Allegedly approached by Demetriou for the North position, however I think the story is a beat-up as it is hardly a forward moving career choice.

What worries me more is that he could be poached by the NRL to replace David Gallop. They would be silly not to look at him. There are also plenty of precendents for sport swapping CEO's, eg Ben Buckley AFL->FFA, Malcolm Speed NBL->ICC->Golf Australia

Pretty sure he has said repeatedly that he isn't interested in moving anywhere else as he and his famiy are now settled in the area and outside of the club they are his major focus now so moving to Sydney seem's like a very very long shot

If this has any legs Demetriou must be sacked. It's not only encouragememt for a person to break a legally binding contract but intereference in a club's internal affairs.

Demetriou has agreed the approach was made but claims it was in jest. Not good enough.

AD won't be sacked.

If his rubbish handling of the Rendell/Mifsud affair wasn't enough for the comission to tap him on the shoulder then he's pretty safe.

TBH I'm not worried at all about NM, why would that be an attractive job for him? If he ever leaves us, I think it'll either be to be an AFL exec or headhunted for some sort of high payin corporate role outside of footy. Those roles would be well paid enough and interesting enough to tempt him away from here, I doubt NM would be.

Demetriou has categorically denied he approached Cook and said the conversation about him being CEO for Norf was at a dinner after three bottles of wine and was a joke. The whole thing is a beat up and as far as it is reported Cook is not leaving Geelong.

Link to SEN interview with Demetriou about it

"AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou was furious this morning the approach had been made public, claiming the question was asked as a joke."

That's not a denial. It's an acceptance the approach was made and an attempt to mitigate. Attempted joke or not it is unacceptable behaviour from the AFL CEO

Agree with PO insofar as I'm not concerned about Cookie leaving. But it should never have been suggested. I don't trust Demetriou.

First thing I thought when I heard about Gallop yesterday. Can't see him going anywhere right now but if Vlad ever loses his throne then Cook will be the one to replace him, which would be shit for us but good for the league.

At the time were the AFL responsible for trying to get him to GC as well?
Yes it is common knowledge the AFL approached Cook to head the GCS. That was an official formal offer. Not something said while pissed at a dinner party.

But cue the paranoid conspiracy theorists to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Correct. Demetriou has form in this regard.
I agree that Colin Carter should voice our club's displeasure at Demetriou and the AFL Commission on this matter.

think its a beat up based on a a bit of a piss take comment over some bevvys....

that said, big greek should know better and that perception is reality and that making such a gag would make it out eventually....

btw - Cookie just signed for another 3 years.... nothing to see here... move on AFL....

Go Catters

He re-signed last year for another 3 years,so he ain't going nowhere

Cricket Australia have tried before to get him and he said NO and why we he want to run that basketcase NRL for ?

Get out clauses where a real promotion is in the offing aren't uncommon - look at any assistant coach contract. Even without that the NRL would probably buy out the contract if they decided cook was their man. I have no more love for NRL than you, but they are the biggest sport in the biggest market and the NRL could use a CEO who has turned a basket case into a powerhouse. A serious offer to Cookie would be undeniably tempting. Cookie will leave us one day, hopefully to either run the AFL or retire happily knowing that the job was done, but he may leave for other reasons.

Another beat up story from Robbo.

I like how Andy D thinks it is a bit of a joke looking for a kangas CEO.

In all seriousness, Cook has stated a number of times that he stays until his current goals are completed re; Keystone and stadium upgrades.

North would be mad not to at least pose the question to David Gallop though. Excellent administrator.

There is no way the NRL would hire Cook as CEO.

They are so much of a boys club it is not funny and they would very easily cut their nose to spite their face.

Half the people in power up there do not even want the storm in the competition and would not be able to live with an afl person running their game.

Meh, why would he want to leave for a club like north?!

Fact of the matter is, they were probably halfway tanked and joked about it.

AD:"gee you have done a great job transforming the cats from an average team and in real financial strife into an afl powerhouse".
BC:"thanks mate, it was a massive task but I saw a fantastic inner culture that I knew could be unleashed, and the financial stuff usually follows pretty closely with success".
AD:"perhaps you should leave the cats and try and unleash north melbournes inner culture too"
BOTH: "BAAA HA HA HA"!!

It’s quite common practice in the business world to head hunt in this way. Over a few beverages the ‘have you ever thought of....’ line is dropped into the conversation to elicit a response. If there’s a flicker of interest it’s followed-up. If not, nothing is lost and should a poaching claim rear its head it’s passed off as nothing more than a frivolous exchange.

Remember Demetriou is a former North player. North is bleeding at present and that is costing the AFL buckets and there is little prospect of that changing on the foreseeable future. Added to which, in the context of that conversation, there was no need for a club to be mentioned.

For a member of the overriding body who is supposed to be non partisan to have made an approach which had the potential to penalise one of the constituent clubs was a disgrace. Even if there was no serious intent – which I don’t accept.

Anyhoo, Cookie has snuffed it out and why wouldn’t you? Apart from anything else why would you want to work for Brayshaw.;)

First they try to get Cookie to GC. Then Demetriou asks him if he is up to another challenge and suggests North.
His excuse is that it is OK over 3 bottles of wine
FFS leave us alone, all of you. I can not believe that this would happen
This is how they balance things up

So Demetriou approached Cookie not once but twice about going to North Melbourne.
The second meeting, a lunch on March 22, was on the day of the season launch at Sydney's Town Hall. Cook was among a group of powerful high-profile club people enjoying the views across the Bondi breakwater.
It was there, as more bottles of wine were drunk, it was revealed Cook had been asked about a role at North Melbourne.
It wasn't a "throwaway line". One member at that March lunch yesterday said the talk revolved around Cook going into the Kangaroos lock, stock and barrel.
Another person at the lunch described the potential position as "chief executive or chief executive/chairman".
On that day, it all seemed serious.
At least one senior Geelong figure was told in November of the approach from the AFL, so it has been more than a joke at Geelong for some time.
Indeed, as Demetriou defended the league on radio yesterday, the Cats were not pleased about the fact the AFL had asked their chief executive to take a similar role at another club, joke or not.

I hate the fat prick with a passion.

That outburst on the Footy Show was great! Skit or not, the fact he told em all to get stuffed by name and called that quince Brayshaw a **** was great.

Demetriou came out today on 3AW and said the story was crap. Once again Mark Robinson has failed to verify a story from the supposed source. Maybe it's Robbo who should be sacked. He is a blight on football journalism.

Oh well! If Demetriou said it then it must be 100% true.

Have a gander at my other post. The approach Demetriou took is a quite common practice in business. It allows for plausible denial if it doesn't elicit a positive response.

Like Robbo or not -and I'm not a fan - Demetriou confirmed it happened. So it's merely a matter of what price you put on Demetriou's word as to why it happened. You've swallowed his plausible denial. I haven't.

From Cooky's comments, I think he thought it was a 'feeler' too.
