I think a lot of people have also felt he's too much of a "players" coach, really buddy buddy with them etc and visibly shows he barracks for his side with every goal that's kicked.

I'm not so sure it's a bad thing though, the players appear to really like him and really go about performing their roles.

The difference between Ratts and his coaching contemporaries Hird, Buckley and Voss is that he spent a few years away from Carlton first coaching Norwood in the EFL then an assistant at Melbourne.

Think Vossy and Buckley should have coached elsewhere for a few years, and Hird has Mark Thompson and an excellent staff supporting him...

I've been a harsh critic of Ratten in the past, but clearly he is moulding the team in his image.

We were total gash when Ratts took over, and he handled the Fevola debacle and trade with aplomb.

He is doing everything required of him by the board, now he'd have to be one of the safest coaches in the league, and rightly so.

The players love him and I think he certainly has the personality to be a good coach.

Is also fortunate that he is surrounded by so many good tactical assistants who provide him with a heap of input on game day.

Jury still out.

Bolded and that's it. Ridiculous to think that every sport is more tactical than footy.

Coach has very little control once the ball hits the turf? Not sure if serious?
I hate the way saying anything is remotely superior in another sport, especially soccer is frowned upon. Soccer is way more tactically involved than footy is, it doesn't mean the game is better. There is far more diversity in Soccer tactics mainly because of the optional positions and the fact that the ball is never not in the possession of one of the teams. The offside rule also makes creating space on the smaller pitch more difficult. I think it's just a factor of goals being harder to score in soccer so tactics are more important.

Almost every team in the AFL will line up with 6 at the back, 3 across the centre, 3 on the ball and 6 up front and play a forward press. The only common change is if a side play a spare man back.

Not sure I rate him tbh. Has a good list and a good coaching panel around him. And support from the board.[/QUTE]

has a good list because he has developed it. Is continually growing as a coach and has.shown more than enough to silence the doubters.

No doubt the talent identification has been top notch. All those top ten draft selections had to pay off eventually.

I always thought he was just a fill in coach to be honest. I do not think he was ready to be coach when he started. If he gets a flag as his time as coach then he has done his job.
Yeah pretty much agree with this.

He was raw in the early days and had most of us wondering what he was trying to achieve with game plan and strategies. It came to a point where I thought that there were two options, either replace him or get him some (better) help. The addition of Richardson, Brown and his natural improvement has done wonders for this team.

They call him a players coach and I really like the structure of what happens on the sidelines and what is fed to him from upstairs.

Show me the 5 years Ratten tanked? Because this is his 6th year in the job and I seem to recall from his 2nd full year in charge we made the finals and have done ever since despite losing our only Key forward at the time.

Many of the clubs best and most consistent players, Jamison, Heath Scotland, Mitch Robinson, Eddie Betts, Garlett were not top ten draft picks.

Get a clue, we've probably had more success with the rookie draft then any other club in the last 5 years,
I look at a player like Dennis Armfield as a Ratten success story, many other coaches would have given up on him (many Blues fans certainly did) but Ratts kept the faith and now he's one of our unsung heroes (he was terrific last night)

Ratten is getting great production from our bottom 6 players, that proves he's a decent coach IMHO.

Many were.

Scotland fell into your laps because Port Adelaide were too stupid to accept him. As did Nick Stevens in the same failed trade. I'd love to see Scotland win a flag just so I can say "Chokko Williams you were wrong!!!!".

Ratten has an undeniably good record as a list builder and player developer. Does that make him a good coach? Maybe.

I dont think we will ever know if Ratten is a good coach or just an effective role player in a well oiled machine. Probably doesnt matter. Blues are heading in the right direction regardless.

But its undeniable that Carltons tanking is starting to pay dividends.

I would have thought developing good ordinary players into consistent performers like Armfield is the hallmarks of a good coach ?

His win-loss ratio has also improved each season he's been at the club.

Seems to me that even if he wins a flag or two as coach, Ratten will never get the credit he deserves from people like you ..

Think this sums up the thoughts of many Carlton people I know. Maybe cos he started as interim coach.

Also think it's a bit of a cultural thing, Carlton supporters like to think they're big hitters who land the big names and that it was only ever a matter of time before that happened with the head coach.

In terms of this thread I'm not at all saying he is a master coach as some have mentioned, just the respect and any kudos has been very, very slow to come and I now just think he was given a bit more in line with how his group is performing.

Everyone wrote Bomber Thompson off too before he won two premierships, media are moron's, it's the clubs that ignore it that become successful & it's looking like Carlton are gonna be one of them shortly.

It's hard to respect a man who starts his career with a year of blatant tanking.

I think that might have something to do with it, regardless of where Carlton are now or what they achieve this year, Ratts still has to work his way up from a very low point.

Please explain what you mean by "he just looks like an absolute idiot." Are you a child? For god's sake, are you that shallow that you judge a person by their appearance? Jack Dyer, Kevin Bartlett were some of the uglier footballers to ever pull on a boot, but they could play football. Tony Jewell; what did he look like?

I'm sorry, but this is probably the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen on BF & that is saying something. The quality of posting on BF has plummeted to a new low.

Settle down, cobber. What he's saying is right - Ratten looks like Alfred E. Newman and when people look stupid, they get judged. This is fact.

If you weren't so precious you'd realise your post was the ridiculous overreaction and the other guy was making a fair point.

Another one. School holidays. I guess you wouldn't expect anything else.
