Brian Lake thinks that Cyril is cream on the cake player, not the cake?

This is a guy that played in 3 premierships with Cyril and knows him intimately.

He has questioned whether Cyril can be a successful player when the team is not doing well.

He needs everything else in the team do be going well, for him to be playing well.

In light of this, has Cyrils legacy now taken a dent?

Is he just a flat track bully?

He is a small forward, bloody hard to play that position when your team is getting absolutely flogged week in week out.

He won them several games last year off his own boot, he is a star and the best in his position outside Betts.

The thing is some players can play for a successful side and they don't have to do much and if they chip in for a couple of goals and people say that helped them win. They could play the exact same game in a side who loses by ten goals every week and everyone will be saying they have to do more.
Cyril is probably going to be one of these players and who knows a fair few other Hawks will probably as well

All "mercurial" "x-factor" type players suffer from either inconsistency or inefficacy when the team around them is crap.

And Brian Lake is spot on for once.

Someone needed to say it. It was funny seeing Robbo's shock at the comment. I wish Derm was there.

Cyril's a great player, but he is not the demigod the AFL media want us to believe.

Flat track bully isn't really the right word, but he is someone that relies on ball supply to have an effect. It's not like he's an accumulator himself.

Most of those outside half forwards are in the same situation. Bloody hard to be a small forward in a shit side.

i blame Bruce. If he had've just shut the #### up from the start and treated him like a normal player none of this scrutiny would be happening now that Hawthorn have fallen down the rabbit hole.

He's a sensation player to watch and highly skilled. We all know that- included Lake.
But plenty of other league players just as good have form slumps.

    That's footy.

Is it true he's never had over 25 touches in a match?

I think Cyril more so than others, or at least based on what I have seen so far in 2017. 2017 is the first time he has been in what we would consider a bad team.

In fact, someone should find the stats Betts had at Carlton when Carlton were terrible as that would probably be a good comparison with Rioli.

I was thinking Jack Riewoldt (Richmond, 15th, 2010) would be a shoo-in, but I didn't take into account Brendan Fevola (Carlton, 16th, 2006). That will take some beating.

Good question. Probably Bill Young at St Kilda in 1956.

But I'm just completely making that up and really don't have a clue.

Betts plays in the forward pocket. Rioli plays on the wing.

I think we will learn a lot about Rioli in the next 2 years or so. It is easy to look amazing when you are part of an amazing team.
