The way the rucks are now a ruck has to be very mobile and do more than just contest the ruck, Longer is by far the best tap ruckman but just can't contribute around the ground where Hickey is a lot more mobile around the ground.
Also I feel Hickey is at the right age to show his best and he hasn't been to bad considering he has been given huge tasks against McEovy , Gawn , Sandy and now Grundy.
 
Reckon there could be an argument to play Lewis Pierce ahead of Longer.

Here is there VFL form to date which should be a fair comparison as they are both playing first ruck.

Longer is averaging the following 7 disposals 1.25 marks 53 hit outs .25 goals 2.75 tackles (hit out averaged a little skewed due to one game of 70 averages 47.33 over other three games)

Pierce is averaging the following 12.5 disposals 3.83 marks 41.66 hit outs 0.66 goals 2.5 tackles

If hickey is injured I think they would play pierce. The game has passed longer so quickly. I doubt anyone would want him now for more than a pick 30 or more likely above

I’m amazed at this call. Billy Longer gets 40-odd hitouts & 5 or less disposals at VFL level.

A team that includes Billy Longer is like playing with 17 men on the field until there’s a stoppage. I’d rather play Marshall full time ruck than Billy

Bill played first two matches (injured in the second). We had our only win in the first.

Tom has played six so far for one draw, 5 losses.

who cares about hit outs when you are epic liability around the ground, in modern football 5 disposals and 1 kicks isn't good enough anymore.

Richmond never win the hit outs and average less than us but have a mobile ruckman similar tom Hick

On average, most draft picks don't come off. If they did you' have to delist good players which obviously never happens.

I think Billy has been serviceable. When we traded McEvoy. We knew we had to land another ready made ruckman. Given longer was originally taken at pick 8 by the lions a few seasons earlier, I was wrapped we got him. In fact - Can't say too many on here were disappointed when we landed him... Harry Hindsight is always right in these threads!

The general consensus in the recruitment community when Billy was taken at pick 8 was shock. A terrible faux pad by the Lions. We got him for 25, which was closer to his real draft value. Even that was a bit rich but we needed another ruckmen, apparently. Another good pick wasted. Not in hindsight, but called by plenty at the time. Another beauty by the fresh water fish. Lucky if we get something for him at the end of the year. We tried at the end of 2016, but Billy didn't want to go. Pity. Now we'll get nothing.

Everyone's better in hindsight GG....
Enlighten me and the other posters on here. Who should we take with pick 3 and 57.
That way we can look back and test if you were any good rather than telling us how bad the pick/trade was after the fact.

Doesn't take Einstein to work out that Hickey > Longer.

The days of lumbering ruckman trotting around are gone, with the exception of maybe Sandilands.

Need to be able to mark, lay a takle and kick the footy. All things that Tom does better than Bill.
 
Longer’s been a joke his whole time as a Saint. I can honestly say I do not think I’ve seen a more out of place player in my time watching football - any level.

Just as funny has been the support of him as some type of developing star by some apparent ‘in the knows’, generally in a belittling, s******ing, “you don’t know football” smarmy manner; along with the apparent preference of Longer over Hickey by the seniors coaching/coaching staff.

No bad feelings, just genuinely a joke - as in I have laughed watching Longer play more than anyone else.

Billy has the aggression and physicality of a ruckmen, can protect our mids in clearances, but not the agility to pick up possessions and marks around the ground.

Hickey can pick up a couple of more possessions than Longer, but is really more suited to play volleyball (he used to) than football, lack of strength and no physicality whatsoever.

We need another Nankervis. Cheap and very good. Is there another one playing second fiddle somewger?

lukosios if he's available. Rankine or Walsh. We will have one of the top three picks, so we should get one of those. That's my call. Knowing Elshyte, he'll blow it again. Hopefully he'll be gone before the draft. He's done enough damage with his incompetence.

I watched him a few weeks ago , he took like 5 marks and kicked a goal in the first quarter alone , He could easily be our No 1 ruckman next year or even later this year

I'd look at Pruest at NM. Can't get a run with Goldy selected, but is a huge unit who can play.
