Brisbane re-sign Gwilt

New Brisbane coach Pie 4 Life ensured in the last few days of signing that James Gwilt was secured on a one year $147,000 contract. "We believe he is a player who deserves another chance. He has shown he has a lot of potential and should cement his spot in the St. Kilda 22, which means he will be a valuable player for the Bears.

Brisbane get Fisher, Hawksley

Brisbane have secured the services of Leigh Fisher and James Hawksley for the coming season after signing the through the upcoming PSD. Both have been signed for two years on $130,000 contracts. "We believe that Leigh will be a good depth player who will get some games this season, while James will make a breakthrough year this year with Brisbane, so we are very happy to get them so cheap."

Brisbane welcome Thomas, Hayden

Brisbane Bears have welcomed the inclusion of defender Roger Hayden and small forward Lindsay Thomas to the club following a trade made with the Western Vultures. Along with Pick 41, they were exchanged in the trade period for Clint Bartram, Nick Gill and Pick 61. "We are quite pleased with how this has panned out. We told Nick that he is not in our future plans, so he asked for a trade and we gave that to him. We needed a bit of experience, so Hayden was a good option, while Lindsay Thomas will be handy up forward for the us. We wish both Clint and Nick all the best in the future."

Brisbane get Power

Brisbane Bears have secured the services on Luke Power after winning the bidding war on him, along with Pick 78. Brisbane were able to place their third round pick, Pick 45 up for offer which was accepted after the other bid was placed too late. Power joined the group today. The inclusion of Pick 78 means the Bears have five compulsory National Draft Picks and one compulsory PSD pick. "We are settled for the year and look forward to welcoming the six new players to our club in the coming weeks. Luke will add something special to the team, and we happy to get him for so cheap."

Five players training with Brisbane

Colm Begley, Tom Lonergan, Paul Johnson, Chris Bryan and Henry Slattery are all training with the Bears in the hope that they will be selected in the upcoming Drafts. It is believed that Brisbane may use their last selection (#78) on a mature age player, as well as their sole PSD selection. All five are doing their best to impress Pie 4 Life in a bid to get another chance at AFLTM level.

Pie 4 Life to go tall in draft

Brisbane Coach Pie 4 Life has declared he is aiming to go tall in the draft where possible after deciding that KPP are rare at the club. While he has interest in midfield gems, he will more than likely be taking a few talls with his picks. "Yeah there's a few smalls I'm interested in, but more than likely we'll go for a tall forward/tall back for our first two picks" Pie 4 Life said today.

Despite tall needs, Bears select Sidebottom

Contrary to popular belief, the Brisbane Bears selected midfielder Steele Sidebottom with their first pick (#10 Overall) despite an obvious need for a tall. "Well we had agreed that should Steele have gone, then we would have gone tall, but we know this kid can play off a half forward flank too and kick bags of goals. We rate him very highly and since he was there at our pick, we couldn't resist."

Roughead the go at #29

After taking Steele Sidebottom at #10, the Bears agreed they must go tall with #29, and hoping Jackson Trengove would drop till #29, they watch in joy as he kept avoiding been selected. Then came Collingwood at #28. All their hopes were dashed as they took the defender with their pick, just one pick ahead of the Bears. The Bears were no less disappointed in selecting attacking ruckman Jordan Roughead with their pick. Their next pick, #41 is also believed to be a KPP before using consequetive picks in the 70's to pick up the best available players.

Liam Jurrah surprises at #41

Demon Liam Jurrah has found his home in the AFLTM after being taken by the Bears at Pick #41. He is a goalkicking machine whom will excite and/or frustrate the fans depending on the day. But should he stay consistent, he will be a gem in the rough.

Smith welcomed to Brisbane, while Lonergan finds new home

St. Kilda midfielder Alistair Smith has arrived in Brisbane following his drafting by the Bears at #76. He was thrilled to be up in tropical Queensland. "Yeah its good to be here, looking forward to the upcoming year" he said on arrival at the airport. While at Pick #77, Geelong forward Tom Lonergan found himself a new home, and is hoping to be the tall forward Brisbane needs "Yeah I've been training with the boys for a bit, I'm glad I'm officially here now" :)

Bryan fills last spot

Collingwood ruckman Chris Bryan is thanking his lucky stars after Brisbane read out his name in the pre-season draft. It is believed they were targeting one of Johnson or Bryan and due to Johnson going the pick beforehand, the Bears elected to go for Bryan. Due to the inexperienced ruck depth, Bryan will be of great help to young stars Ben McEvoy and Stefan Martin.

Keato3 joins the club

Keato3 has signed on at the Bears as an assistant for the 2009 season. Pie 4 Life was happy with the signing "Happy to have another brain on board the train. We are hoping to make the eight this year with a bit of luck, we have a young side coming through and look to be a good side for years to come"

Bears looking to cut players and trade others off

Chris Bryan is the first of many players who are going to get the chop from the Bears after Pie 4 Life listed the year as a "disgrace" and that an old-fashioned clean up was required in the last year of uncompromised drafting. Other players to come under the axe are Guy O'Keefe, Max Bailey, Eljay Connors and James Gwilt. While several players are looking for new homes such as Brad Miller and Tom Lonergan. Pie 4 Life said he was hoping to upgrade picks 4, 21, 27, 44, 61, 78, 95 and 111. He wants three of four top twenty picks to upgrade the youth.

Brisbane welcome Salter, Spangher; farewell Taylor and Stokes

Brisbane Bears have completed their first trade of the off-season welcoming young tall forward Nick Salter and developing tall back Matthew Spangher from West Coast. Not only are they younger, they are also cheaper and save a bit of space on the salary cap which coach Pie 4 Life was happy about "We are very pleased to welcome the two boys and while it was sad to lose Harry and Matthew, we believe we are on the right track for the future.

Brisbane and Sydney exchange young guns

Brisbane have welcomed young gun Jack Grimes, along with ruckman Will Minson who wanted to become a first string ruckman at a new club. Both recruits were happy to have landed in Brisbane. "Its great to start afresh and I can't wait to get into it" Minson told reporters at Brisbane airport. Patrick Dangefield, a promising young midfielder had to make way for Grimes along with Pick #44.

Brisbane ease salary cap space as they find massive trade with Gold Coast

Brisbane have welcomed a trio of players in David Mundy, Brad Dalziell and Josh Gibson who join the Bears ranks to help strengthen their defence and midfield. They are joined by Picks 14 and 37 to add to their list of young talent. Sadly the Bears had to bid farewell to promising defender Andy Otten, captain Sam Mitchell, developing ruckman Ben McEvoy and running defender Dean Polo. Pick 21 also was moved on to Gold Coast.

Joel Bowden retired, what use is he to anyone?

I thought Richmond had just kicked him out and he hadn't 100% officially retired as such. As in, if another club asked him to play, he would.
