I think he oversaw some pretty tough, lean years within a club used to and expecting success, rolled with the punches, was clear in his vision and deserves whatever success comes his way from here on in.

I do think that for whatever reason, he has been harshly judged, but that's probably a combination of the footy world expecting a usually successful club to get back up the ladder, combined with the coaching merry-go-round that dictates the weakest current link must go. Just to fill pages in the paper. In fact it's what happened to Worsfold even after winning a flag. And look at him now - flying. It's meaningless crap. Malthouse took a good ten years before he delivered a flag at one of the most professional clubs ever, and he'll be remembered by most as a top line coach. I don't think he underachieved at all - coaches need time, especially if they have to build a team from scratch (in Micks' case, twice).

Good for him that it's all clicking now, and I think Ratten deserves it :thumbsu:

Exactly. No one's ever been judged on their appearance, ever, anywhere.

What a baby.

So your juding someone by the way they look ....

Are you serious,

That is so stupid it;s funny

Don;t forget Henderson, thanks to the oil painting, Voss

Ratten has built this side, which is now showing signs of real success, this team has Ratten stamped all over it, team first, tough, gutsy. passionate, some people are either jealous or having trouble accepting it, exactly what the op is saying.

Ratten has a unique style - he's open (with the media and players) and I think this puts a lot of people 'off' him. We still expect coaches to be hard asses ripping shreds of the playing group to motivate them. Ratts goes about it in a different manner.

And you can say what you like, but it works.

In respect to coaching moves and team structure, hes been instrumental in the following:

1) Reinventing Yarran and Henderson as defenders. In particular, a lot of eyebrows were raised with Yarrans move to the backline (including this poster) but it proved a masterstroke.
2) Implementing a game plan whereby every player is multi-role. Carlton (when he took over) were very one dimensional - kick it to Fev was the basic gameplan. He's changed that with greater versatility required of every player across the board.
3) Back when we were copping regular shellackings, he was big on possession footy - Carlton were constantly golding the ball aloft, and retaining possession to stop opposition surges. You'll note that this tactic has reduced as our attacking game has improved.
4) The continued improvement of our backline. Has gone from strength to strength from year to year.
5) A simple yet effective game plan that relies upon fast transitional play, and winning contested footy.
6) Overseeing the departure of Fevola, and the implementation of a completely new (and more effective) forward line in his absence.
7) Development of our second tier players - forget the high draft picks - Im more talking about blokes like Robinson, Armfield, Touhy and Thornton.

He's shown that he's not afraid to make big calls either. Last week for example he had no fear about starting Henderson on Cloke, and playing Jamison as a forward for extended periods.

Im still not sold on him coaching from the sidelines, but it seems to work - If you get to a game you can see him talking to the players one on one the moment they come off for an interchange.

He's the most unfairly judged coach in the AFL IMO (even by Carlton people).

To be honest, I wasnt sold on him until last year but he has my backing now 100%.

Will prove a lot of people very wrong come the end of his tenure as coach.

I can see the point and for what it's worth, don't think Ratten looks stupid at all.

He appears to be a battler, a worker, and doesn't have the commanding aura of say a Leigh Matthews or Mick Malthouse. Like if he were a teacher, you'd assume he'd be a Tech teacher and not the principal.

Maybe some of it might be because of his playing career, a no-nonsense in and under hard worker. Maybe it's just the same immeasurable thing called charisma that makes someone listen to Bill Clinton for 3 hours, but turn the TV off as soon as John Howard is on it.

It's not fair, and it's not right. But the great unwashed barely bother reading past a headline, and often, don't look past someones' appearance, and it's possible that idiots judge him accordingly.

Shallow, superficial, people are all of that, and perception is everything. But to me it's about actual output. Some people, because of shallow perceptions from others, need to work extra hard to convince the world that they are capable.

Tanked for half a decade and threw buckets of money at Judd. Not sure Ratten is a master coach.

I never thought i would ever see the day when a saints supporter came out calling other teams tankers

The saints defined the art of tanking ..but unfortuately they just stuffed up their draft selections time and time again.

Ratten is a good young coach that has the players hearts and minds..it's a good combination .

Another one. School holidays. I guess you wouldn't expect anything else.

Seriously, if you had half a brain you'd realise what was said wasn't a pot shot at Ratten. Just an opinion based on what people think. Stop flicking your bean for 5 minutes and read the post before going troppo.
