Brett Ratten has won the St Kilda coaching job.

The former Carlton coach becomes the third man to go from caretaker to full-time coach this season, joining North Melbourne’s Rhyce Shaw and Carlton’s David Teague.

Ratten won the race ahead of two Collingwood assistants, Saints great Robert Harvey and Justin Longmuir, who is one of the two main contenders for the vacant Fremantle job.

Seven’s Tom Browne reported the Saints’ coaching subcommittee formed its recommendation for Ratten to be the next coach within the past 24 hours.

The club board was ratifying the decision on Thursday evening and Ratten looks likely to be officially announced as the new coach as soon as Friday morning.

Ratten took over after the sacking of Alan Richardson with six rounds to go this season, leading the Saints to three wins and three losses as interim boss.

He coached Carlton for five full seasons from 2008 to 2012, as well as six games in 2007.

Statistically best performed clearance player ever (99)

04-05: Assistant coach Melbourne
06: Senior coach Norwood

08-12: Senior coach Carlton (60-1-59 & finals 3 of 5 years)
13-17: Assistant coach Hawthorn (3 x premierships)
18-19: Assistant coach St.Kilda

Most importantly for me: he emphasises skill and not effort. At this time, clearly the right man for us!

I will just say, Tommy boy becoming the new purple a bit after stating he was parked in a car basically on a stakeout "just to see who showed up".

Otherwise known as being a bit stalkery, so would not be surprised at all if his faceprint in on a window somewhere at the joint already.
Time for some CSI?

The seamless transition is important.

Ratts has been there for a year so he knows the players he wants in his team for 2020 and beyond. No wasted time with a new coach finding his feet. He's acted as if he was the coach since we beat the Bulldogs and Melbourne whether it was official or not.

Congratulations Brett.

Also the guy who was first to go with the "Scott a certainty to coach the saints" story immediately after Richo was sacked.
Good one Tom 👍
