I dont have an issue with stating your goals. We finished just outside the top 4 last year by less than a goal, with 3 or 4 of our better players out (Kruze, Gibbs, Waite, Hammer). So we fell short by a whisker, obvious next step was alway a top 4 finish. So not silly at all. What was your expectation? If you finish 5th then surely your next goal is 4th or better. Why do you think its silly to articulate your goals? Surely if you want to measure your progress you want the yardstick by which you will be measured to be well known by all?

Top 4 was the aim yes naturally, but is there any need to bring on the hype about it for no real reason. Nothing wrong with the one week at a time crap to the media. I'll take more action over words thanks.

Lots of posts calling for Ratts' head, very few - if any - telling how a new coach will take us forward, how long will that take, & who that new coach will be.

Not saying that Ratts' should stay on beyond year's end if things don't get better, but sacking a coach with no replacement strategy is Dumb.

a couple of ways

1. new coach will fire up players to perform as there wont be any given walk up starts. apart from a couple, murphy, judd and laidler pre injury.
2. Should be swift turn around as talent is there.
3. Players may be reinvented by playing in other positions
4. Intel from other club/s may add to game plan, help counteract the way teams play us. even from just all the interviews.
5. board wont have sentimental attachment to coach, therefor there is no perceived or actual "boys club".

Perhaps another way of putting it is, who is that new coach? who is the person capable of firing up the players, turning the club around? How long will that take?

There's been a lot of AFL coaches, very few have gone on to win premierships.

That person has to be capable of inventing a game plan that is better than what 17 other coaches are trying to do, and have a list that bats deeper than 17 other teams. It ain't easy.

And what role do the players play? I'm not seeing much out of the players at the moment, they're highly paid professionals - should we be wrapping them in cotton wool for someone to enliven them, or should they be self-motivated like every other employee is meant to be?

Some of Ratts' moves are pretty odd, ie. keeps wanting to try Bower up forward & AJ back. It's never worked. But we are a top 8 side & have been for 3 years. Obviously he can coach, the question is who can coach better that we can get?

Like this post. Anyone can argue that Ratten doesn't deserve to be sacked, because there is justification in honoring his current contract. We have improved gradually (extremely gradual) under his reign up until this season, and he does seem to have an excellent relationship with the players.

To me though, there are obvious benefits in bringing in a new coach some of which have been outlined by Crizis. Geelong and Adelaide have proven the last 2 years that bringing in a new coach can have a profound effect on a playing group, provided you get the right man.

If the rot continues, our board should Make a wish list and try to get the man at the top of that list. If they can't land the man they want (Roos, Malthouse) maybe they need to persist with Ratten.

You can't use history as a basis to determine what will happen in the future unless it's obvious. It isn't obvious that we will do a Geelong and win the flag next year, there are just so many factors that have to go right for that to happen.

I don't know where this comparison comes from but we are not Geelong of 2006 and Ratten is not Mark Thompson. Only the deluded people would truly believe that this year is the calm before the storm and we'll win the flag next year because we stick with Ratten.

We have a bunch of outside players that aren't willing to put their head over the ball. The cats did not have this problem. Instead they had a plethora of strong bodied midfielders that were all very capable of winning the ball with chapman, bartell, ablett, corey, kelly etc. They then set the tone with Stevie J by making him earn his way back into the side, this is something I guarantee Ratts will not do. Granted Stevie had the off field problems and our players don't atm but my point is Ratts will not make the tough decision on the "automatically selected" players.

Let's not forget they also picked up Joel Selwood in the 2007 draft and he certainly Contributed to their excellent turn around. It's quite unlikely that we'll pick up a player of that calibre in this year's draft they don't grow on trees.

For us to win the flag Gibbs and Lucas need to suddenly become brave players and add to our midfield depth because even though ellard and McLean try extremely hard we have to face the facts that they lack the class required to become elite mids of the comp. Gibbs and Lucas have the damaging skills but have no interest in busting their arse to win.

We will also need our entire best back line to remain on the park and work as a cohesive unit. Jamison, Henderson, Laidler, Yarran and I reckon after another pre season Bootsma could earn a spot next year and we'd either need to use Touhy back there (even though I'd like to see him get a shot in the middle)
or we draft a decent small defender because the really fast small forwards have really troubled us.

Then there's the issue of sorting our forward line out. Hopefully Mitchell can play this year a few times and get a taste for it and come along next year because relying on Waite at age 30 is not going to be ideal given how inconsistent he has been and also how injury prone he has become. Garlett will also have to learn how to gut run and give it his all because he hasn't been doing that for the past month. Walker also has to eliminate his selfish performances and get back to his best.

Then we will also need to pick up a tough as nails ball magnet mid with decent foot skills, pace and footy smarts.

is there any fact in the rumour about Malthouse taking over at carlton as head coach ?? i know kernahan has said its not true and denies the fact that anyone at carlton aproached malthouse.. Its just that the rumours are getting stronger and Mick did say a year out of coaching is a long time..

You know why the rumours might be getting stronger?

OUT: Ratten
IN: Roos

Otherwise keep Ratten, no-one else out there worth considering.

Roos appears to be the flavour of the month for those looking for the greener grass. .. The fact is he hates the club and can barely hide his vitriol whenever he gets a chance to talk about the club. .. It would be like putting Grant Thomas in charge. .. We'd have to pay him above the ledger even for Roos to consider putting his hatred to one side. ..

Malthouse is not much better but he appears a little less angry towards the club. .. I can only think the club snubbed he and/or Roos at some point because it cannot all be historic surely. ..

im guessing because of our losses lately. i can't see kernahan sacking Ratten tho but i am just wondering if there is a role at the club for Mick. He would be a valuable asset to have in the coaches box.

Been an advocate of this kind of thing for a while. .. a Director of coaching role would have worked great early on and might be something to look at in a review at years end. ..

The coaching panel at Carlton has taken on a shape where Ratts has shed some responsibility to some experienced assistance and it might not fit any more. ..

Ratten's in his 5th full season at he club, technically his 6th season considering he took over in 2007. I personally don't see the Bomber Thompson example as a valid point. It has nothing to do with Carlton or our current situation.

I get it now. Geelong held onto their coach after a poor season in 06 and then won a premiership in 07. Yay, that means all we have to is not sack Ratten and we'll win a premiership next year. Is that your point? I know Ratten hasn't done too much wrong the last few years but it doesn't mean we can't bring in someone better.

The main reason they didn't sack Thompson was because he at least took them within a couple of kicks of a Granny in 04.

Geelong rorted the draft with all of their father son picks and they kept Thompson because they could see what was about to happen. We are running out of time and we need to do something in the next three years. Ratten is not the guy for the job. Malthouse's credentials are impeccable. Great man manager, organizer and very shrewd tactician. You only have to listen to his comments on AW to see he knows what he is talking about. Roos is on 500K at Sydney and he does not want to coach anymore. Thompson will be a billionaire soon with all of his property deals and he has no interest in coaching. Not much else around so either move know or someone else will. Geelong will smash us on Friday based on our form the past few weeks.

I know my life is slipping away fast but hasn't Roos only been in the media 1.5 seasons?

Yes true five, retired 2010, so as some posters are wanting Roos, that would be say 2013, two years from coaching at AFL, too long out of the game maybe? The game changes so rapidly....and not sure if he is a good fit

I;m not in the camp of sack ratts for the record, just commenting on a previous poster

What do you think?

Still getting used to the new format so when I came back into this thread just now I actually read the first 2 pages before I came to the last page (which is what I originally wanted).

Back then (all of 8 weeks ago) the very worst post re Ratten at the time was "It's early doors".
Of course that was after we'd just beaten Collingwood.

Good result or bad the propensity for knee-jerk posting continues to astound me.

Its just that rumors, we are not looking the best at the moment. We have to wait for the next 5 weeks to see how it will shape up for the season. I expect us to match Geelong and possibly Win. The West Coast, Hawthorn and Collingwood are the games that may turn horrible. There might be a better Idea by that time we up to it or not.

They could see what was about to happen? They got flogged by 100 points twice and by 10 goals 3 times more and finished tenth after making the finals under Bomber for the past 3 seasons and as high as 4th in his first iianm. But they could see?

But actually you make my argument for me. They could see past the poor season that they were all progressing well and that a flag would ensue if they all stuck phat with each other. That takes a strong board and a lot of g&d.

Not unlike I would counter, the attitudes we are fostering. Ratts has a new contract, and Sticks and Swann have every intention of honouring it, even if we regress (in a similar way to Geelong in 06) before taking the final step. I dont think we will regress, I think our form is terrible and our injuries are debilitating but I think we can turn it all around and still make a genuine run at the flag this year.

I am heartened by the way Sticks slapped Eddie down and reiterated our resolve in the direction the club is headed.

Yep, nice article. Slapped Eddie down in the process. We will find a solution to our problems. He knows it. And his confidence ought to slap a few here down with him. Time some of you faced reality, the club has a coach it has faith in, they just gave him a 2 year contract extension. We are still on more wins than losses, 2 wins off top, in the 8. We would need to lose every game and finish in the bottom 4 for there to even be second thoughts. Aint gonna happen. We will finish in the 8 and Ratts will see out his current contract. I am not as confident as I was earlier in the year, but I still have faith in the current team from the boot-studder up to the Pres and nearly everyone in between.

Go baggers.

Yep, like being being flogged with wet lettuce. Honestly, what a circus.

whats everyone going to say if on Friday we get absolutely smashed?

That I'm glad I had to work and couldn't make the game*. .. Willalso be disappointed but less so then I was with last weeks scoreline. .. Wont be a meltdown though as I can see the wood for the trees. .. ;)

*currently spewing that I do have to work BTW as I think that wont be the case. ..

Looking at Doormat's and Setanta's new avatars, I am thinking I am going to have to upgrade for this new format! You would expect to be thrashed by the Catters the way we have been playing but I do not see them as players of congested football which may help us but on the other hand they have more A graders on the park than us
