Brisbane Draft Discussion (#2)

I really like the high lights of Matt Fowler and hope we pick him up. Would also be happy with Sean Tighe and Mitch Golby if MATT Burgan's predictions are right

Oh yeah, they're still nice, don't get me wrong. But yeah, the new rules have taken a lot of the inequities out of it. For example, Marc Murphy (if he wasn't terrified of leaving Melbourne) would have cost us pick 41 in 2005 (Rhan Hooper pick... ouch)... under the new rules, he would have cost us pick 9 (Mitch Clark).

But yeah, havent heard anything about father/sons in the next couple of years.

Darryl White's boys are probably 8 or 9 years away I think, but very early signs are promising apparently.

Not that far TBD - Darryl starts at high school in 2010 and William is one class behind him.

Brisbane Lions look east for Sean Yoshiura

THE Brisbane Lions are poised to create history by signing the first Japanese-born player to an AFL list.

Sean Yoshiura will become a Lions rookie unless he is snatched by one of the clubs holding the seven selections in the pre-season draft, in which case he will go straight on to a senior list.

Yoshiura is an elite endurance runner who is ranked 33 in the world in cross-country and has represented Australia at a world titles in the 5km race.

He chose football last season and caught the eye of the Lions when he was used for their reserves side in the QAFL, on loan from Mt Gravatt.

What is the best radio station to listen to the draft's online? What times are they on? Thanks in advance.

The rookie/preseason drafts are all done by internet conferencing. So there is nothing to really broadcast, as noone is naming players etc. As a result, SEN etc dont normally bother.

If it is anything like last year, Matt Burgan will be doing live text updates on AFL.com.au.

It all starts 11am Eastern daylight savings time, 10 am in Brisbane.

I hope not. Last year we recruited quite a few with the same name "PASS".

I'm marginally disappointed with our overall lack of x-factor across all the drafts.

Apart from that, there seems to be a couple of themes across our draft picks this year:

1) Skill

2) Untapped potential / value for money

Bartlett has a lot of X factor. O'Brien too if he develops.

McCauley could become an excellent ruckman with his athletic prowess, so I guess that qualifies as X Factor.

I know what you mean though. Apart from Bartlett we really haven't got anyone who's super quick and has freakish skills.

3) Under 184cm unless you're a ruckman. ;)

Looks like we've gone away from the tall running flankers where we picked up the likes of Schmidt, Hawksley and Austin in 2006/07.

So we enter 2010 with 16 brand new players on our list, that's a massive turn around.

Voss is beginning to get the playing the list that he wants. Will need the next few years to find out how it all goes.

I rekon McCauley has been recruited as our future Full Forward with Leauenberger and Clark to carry ruck duties. Any one agree?

Too early to say anything for sure lionshine. I reckon the club at the moment sees him as a ruck who is versatile enough to pinch hit in other positions. As for how he'll go long term...who knows.

Actually if Leuenberger and other young rucks develop as hoped, it may be Clark who goes into another position.

when our first pick was 27 you cant expect too much. think we did well getting bartlett and if the rest turn out to be solid players its a win.

Kind of glad we passed on Lovett during trade week.;)

Geez with the Carlton shenanigans, and now this, I think the club should call players in for a quick meeting to re-outline what is expected of them.

Don't want our club involved in this sort of shit.

I was thinking the exact same thing today!

....... so is Eddie Betts as a small forward option worth the risk :p
