Patience is not a 21st century virtue. Everyone is looking for the quick fix. Buy now pay later. Put off problems for others that follow to fix, its a sign of the times.

Hard work and acceptance of tried and proven formulas dont appease the simple minded. They want instant results. And would go into an ever rapid churn to achieve the illusion of it, then complain bitterly when the instantaneous success does not materialise.

You are debating with the embodiment of the now principle.

If we miss the 8 we all know he is gone as he should be.

Loads of first round draft picks
6 years in charge
Recruited Chris Judd
Relatively weak competition couldnt be a better year to win a flag. Hawks of 2011 should be our inspiration they were decimated by injuries yet found a way to win enough games to make top 4 and only missed a GF by a kick.

Patience to some is tolerating incompentence for to long for others. 6 years one final win would not be acceptable.

As opposed to us who were a kick away from a prelim against a team we rarely get beaten by at the MCG (Geelong) and go close at Etihad. .. Both us and to a lesser extent Hawks are under performing this year (a few weeks ago the Hawks were not any better than we are now). ..

Lets stop the excuses and see results boys!!!

Fire up lift your expectations 1 finals win is not enough lets see how the year unfolds.

In 3 weeks we should have a very solid line up again and as such should be well placed to make the 8 and then win and elimination final atleast. Nothing less is acceptable.

I agree, depending on what else happens between now and getting the key personnel back, I think we can make a charge on the 8 and put the scare into a few opponents in September. .. but that sneaky GF chance is kind of shot now. .. I'm willing to assess once September is over ;)

I suspect unless we can find a way to win 1 of our next 3, we will find it difficult to comeback to make the 8, as that would mean 3 wins from our last 11, and it will be a long way back from there.
Whilst it was much improved effort Friday night, Geelong are a far distance away from the team they were, and to be brutally honest the Carlton list has 3 key weaknesses, lack of a decent tall forward we will not progress until we find one as Waite can no longer be relyed upon, secondly another quality mid, Judd is starting to show signs of decline and our depth is a long way short of other teams, both Collingwood/West Coast have had many injuries with little impact to their performance.

Ratten & other coaches will not be exempt from review at year end, as finishing between 8-10th is not acceptable and anyone thinking otherwise and using injuries as the major reason are only deluding themselves.

Do not want. If we want to change coaches, then look elsewhere. Signing another experienced coach like we did with Pagan comes across as a short term and reactionary move. Bread for circuses to appease the fools we have in our ranks.

Please do not compare the Pagan era with anything that has gone before or will ever be. Please.

I'm all for a review at the end of the year if we don't see much improvement as players start returning from injury, but that review must include the playing list, because I'll be damned if the players should get off scot free for some of the performances we have seen this year.

Yep agree MS *thumbs up*

Melbourne finished 5th after the home and away rounds that year and were a pretty decent team. Ratts was highly rated for his work with the midfield and left specifically to be a head coach at whatever level.

....therefore after such a good year it follows that you go coach Norwood in the EDFL 2nd Division! If anything that hurt his career because he lost touch when he could have and should have been an assistant coach at some club for a further two years. No point arguing his pedigree as a coach....he was only meant to be an interim coach and they took it further because they could not or would not make the hard call.

If your business is going down the tubes do you see the year out before the review or start one immediately?

l think we need to make a informed decision on Ratten at year end, but again we should also not delude ourselves our list is ready even if all are fit, Waite's body is shot and Judd is now showing signs of decline, combined with the fact we have no tall forward options, neither of Hampson or Kruezer are any form of solution.

We need to start evalvating both our list & coaching staff over the next three months and make some tough decisions both from a list perspective and also coaching at year end as development/improvement this year has been sadly lacking in our playing list.

Good post and I fully agree. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions to move forward and this is the same for any professional organization or business.

Of course you review it. .. Don't you think they are reviewing things right now? What you don't do, is have a knee jerk reaction and sack the manager mid sale as that could be the wrong decision. ..

If Ratts is 'let go' at the end of the season (assuming a poor outcome results wise) I don't think it could be seen as a knee jerk reaction. His position has been in question for close to a year now. There are pro and anti Ratten camps at Visy Pk, it's a matter of who wins the argument.

I was responding to reviewing things immediately rather than waiting until the end of the year, re-read the post I quoted. ..

Look he has had a really challenging year. Injuries and other teams picking apart his game plan.

But despite this he hasn't developed the list and doesn't seem to be an innovator in game plan terms, so I wouldnt be devastated if they got rid of him for malthouse or Roos

Ok my two cents, Ratten will see out the year, and probably his contract as well, reason? The club is not ruthless like it use to be, where an average year saw you cleaning out your office quicker than a 2 dollar hooker goes down on a Saturday night, Ratts is a trier, nothing more, he isn't bold or daring in the way he goes about things on game day, Opposition coaches often out coach Ratts because Ratts is prepared to just let things roll on before making a change, and often when it's way to late in the heat of battle to make a difference, he is slowly changing his ways, but again, is this to late or has the damage already been done?

I'm just concerned sacking Ratts might have a detrimental effect on the playing group. The fragility of job security might just have them questioning their own vulnerabilities. Just a theory.

I can't see that happening mate. Usually a new coach has a positive impact and the players perform better because a. they know the miscroscope is on each and every one of them and b. those previously disenfranchised with the coach are bouyed by knowing the slates have been cleaned and everyone is on the same level with no favourites

I really don't see Ratten as the coach who will take us to the next level. Yes his win loss ratio is decent but he hasn't got us to a GF let alone a Prelim and now he's been exposed for lack of ;list development and being a one trick pony.

Walls' article was decent in some respects but what he didn';t mention was how Malthouse got Coll into 2 GFs with a pretty average list. And how Roos coulod bring in previously considered average players and turn them into very good players as they toed the line and fitted into good structures.

Ratten, in my view is a MOR coach. Not an innovator, not a great list developer, and doesn't have a game plan unique to him, one that has Ratten's FingerPrints written all over it.

This club hasn';t had a top coach since Parko !!

Rumour I have heard is the seocnd year on his deal has clauses on it and club can opt out quite easily. Maybe what is happening is with is new family he has costs up to his eye balls so club will give him the first year to help. But this is just a rumour.

My concern is the bigger picture. The club is too much a boys club. Can you really see Sticks sacking Ratten?? And McKay makes up the third part of the boys cloub triangle.

I don;t know if real change will transpire as a result of this. Fish rots at the head right.
