Hi Essendon supporters. Today on radio when discussing Bombers versus Lions they had an interesting discussion on NRL expansion of clubs by 2023 and a name that was discussed was the Brisbane Bombers entering the NRL.

They could possibly create legal battles, trademark infrigements etc etc. My opinion is if it’s has the possibility of going through all that trouble then simply chose another name, but Brisbane Bombers don’t wish to do that, as they are semi established and they are going with a bidding war with other teams trying to enter so might not even happen. I have asked few of my Essendon supporter friends and they don’t really have a view on the matter as they don’t watch Rugby, whilst one mentioned that EFC & AFL should protect the Bomber name. Just wondering what is the bigger supporter point of view on what could be a new NRL team entering the comp and what could mean a nasty court room battle.

Doesn't really matter

Canterbury Bulldogs and Western Bulldogs
Wests Tigers and Richmond Tigers
Manly Sea Eagles and West Coast Eagles

I personally can't see a new club in Brisbane...... i'd prefer the Ipswich Jets get the NRL licence and play at Suncorp

EFC feel strongly about the issue. Clearly think Bombers name is a piece of real estate.

How exactly do you protect a name like that? You can't copyright / own a nickname. As pointed out earlier in the thread there's many examples of shared monikers.

I think it would be far smarter to reach out and instead of fight about a name instead create a strategic partnership and co-branding exercise across codes; whereby you cross-promote each other and allow access to training facilities when the other team is in town. Discounted memberships to members of their other code's Bombers club. That kind of thing. Proactively reclaim the brand that way.

Rather than a destructive and ultimately unwinnable fight, it makes much more sense to me to take advantage of the situation. I see no negatives doing it that way frankly

Then why is the EFC legal team and directors trying to protect the name?

Would you support Brisbane Bombers ahead of Melbourne Storm. Would Brisbane locals support Essendon ahead of the Lions?

Because they don't see it the same way I'm guessing? They may have information or reasoning which shows their logic to be good. From the outside looking in I think what Lance says makes sense though.

Thinking out loud: NRL may see naming as a potential risk which stops them from letting the Brisbane Bombers in over another team. It could just be a bluff by EFC for now.

As a supporter, I don't particularly care, like Lance I think it's an opportunity.

Then why is the EFC legal team and directors trying to protect the name?
I don't think we have any current board members or directors on the forum that can answer that.

To be clear, I am not essendon. So I have no idea. If they are trying to then they are dumb imo.

Personally I hate rugby league so I wouldn't support storm or Brisbane Bombers.

But I'd imagine some would never support another team. Others would.

Essendon's have a large QLD supporter base and many of them might identify with them.

Ultimately who cares though? For me it's about being smart with the situation. I see zero purpose in trying to "own" the Bombers as we are Essendon and we are 150 odd years old and are not even remotely threatened by a team in another code using our moniker.

We bought a bloody e-sports team to grow the brand. Have discussed or are discussing a basketball team. This is a no-brainer to me but hey, what do I know

They mentioned it on radio today. The new NRL broadcasting deal expires end of 2022 so by 2023 new licensing to be handing out for new NRL clubs mostly in QLD and 1 in WA of course if successful.

I'm thinking that the radio presenters didn't do very good research. Wouldn't be the first time their info was out of date...

The most recent article I could find was from Beyond the Game in September 2017, it says "The Brisbane Bombers were off to a rocky start in 2011 with the Essendon Bombers threatening legal action over the mascot. To date there has been no update on that action."
http://beyondthegame.tv/exactly-brisbane-bombers/

If something has happened since then, whatever you heard on the radio was the only coverage of it.

The Essendon of 2011 might've been into the idea of suing over intellectual property. If we've learnt anything in the intervening years, then I'm not so sure that the Essendon of 2018 would.

Yep was about to post the same. The only info I can find is from 2011 so I think it's a bit rich to earnestly claim "essendon feel strongly about it". Maybe 3 administrations ago they did but I can find no evidence to suggest there's been any recent angst about it.

Which radio station, out of interest OP? Would be interesting to podcast it

Your probably right, lot of changes can happen in a 7 year period, especially personnel.

Queensland is a very interesting place for Clubs as we have experienced over the last 7 years or so with Lions and Suns. Both struggling teams in AFL with trouble keeping young players. A second team to rival the already mighty Brisbane Broncos could be a challenge in itself but doubt will have trouble retaining players especially if most are local boys.

Will wait and see but of course wanting the right outcome for all parties.

Lol good question, I’m melbourne based but in Brisbane right now, was a local station. But what’s is really funny is nothing is a guarantee as AFL clubs are bigger than NRL clubs in terms of membership and crowd attendance especially in NSW. Probably why they see growth still in QLD. But Gold Coast Titans has lowest NRL membership so raises lots of questions there having 3 clubs within really Kilometres of each other, one already a Giant while one struggling and third could be an unknown. Perhaps for them picking an established minor team like Ipswich Jets might be the safer option.

Sorry I bet you not into Rugby and all the info is too much.

Eh I don't mind the name as it at least carries some history of the region. Eagle Farm in Brisbane and then later Archerfield and Amberley in Ipswich were major airforce bases during WW2. They were a central hub for the RAAF and USAAF Fifth Air Force command in the region, with most incoming aircraft coming through the base before being redistributed to other airfields across the country. A and A is to this day a major RAAF base.

I'm not concerned at all. Plenty of sporting teams rehash the same names from one sport to another.
I'd feel differently if it was a VFL team but Rugby I couldn't care less about.

Pretty sure the AFL trod all over a soccer club with the Brisbane Lions, who have the full title of "Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club" because of the clash. And you've got an A-League team called "roar" now, seems a reference.

Remember this from a few years back.

Couldn’t give a shit. I don’t know why there’s ever a fuss about nicknames. I wouldn’t even care if there was another one in the AFL. It’s just a nickname. Wouldn’t have been a drama had Port Adelaide stayed as the Magpies I don’t think... as long as they have the right clash jumper then who gives a shit.

Maybe there’s something small we could do, give their members a free ticket to our game when we play in Qld or something. Might as well try to make something of it.
