Didn't we sign Michael Pettigrew to a 3 year contract after a bad year?

Re: End of 2011 list management

And even now, isn't Michael Pettigrew still two years younger than Ebert?

Brett is just shy of turning 28. How many good years do you think he might even be capable of at best, keeping in mind that he is a small marking forward with dodgy agility?

Not to mention that this year should have been ideal for him, as his worst years have been when he's had to share the forward line with tall key forwards, one of whom we are debuting this week and want to develop in the role!

Re: End of 2011 list management

Brett also apparently had one month of preseason.

I just can't believe the disrespect people show some of our players, while at the same time they can't get enough of a guy like Trengove who has done almost nothing all year.

Ebert was our best forward last year before he got injured, I'm willing to give him the excuse of a short preseason for his relatively bad form this year. (which does include a couple of decent games)

I'm not saying we NEED to re-sign him, but I would be very shocked if we delist him.

EDIT: @waspy I just meant that one year doesn't mean everything that's all...

Re: End of 2011 list management

I wouldn't advocate delisting him, but if it is any more than a one year contract it's yet another list management mistake.

Guys i think you need to remeber Port's draw card for Brad to come here is that Brett plays here...

I hope that is one of the main reasons we're signing him

Re: End of 2011 list management

Couldn't care less about a draw card for Brad. Is Port Adelaide not enough?

I would hope his interest is in playing for the best Port Adelaide side, not just one with his cousin in it - if not, we don't need him. Read the creed.

Trade Brett to West Coast if its all about making happy families, they can go back to the Phinals Phil Matera forward setup and waste a few good years.

I think Brett is fortunate to be getting a new contract. The talent is there, hopefully a big pre-season will get him back into some form. This news probably means that Daniel Motlop is as good as gone.

How about nine?

If you look at his career long form, which is more common? A year in which he has been a vital part of the side, or a year in which he has definitely not? Which is more likely for a 28 year old?

And at his best, is he going to be playing a position of specific use to our club, or is he going to be part of a continuingly ineffective forward structure?

Re: End of 2011 list management

One year offer surely the only option that makes any sense, in effect we'd be "timing" a draft pick to use or on-trade for 2012 (if I understand the draft right, a 1st year draftee gets 2 years). Keeping him as an added attraction for the potential "other Ebert" trade, yes that would be cringeworthy. Sort of thing I associate with Choco, rightly or wrongly.

Look Ebo has no trade value this year after missing most of the pre season recovering from the knee injury. If he goes OK next year then he's in a similar spot to Daniel Motlop and dare I say it Chad this year - reclaims his standing in the football world after a tough few years but, hey, it's time for someone else. And if he did go somewhere as a small forward age 29 after next year, there's even less chance of it biting us in the bum.

Lurk3r it's very easy for someone to seem disrespectful to a player in a one line response even if it was meant like "it's not personal, it's just business". For example, your comment on Trengove. Pretty much indefensible. Porthos at least backed up his initial reaction to the Ebo news (not that I agree with him either here).

Now that I've started an argument with everyone, it's time to get back to work... :p

He had better be having the pre-season from hell. No time off for you Brett, you need to build a tank fast.

I think a Kingsley type ultimatum with a contract at the end if he built his tank may have been the way to go here. Then again look at Lean Davis this year, there is still hope for Brett.

Re: End of 2011 list management

Except that there is no upside, and trying someone that at least has the physical capability/years ahead of them to fit into a successful structure has at least some upside.

Recontracting Ebert falls into the category of `making bad decisions because at least they're not worse decisions'.

Think Brett needs to give up the grog, seems everyone I meet has seen him out on the town smashed - no wonder he can't play midfield.

For christ sake.

If one more person says 'omgf it iz good as we gets bradlez!' I will go beserk.

Have any of you who post this rubbish, ever seen Brad play? Ever? Ever? Ever?

He is a spud spud spud. He has improved a heap this year ONLY because West Coast are not horrible. We are horrible, Brad would go back to his spudish ways with us.

The only reason people want Brad is because he has a nice last name and for some reason people seem to think we can build a club around the fact that we have a couple of Eberts playing for us.

God dammit.

I dont think the creed has any meaning at AFL level Porthos

I just hope we aren't paying brett much seeing that the 8% we can now use of the salary cap should be used for trengove/Carlile or someone like Day/ Brad Ebert

Sure, why not?

It does when you're talking about rehiring someone's cousin to get them to maybe possibly work for you. Clubs without a creed would see that as ridiculous business practice; I mention the creed because it agrees on football grounds as well.

I just hope we aren't paying brett much seeing that the 8% we can now use of the salary cap should be used for trengove/Carlile or someone like Day/ Brad Ebert
Or more usefully for front-loaded long term contracts for guys like Boak and Hartlett.
