of Reilly, so he doesn't need to spend as much time in the middle now. He is a very effective forward, he's been our leading goal kicker in the past, and I think it's time to use him predominantly as a forward once again.

Well I think Burton SHOULD be in the forward line... on the flank. He will always give you a contest up forward... whether he takes the specky mark or knocks it down for the crumbers to do their stuff. I thought he crumbed well to Perrie last night too. My theory as to why he doesn't take the specky mark any more is because he's too knackered from all the running on the wing - by the time he tries to take the mark he is off balance because he's stuffed. Yes we know he CAN run all day, but I am not sure that's where he does us the most good. He is ALWAYS dangerous in the forward line.

I think having a forward team consisting of Burton, McGregor, Jericho (or Thompson), Welsh, Perrie, and Hentschel is incredibly powerful. Look what happened last night - they shut Hentschel down (he's been our most dangerous forward) by smothering him with two and three opponents. What happens? Burton, Perrie and Jericho pop up. You can't stop all of them can you?

We have sadly missed a forward structure and a game plan to assist our many entries into the forward 50, but having watched this structure I am convinced this is the way to go. We have an AWESOME defence, and now we'll have an attack to match.

Haha i thought that was sensational.
Probably the highlight of Pickett's night.
