Opinion Bring back normal length quarters or leave them as they are?

Blinked and there was 5 minutes left.
It is a bit like that.
I am ok with their decision to continue the home and away part of season with shorter quarters due to starting round one that way and still possibly rounds later on need to be less than 5 day breaks a few times. But I see no reason if we get through all of winter with no more stops for season why we cannot plan to play whole finals series for proper time games again.

If the important finals are played in shortened time too, the grand final in particular is not going to feel the a fair dinkum grand final in history if you not needed to win it via the normal 120 minutes of football. Will feel more like an Escort Cup grand final win from 1980's on a cold Tuesday night at Waverley.

I don't put all the blame on Gil, I also blame the AFLPA, particularly it's president Patrick Dangerfield. That arrogant prick is always lobbying for shorter and fewer games, whilst getting paid more. The man is a germ.

Wouldn’t go as far as germ but yes I’d be blaming the AFLPA, I bet they only agreed to less pay if there were shorter games.

Hopefully the AFL will come out and say OK, that was round one, unless we have to compress the games even further, we are back to full length games as of round two but logic tends not to fly.

How many of us have played in appalling conditions on mud heaps in hail and snow and no one has said "hey let's reduce the time"? Time for these overpaid athletes to grow a pair each.

Should say if we get through this initial block of games ok, then from r6 onwards we are back to 20 minutes.

Though personally I’d want them all back to 20 mins by r3.

Germ isn't going far enough when describing Dangerfield imo. He's from the Judd school of doesn't really like AFL but will play it for the $$ and it doesn't matter to him if it dies when he's made enough cash

It definitely would of, the last 4 minutes of a quarter is when players are most tired and defensive structures break down and the most scoring happens.

I don’t disagree with that. There’s just a lot more to it than quarter length to me. It was clanger city out there and blokes seemed pretty clearly gassed having not played in months. Adding more fatigue would have been unlikely to add skill to the contest (unless you are a fan who equates spectacle solely with scoring), though there would have been more opportunity for scoring as you say.

While I don’t see 20 minute quarters retiring in 2020, I won’t be out crying foul if they do return either. I think we just need more of a sample size than we have been given so far before deciding how outraged to get too.

I think the AFL would say look what happened today with the NRL game being postponed from today to tomorrow because one of the player’s kids was at a school with a positive case. That is shorter quarters if a team needs to play an unscheduled short week

It makes the games feel like meaningless practice matches that arent worth caring about

The fake crowd noise has worked much better than expected imo, along with a few thousand people allowed back in, if they just put the quarters back to 20 minutes it might feel like a real season again

I would prefer we maintain the length of the game and reduce the bench to two subs per quarter

the speed of the game has resulted in the defensive roaming maul that many teams have adopted.

I'd also cut the coaching panel down to one, with a $120k pay ceiling.

Nobody likes the shorter quarters unless you work in the media and trying to push an agenda, or you are Dangerfield or you are being payed off to spread support for the idea. OP is probably the latter. Not found

To anyone who's part of the AFL or media illuminati please reach out to me, I am happy to be paid off to make posts on Bigfooty asking questions about the length of quarters.
