Almost every season, diligent coaches make changes to their game plan based on eliminating their shortcomings from the previous season(s) as well as incorporating useful aspects from sides that would have succeeded that year (in this case Swans, Eagles, Crows...). There is no shame in doing that and admitting it. Instead, it is shameful for any coach to stick to a game plan that has not delivered results. In Mark's case I think he is modifying his playing script from a poor season (by Port's standards, I think 10 other sides would have loved to finish 6th) so that we improve this season. What's wrong with that?

Absolutely nothing - that's how it should be.

Ayres was a good case of a coach that believed he was always right and there was virtually nothing to change - ultimately to the detriment of both himself and Adelaide.

Last year Choco could have probably been accused of sticking to what had worked in the past - but ultimately didn't last year.

Actually I think he's right on the money in the areas he's addressing. From a Port perspective, I like what I hear and read. If he sticks to these changes, after a little initial pain Port will probably be right up there again, and quicker than most expected.

I have been saying for a while now that our best chance to win a premiership over the next three years will probably be this year.
I will not go into major details for my reasoning on here like I have done on the Port board a few times, but no I am not saying we should be one of the favorites.
Suffice to say that if our youngsters do not show the goods this year then we are in deep poo for the next few. If they do show the goods, and they only need to come up to an average AFL level at this stage, we have enough top line players around them to be able to run with it.
Here's hoping.

By all accounts Brett was in Ports best today...so thats a good sign in a side that lacked leadership:eek:

Got a run on the ball and did pretty well.

My only criticism, which I'd aim at the whole Port team, is that he didn't win enough hard contested ball.

Hey spice18 the point wasnt making small changes which you're alluding to. Ofcourse coaches tinker with their style, but almost all have a basic plan they stick to. For example pagan has a long kicking style while, crows have run off half-back etc. For mark to signal major changes 5-6 yrs into his AFL coaching career would be an admission that his extremely flawed game plan in the past was a mistake, it was only the talent and depth in the list that made up for it. As it turns out mark didn’t really have a new plan up the sleeve and it is basically a very poor replica of NC's plan. Not totally unexpected as he isnt exactly the visionary type when its comes to these new ideas. Looking forward to season ’06.

haha, ayres was an example of having NO game plan. Well atleast when it came to combat flooding anyway.

You could also chuck in complete absence of skill or decision making.

Their second half was abysmal.

The only positive was Damon White's impersonation of a young Ian Perrie. Absolutely bang on.
