Damian Monkhorst has just been appointed the new ruck coach at Hawthorn. He is a premiership ruckman, our premiership ruckman and he's working for the opposition. After serving an apprenticeship under the tutelage of Crackers Keenan he has developed into one of the leading ruck coaches available. Let's bring him home, we need him.

To be quite honest, Monkhurst was never a great tap ruckman, he was more of a shover then a rucker, in that he used his body to move players out of the way, in a manner that many are paid free kicks against now.

Richmond kept him on part time, and I would doubt he would be a full time coach at Hawthorn either.

We have Darren Flanagan as our ruck coach, probably a better "pure" ruckman then Monkhurst, and Flanagan is probably under contract, and at least Cameron Wood seemed to improve this year.

Plus, you have to remember, we have something better then a ruck coach, we have an elite ruckman now in Jolly.

Monkhurst at the pies a few years ago would have been nice, if only for the sentimental reasons, but we have a ruck coach, and the Collingwood coaching staff and board are obviously quite happy with him.

Good luck to Monky though.:thumbsu:

Fact is as you have mentioned he has just been apointed ruck coach of Hawthorn and as such is under contract hence we can not get him to Collingwood. So the thread is pretty much null and void.

I wouldn't go as far as saying we have a great ruck coach though or that it isn't something that should be looked at. Fraser has been on the list for a long time and still struggles not only to win taps but to make a genuine contest at center bounces. Regularly jumps very early and gives opposition rucks a virtual free hit. As for Wood his tapwork has always been first rate. I don't think that has improved. If anything his confidence, and ability to stay switched on mentally has.

There is still a large percentage of body to body ruck work around the ground at stoppages and boundary throw ins. In his heyday Monky was quite skillfull and agile for his size, he knows how to play and isn't quite the neanderthal that you suggest. Although he aint what he used to be, he still knows the spots to run to and where to position yourself to get first hands on the ball. There's a lot to be said for knowing the tricks of the trade and so far flanagan hasn't shown a lot in that regard. Cam Wood is a good center bounce ruckman but sure could learn a lot from someone of monky's ilk around the ground. Monky still got his share of center bounce taps. Our boys could sure do with a bit of aggression in the ruck division.

How he played doesn’t necessarily reflect how he will coach.
A lot of batsmen in the Australian team use to say they learnt a lot off Mcgrath because he was really good at picking batsmen’s faults.

I have a big ol' soft spot for Monky - loved him as a young, Collingwood-supporting ruckman. But I haven't seen any great evidence that he's a top-line ruck coach. Nothing but the best in every job should be our goal.

Having said that, I think that having the big fella involved in the club in some capacity would be terrific.
