The AFL are considering introducing a 12 pointer by kicking a torpedo from outside 50m for the 2012 NAB cup.
Personally I reckon it should be in the season proper next year, nothing better than seeing players bomb a torpedo , and seeing it go through at goal post height.

Bring it on AFL.

Surely you jest? The 6 points for a goal and 1 point for a behind system has been the traditional scoring system since the game started over 150 years ago. Why should we introduce such a ludicrous suggestion into season proper? Just leave the ****ing game alone!

I dont think they should add a new rule, or higher score etc.. I love the Torp but it was fazed out of our game due to accuracy reasons, a drop punt goes straighter (for most players) and also much harder to read and mark so it was frowned upon by most clubs at all levels over the last 20 yrs starting at junior levels players would get dragged so fewer players will kick them.. ALL players have a crack at them in free time.

I think the attitude from a coaching level needs to change not another bloody rule change, encourage the kids/blokes that have the gift instead of dragging them for 'team rules' reasons.. because thats what killed it.

just my 2c..

They are not considering it they are bringing it in for the NAB cup 2012. So make sure you watch and get your jollies off when someone kicks a BIG TWELVE POINTER.

I dont give a crap what they do in the NAB cup because no supporters or clubs really care about it(Actually clubs and fans stopped caring about it when the AFL starting introducing stupid rules in it, was actually a fairly good night comp in the 90's when the rules were roughly the same as the season proper). They can have the players running around in tutu's for all I care but as soon as they start stuffing around with gimmicks in the season proper that's when alot of fans will drop off and be lost to the game.

Exactly that. I quite liked the preseason comp before that supergoal shit got brought in.

Even if it was a good idea to have that particular rule included it would be incredibly unfair to just add it in for next season without any warning.

Teams have drafted players and worked on playing plans and styles for years that suit the way the game is played now. Having a player/s that could kick torpedo goals from outside 50 on a consistent basis with that rule in place would be a massive advantage. If clubs knew a few years in advance this rule would be introduced that would give them time to draft/trade/train players accordingly.

Whether or not this rule is actually a good idea? I don't think so. There's nothing wrong with the scoring system as it stands. We still get a nice highlight reel of spectacular looking goals from week to week. There's still plenty of close, tight scoring games.

I also don't see the merits of rewarding players double points for kicking a long distance goal when the closer, tighter angle goals from deep in the pocket are arguably far more difficult to kick.

How about this for a rule to beat the presses...if all the players are in one half of the oval and if someone can kick the ball over the top into the area between the 50m arc and center square they can take a free kick from where it hits the ground :)

...leave the game alone me thinks.

Source? It was on the fans survey for potential NAB Cup rules, but I've seen no announcement since.

Agree 100% on the pre-season comp, it was great when the rules were roughly the same. On the flipside though, I'd rather see rules get trialled in the pre-season so we don't get a dud inflicted upon us (the new advantage rule) in the season proper. But unfortunately the AFL don't use it only for trials, they persist with rules like "super goals" that have been in for years despite no hope of ever making it into the season proper.

Serious question - how do you define a torp? When is a torp not a torp? Where is the cut-off between an attempted torp that comes off perfectly and an attempted torp that doesn't quite come off?

Seems to me that it can't be clearly defined, therefore a potential can of worms. Don't want it.

If it means bringing back the most skilled kick in the AFL, I'm all for it.

Most skillful or not is debatable. Leaving that aside, it would also bring back many, many ugly shanks. The torp isn't even dead, maybe you should watch players like Dale Thomas or Dustin Fletcher if you want to see torps.

Legislating to encourage the torp would also make it less appealing, if players attempting torps became the norm, people wouldn't care about them anywhere near as much, they'd just be like drop punts are now. The most important aspect of the game (the scoring system) would have been compromised for nothing. The current beauty of the torp is it's rarity, it might only happen once a game, but when it comes off it's great to watch because it's something you don't see every day.

This is what I have been thinking too. A kick is a kick is a kick.

What a well-thought out post, if only the "genius" who came up with the idea had have considered this before he opened his mouth. :p
