Early doors .....

Don't know about you but ive been waiting 12 years to see this team - I'm not waiting any more - its one thing to be cautious, but conservative ??!!! Leave that for the coaches.

We still haven't beaten Hawthorn since 2005. I think we all agree that the Hawks will be up there in September, so our match with them looms as crucial to our fortunes.

West Coast is another strong side, I think we are stronger overall than them, but I don't want to underestimate them either.

Perhaps we will learn something on Saturday night.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Firstly agree totally about Hawthorn.... However playing them at the MCG this year for the first time in quite a while - I think that will improve our chances as it does against Geelong. I also agree on the West Coast point.... I think we're a better side to them as well but like all the top five prospects (Collingwood Included) you can't underestimate anyone!

In relation to Brett Ratten - I liken him to a Harry Redknapp / Jose Mourinho.... Fantastic Man Manager - On more the one occasion over the last 18 months players have come out backing him when they didn't need to. He has the list on side and I think that will go a long way if we're going to be a challenger.... And like both Jose and Harry he has fantastic back room staff as well!

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Guys I usually take a stab at who plays in the big one end of year around this time, usually pick the losing teams lol
It would be poetic justice to play the eagles and judd wins best afield honours, thus showing we got the better deal in the trade off lmao
Then again poetic justice for ratts to stop the cats as he won best and fairest in 1995 and now wins coach of the year award in 2012 lmao
Then I would personall love it to be the hawks, the blues are a beter team, will beat the hawks no doubt.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1987 premiership what better way to stick it to the arrogant pig alastair clarkson who stopped fev notching his 100th goal 4 years back, then by beating his team when it counts most, espeially to the team he resents most of all.
The blues
I think it will be the hawks, the cats and pies are slowing down and injuries are geting to them.
The eagles loss of lecras will sting them later in the year

Hi Guys

I am so happy to be here. I respect and love all our Carlton men.

Long time reader, first time poster. Yay!

So what ?

Carlton are playing the best brand of football I have ever seen, and we totally SMASHED THE PIES.

I do not expect to go all year without losing a game - so either the pies or cats will beat us - maybe others. That has nothing to do with keeping a lid on it or "Early Doors" - what is that anyway - "Waiting for the Sun" ?

What I am seeing is pretty bloody exciting and definitely warrants exactly the level of hype and enthusiasm. No one is saying are we better than Brisbane triple premiers, or Geelong - people are saying we are genuine contenders - and we are.

If we beat Hawks and Cats - what then ? We would be unbeatable absolute dead set certs for the flag and then what ? A mild clap with the thumb nails ?

Get excited brother - its about passion, its about getting on it when its good. Next week we might have been smashed by the bombers and I will be on here eating humble pie .....which we have plenty of, because we just beat my by TEN GOD DAM GOALS !!!

Re: Respect for brett ratten

The SEN boys were just taking the piss out of Ratts talking up the Scum in his press conference. It was very funny. :D

Have been to blame for the run against the hawks, In 2006 we were botoming out that year, in 2007 we went in favourites, they were missing mitchell and franklin and got caned to the tune of 100 points
2009 fevs poster seconds before the siren, last year they were running out of legs
We can beat the hawks no doubt, as for geelong, unlucky not to have beat them last year

Re: Respect for brett ratten

The dark old days were horrible, 2 time premiership coach, a rudderless ship, smashed all over the place on and off the field.

And he took on the job no-one wanted.

Voss, and someone else whose name eludes me, passed.

The bloke that couldn't coach now has a top 2 side.

He's doing ok Ratts. :thumbsu:

Let's see how he handles the post game interview.
He needs to be brutal after today's rubbish

I have no doubt he will be bitterly disappointed with the effort today. He may not give a Mark Neeld, circa Round 1 performance, but behind closed doors there will be some home truths told.

The worst thing we can do is throw out the baby with the bathwater, but as I posted in the Gameday thread, it is time to pull back from the media exposure & focus on playing good football. Any talk of premiership favouritism, ability to cope with the hype etc should be short circuited.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Defies belief we continued to press up all day... Get up in the box and he could see what everyone in the ground could see

We have the best list in the afl top 2 at a min

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Have been critical in the past, and was starting to doubt my resolve with an impressive start to the season.
Was amazed today, except poor old Hendo who was the constant down back all day, the boys just kept rotating, Bower, Jammo, Yarran etc up forward, even Duigan and Laidler. WTF Ratts. Defence is a team exercise.
We know you want "flexibility" but this is ridiculous. In rounds 1-3, Bett, Garlett, Army, in fact 1/2 the team rotated through the middle. You did not have the confidence to share the load with a soldier down and a couple playing hurt. Curnow was hardly seen in the middle despite being the "grunt" man previously.
My doubts have returned.

Ratts was flying up until today - I seriously think he has some sort of rabbit in the head lights problem when playing Essendon - he might be over thinking it. Either way you can not deny part of the problem lies with the coaching box.

Not just Ratts. We eff it up so many times against this mob. Still, better now than later. Last years early season draw was a wake up call also.

We've lost 1 of our last 5 encounters against Essendon. Hardly a "rabbit in the head lights problem when playing Essendon."

Re: Respect for brett ratten

so our first loss for the year and the headhunters are out for Ratts
No bookie was willing to take my hard earned money on this one
wonder why

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Unfair to go after Ratten because we lost yesterday and I still think we are on track for top 4.

But why did it take until the 4th quarter to get Gibbs into the midfield?

WHY did it take until the 4th quarter to get Gibbs into the midfield??

This question needs to be asked and answered...

He was wasted at half back because the game was won and lost around the clearances...

He goes into the middle and we get 3 clearances in a row...

Wake up Ratten and push him in the middle and then push him forward... FFS

Interesting comments from Murphy on Channel 7 gameday show stating that its hard for the players on the ground to pick up that Essendon had their loose player around the stoppages whilst we had ours across half back.

Murph was indicating that the players rely on the coaching staff to filter that information down to them. Either our staff didn't realise until it was way too late or decided to not counter this tactic from Essendon.

Makes it hard on your midfield group when the opposition have an extra player at stoppages which basically guarantee's them a clearance or contested possesion as well have an extra man to pressure and tackle us if we do in fact get our hands on the ball first.

Teams employ this tactic against us often to block the likes of Judd and Murphy, we need to change our mindset to get the games on our terms and allow these 2 superstars an opportunity to compete 1 on 1.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Simple facts

If you win the clearances and go forward your attack looks great
If you lose the clearance but stop them short and then win the next - see above. Ratten has a lot of confidence in the mid field - emphasis on ruckmen winning taps to advantage and quick ball out to spreads

Against Esendon - the midfield structures collapsed why?

1. Ruckmen got belted ( inexplicable)
2. No stopping ( Carrazzzo gone Curnow injured extra Essendon man )
3. Tiredness - no raotation ability due to injury

Stuff that troubles me

We went in light on in defense. Jamison and Duigan didnt seem to be match fit - exposed as Essendon crushed in Q2. Laidler played on one leg and Yarron obviously had problems himself. Leaving Henderson ( what a great job he does week in week out) dependant on Bower as support ( stopped laughing yet?)

I think we thought the game was going to be a 'easy' enough to use as match practise for Jamison/Duigan - Laidlers injury in the first minute changed that and Yarron later capped the disaster.

Positional changes

Dont no wether thsi was a silly change for change sake idea OR ( more likely) we have to 'rest' these guys - push them forward...either way it was ridiculous to see Jamison and Laidler and Bower pretending to be forwards.

Attack

The boys couldn't kick straight when it mattered and ex Walker - it has become obvious that Waite/Gartlett are no certain kicks in front of goal 35+ meters out. thats what Walker provides - a straight kick and confidence about that area of ground. Around goals - Waite was excellent in contesting high ball and tapping to Betts advantage.

Ruck

Did we have any ruckmen playing against Essendon - I mean seriously did we?

How much of this was a terribel injury toll on teh day and how much was ordinary coaching - I'd suggest the former. but defence remains teh biggest question mark - underliend by a one fact- we dont have a tall or body large enough - taller than or equal in height to some of our competitors.

Wasted because of this

1. Henderson doing a masterful job in defence - what does that say about our hiring policy in this area - sacrificing a natural forward.
2. Gibbs - having to play sweeper role and clean up too much - not being developed as a midfield general ( Judd wont be around forever)
